CHAPTER 603: CHAPTER 569: NONE OF OUR BUSINESS
Could it be that in these short two months, Fourth Master has developed something new? He suddenly found himself having a deeper interest in this Fourth Master, for in terms of elixirs, she was indeed a genius.
"This thing, let me check the instructions." The girl seemed unsure about the purpose of the item. She had lowered her guard around Xiao Lin and took the item out to examine it. The black liquid was indeed a liquid, but it was much thicker compared to the silver-white liquid inside. It didn’t flow as easily and resembled more of a paste, with its purpose unknown.
"This seems to enhance the human body’s functions several dozen times, kind of like in the movies where you get turned into a big, strong guy." The girl chuckled at her explanation. It really did look like what the description was saying, something about enhancing human potential by 300 percent—what nonsense.
"That sounds fun. I’ll take this one then." Xiao Lin took the small bottle from the girl’s hand, holding it up against the sunlight. The silver-white liquid inside had tiny bubbles rolling around with his movements, while the black paste encasing it also had numerous bubbles grouped together, though not much was happening, almost as if it was protecting the silver-white substance inside. If he wasn’t mistaken, the truly effective part should be those silver-white things.
"Ah, you want this? Do you want to become some big guy? That wouldn’t look good."
"No, I’m not using this stuff; I just really like the bottle and the color." Xiao Lin explained quickly to the girl, putting on a show of being a rich playboy amazed by everything novel.
"Rich people’s interests sure are peculiar, spending a fortune on something pointless just for this unappealing thing. Your taste is truly unique." The girl said, half sarcastically and half admiringly.
Xiao Lin just smiled. This sort of psychological imbalance was common among ordinary folks. "Swipe the card!"
"Alright!"
The transaction was completed swiftly, and the girl had also met her target for the day. Xiao Lin stepped outside the store and lit a cigarette as he waited for the girl to pack up and finish work. Despite just being a small hardware store, it did actually sell hardware. Just watching them count out items every day made his head ache, yet the girl was remarkably quick at checking and recording each item in the ledger.
The cigarette in his fingers was halfway done when he heard the sound of the roller shutter being lowered behind him. "You’re pretty fast. Have you got everything done? Are you sure you weren’t slacking off?"
"Absolutely." The girl slung a small backpack over her shoulder, and with one hand already hooked onto Xiao Lin’s arm, her lips had a fresh layer of lip gloss, pink and glossy, though appearing quite cheap. "Handsome, where are you planning to take me on a date?"
"We’ll eat first, then how about we go to the best hotel here?"
"Hotel?" As soon as she heard the word, the girl withdrew her arm.
"What’s wrong?" Seeing her awkwardness, Xiao Lin laughed heartily. "Scared? Weren’t you the one who joked about testing whether I’m unstoppable?"
"I did say that, but it was just a joke." The girl re-hooked her arm around Xiao Lin’s, her heart like two little deer colliding inside. Should she go with him? This was a rare sugar daddy; if she managed to catch him, she might secure a wealthy marriage.
"Oh, it was a joke, was it? I took it seriously." Xiao Lin intensely stared at the girl. "Tell you what, I’m not in the habit of forcing people. Since it’s a date, we’ll eat first. If you want, we can head to the hotel. If you’re not ready, I’ll take you back. How about that?"
"Okay!" The girl thought Xiao Lin was not only wealthy but also a gentleman. She sneaked a glance at Xiao Lin’s profile, already making a decision in her heart.
Wu Shuang walked beside Mu Rongyun. The matters at the police station no longer required their presence, and Director Zhao’s equipment wasn’t enough for Mu Rongyun to compare photo images on the computer. For now, they had to return to the City Police Department and let other colleagues transport the body back. After all those years at the department, Mu Rongyun had trained quite a few apprentices, and they could handle such a simple procedure.
"What’s the matter?" Seeing Wu Shuang come to a sudden stop, Mu Rongyun walked back to see what she was looking at. He also saw the person who made Wu Shuang stop in her tracks.
"Don’t go over there!" Wu Shuang grabbed Mu Rongyun, her eyes fixed on the backs of Xiao Lin and a girl who looked as if she wasn’t from a decent background, laughing and chatting as she hooked onto Xiao Lin’s arm.
"What’s up?" Mu Rongyun asked again, expressing a different kind of curiosity with the same words.
"Nothing, it’s none of our business." Wu Shuang turned towards the central garden, not looking back. So this is what you came here to do, huh? Couldn’t he find a prostitute downtown? That girl didn’t even look of age.
