CHAPTER 128: FINAL STAGE

The Headmaster’s command simply confirmed Ariana’s own decision. To show fear was to hand the Bureau a victory. The tournament would not just continue, it would become an act of defiance.

The arena was completely different. It felt like a fortress, not a place for celebration. The colorful banners were replaced by the Headmaster’s guards, in shining black and gold armor, standing on every high point. The crowd that returned was smaller and quieter, their faces showing fear, dark curiosity, and strong national pride. They were here not just to see a fight, but to witness the Academy’s answer to an attack on its own soil.

Jonah stood at the entrance to the arena floor, taking a deep breath. The psychic drain from his last battle with Draven had mostly faded, but a new kind of exhaustion had set in. He was a player in a game so large he could barely see the edges of the board.

He saw Ariana on the other side, doing her own quiet pre-match preparations. She wasn’t stretching or warming up. She was just standing, her eyes closed, radiating an aura of unshakable calm.

The announcer’s voice boomed, but it had lost its usual celebratory tone. It was serious, respectful, and slightly defiant.

"In a tournament marked by unforeseen challenges, two finalists have emerged, representing the pinnacle of their respective arts! In the south corner, the master of tactics, the Weaver of Beasts, JONAH!"

"And in the north corner, full of grace and power, the envoy of the Silver Phoenix Empire, who wields pure light: ARIANA!"

The arena applauded, feeling tense yet respectful.

Jonah and Ariana walked to the center of the stage, the smoking hole from the previous day’s attack a stark reminder of the stakes. They stood a few feet apart, the two most powerful students of their generation, from two different worlds.

"Still want to see what my power is capable of?" Jonah asked, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

A faint smile touched her lips. "More than ever," she replied, her own voice a soft whisper. "But today, we are not just rivals, Jonah. We are a message to those who hide in the shadows. We will show them that we are not afraid."

She took a step back. "Let’s give them a good show."

The gong sounded, clear and sharp in the heavy silence.

GOOOONG!

The final duel began.

Ariana moved first. She didn’t charge. She simply raised a hand, and the air around her buzzed with power. A dozen spears of pure, white-hot light appeared in a circle behind her, their tips aimed squarely at Jonah.

FWOOSH!

They shot forward, not in a messy group, but as a planned swarm. Some targeted him directly, others went for his flanks, cutting off escape routes.

Jonah’s mind was a storm of calculations. He couldn’t dodge them all. He needed a distraction.

He summoned Specter. The invisible creature moved like a ghost, creating three fake duplicates of Jonah in an instant. The duplicates scattered, running in different directions.

Ariana’s attack didn’t falter. With a subtle flick of her wrist, half the light spears changed course, each one flawlessly tracking a different target. The other half continued directly towards the real Jonah.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The fake duplicates were struck, exploding into harmless motes of shadow.

Jonah, meanwhile, had Specter create a thick, swirling shield of solidified darkness. The remaining spears slammed into it.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The sound was like light striking metal. The shield held, but cracks spiderwebbed across its surface. The sheer power of her attack was incredible.

This was not a fight he could win with simple tricks.

"Impressive," Ariana said, her voice calm as she prepared her next attack. "But an illusion is still just an illusion."

"An illusion is a tool," Jonah countered, summoning Nyx. The Glimmer-Wing Striker was a blur. It flew high and released a cloud of shiny, confusing dust, trying to mess with Ariana’s senses.

It was a good plan. It would have worked on anyone else.

Ariana simply held up her hand again. A small sphere of light formed in her palm, and then it expanded outwards in a blinding flash.

FOOM!

The light instantly burned away Nyx’s dust, leaving the air crystal clear.

She was a perfect counter to his stealth and illusion. Her pure light simply erased the shadows he tried to create.

He had to change tactics.

"Specter, direct pressure!" he commanded.

The invisible creature shot forward, its limbs grew into razor-sharp talons as it lunged for Ariana’s back.

She didn’t even turn. A seamless dome of light appeared around her, just in time to block Specter’s strike.

TING!

The sound was like a bell chime. The shield didn’t even crack. Her defenses were as flawless as her attacks.

The crowd was breathless. This was a duel on a level they had never witnessed. Every move Jonah made, Ariana had a perfect counter. Every attack she launched, Jonah had a clever, unexpected defense.

He used Echo’s sonar to map her blind spots, sending Nyx in to attack her from unexpected angles. She would respond with precise, targeted blasts of light that forced the Striker to retreat. He had Specter create a maze of shifting shadow walls to trap her. She simply made them vanish with a wave of purifying light.

For minutes, they fought. Neither could land a single, decisive blow. Her power was a perfect wall against his versatile tactics. His strategy was a puzzle that she couldn’t brute force.

They were a perfect stalemate.

They broke apart, standing on opposite sides of the arena, both breathing heavily. The cheering crowd became silent, amazed by what they saw.

Ariana looked at him. Her eyes showed deep respect. "You are an impossible puzzle, Jonah."

"And you’re a perfect wall of light," he replied, a tired smile on his face.

They stood, facing each other, a perfect balance of power and strategy. The entire stadium held its breath. The board was perfectly balanced, waiting for the next, final move.

And then the world exploded.