Mu Rongyun gazed at Wu Shuang’s retreating figure, then back at Xiao Lin and the girl’s backs, frowning. This doesn’t seem quite as simple as it appears on the surface.
"Aren’t you leaving?" Wu Shuang called out sharply to Mu Rongyun, who felt like he had become her punching bag.
Entering what appeared to be a modestly upscale restaurant, Xiao Lin chose a window seat to sit down. His eyes didn’t miss those across the way; Wu Shuang’s irritation and Mu Rongyun’s suspicion were all observed by him.
"Wow, this is my first time entering such a store; I never imagined we had such a luxurious place in the North District." The girl started surveying the store’s decor as soon as she sat down. People like her could never afford to eat at such a place in their lifetime. Who says the North District doesn’t have high-end places? It’s just that very few people come here. This type of store is opened for the wealthy from the city center to bring women here to spend money. A single business transaction can sustain a couple of months of living expenses.
"Close your mouth quickly; your drool is about to fall out," Xiao Lin jokingly said, handing the menu to the girl. "Order whatever you like, don’t be afraid that I can’t afford it."
"You said it, so don’t say later that I ate you into poverty." The girl opened the menu, and her jaw dropped again. "Oh my, the dishes here are terribly expensive."
"How embarrassing!" Xiao Lin was indifferent to the girl’s exaggeration. He ordered a pot of green tea and an ashtray from the waiter.
The girl playfully stuck out her tongue at Xiao Lin, feeling a bit embarrassed by her own exaggeration. "Really, can I order anything?" she asked again, causing Xiao Lin to feel a bit impatient.
"One of each of the house specials, and also get this girl a fresh vegetable salad and a dessert."
The waiter quickly placed the order on the order machine. "Serve dessert last. Do you drink alcohol?"
"What, are you trying to get me drunk? I have a very high tolerance, you know."
"Let’s get a pitcher of orange juice, alcohol is not suitable for minors. Get me an Italian cheese fried rice with double cheese, make it rich."
"Alright!" The waiter politely took the menu. "Would you like to try our seafood that just arrived by air?"
"No, I don’t eat seafood, I’m allergic to it." The girl waved off the waiter. She has an allergic constitution, eating seafood is more painful than death for her.
"If it’s not enough, you can order more. But looking at their dishes, they should suit your taste."
"How do you know?" the girl asked, though her heart felt sweet like honey.
Seeing the girl’s sweetness, Xiao Lin smiled. He wasn’t fond of doing such things, but it involved the entire Huaxia, so he had no choice but to use such means. "I just know."
"Oh, has anyone ever told you that you’re very arrogant?" Perhaps no one else was eating here, so the service speed was quick. The girl poured herself a glass of juice. "Do you want some?"
Xiao Lin shook his head. "I prefer tea."
"Tsk, so young yet like an old man." The girl picked up a big shrimp with her chopsticks, its juicy flesh burst open by her mouth, leaving her lips covered in juice.
"Take your time, no one’s going to snatch it from you." Xiao Lin handed her a napkin, though he didn’t particularly like such girls, he didn’t dislike this personality either. In some aspects, she was a bit like Xia Xue. Thinking of this made him smile, it seemed he hadn’t seen her for a while.
"What are you snickering about? Are you thinking of your girlfriend?" The girl seemed to really enjoy the shrimp, ignoring the other dishes.
"How do you know?"
"Of course I know, someone like you wouldn’t be without a girlfriend, right? Also, men smile when they’re thinking about women, oh, I mean when they’re thinking about the women they like in their hearts, not like those men out there who pay for women," she said, a plate of shrimp was already halfway gone as she turned to another plate of bullfrog.
The girl could eat a lot, Xiao Lin noticed, but she only ate half of each dish, which puzzled him. He thought about asking, but decided to wait and see what the girl would do.
"I may be small, but I’ve seen many people, so don’t underestimate me," the girl said proudly. Xiao Lin believed her; given the line of work she was in, she surely had encountered all kinds of people and was likely more mature than others her age.
The phone vibrated a few times, and the girl giggled at Xiao Lin. "Is it your girlfriend calling to check up on you?"
Without answering the girl’s question, Hua Qingyi quickly looked at the email information about the identity of the man with the bad haircut. It turned out he was a small boss of a construction project—this was just surface information. He replied with a request for further investigation before facing the girl again.
"Does the man who hit you come back every day?" Xiao Lin lit a cigarette. "It’s wrong to hit a woman, you know. Want me to teach him a lesson?" (To be continued.
