Chapter 165: Is he really the culprit?

Unlike his stern and overbearing Vice-captain, Gerald was far more fond of their Captain who was more easy going with the other member’s of their city’s enforcer knights.

Su Ping didn’t say anything but remained silent as if pondering something. The orachalcum cell was proving hard for him to preach. So escaping would prove to be difficult.

" You keep on talking about me waiting till I’m proven innocent but I don’t understand how I’m supposed to be a suspect in the first place." Su Ping scoffed, obviously not interested in the man as he dribbled on and on.

" I got admitted into this city barely 2 days ago and yet you claim that I’m a possible suspect to that sighting of over hundreds of corpses."

" You believe i killed all those people? Isn’t that a bit too much."

" Even if I was the one behind the incident, how am I supposed to gather all those missing corpses in that little amount of time." Su Ping furrowed his brows, feigning an irritated expression.

’ Of course it wouldn’t be hard for me to kill and gather that many bodies in that amount of time but, that doesn’t mean he needs to know that.’ Su Ping said to himself.

" The corpse gathering part might not be possible but the evidence we have says otherwise." said Gerald.

" What do you mean evidence..." Su Ping squinted his eyes, confused.

" We’re talking about the contracts you’ve been using to go around, trying to buy people’s business." Gerald’s expression suddenly turned solemn. " We’ve already checked and the date of the contract says you’ve been doing this for week’s."

’ Huh? But I only made that contract just two days ok at the city hall–’

’ Oh... I see, So that’s it. Someone colluded with the city hall to frame me. The city hall has nothing against which means, the person behind this must’ve payed someone inside to mess with some kind of paperwork just so they could use me as their scapegoat...’ Su Ping sneered coldly after realizing what happened. ’ But this isn’t completely bad, I can use this to my advantage.’

" Weeks?! Are you joking with me? It’s obvious that’s a lie." He feigned and irritated face, glaring at the enforcer knight.

" Sir, please calm down. We also understand how fishy that information is but we’ve also gone through the southern region, tracing the corpses we found back to their families and most of them said you came over to their shops offering that contract deal of yours shortly before their family members went missing."

’ Oh? So not only have they stuck this whole incident on me, they even went ahead and got the victims family’s to push the blame onto me. I must say, This is getting interesting.’

’ Whoever’s behind this must really not want to be caught.’

" It’s obvious those witnesses were bought off." Su Ping chuckled coldly. " Can’t you see that someone’s obviously trying to push the blame of this incident onto me, If you’d properly read the contract I created, you would see that there’s no reason for me to kill those victims, Why would I kill them when it’s clearly stated there that they can pick someone to work in their establishment after their demise, it doesn’t make any sense!"

" On the contrary, I believe it does." Gerald suddenly said. " Some might say you killed them off so that they wouldn’t be able to pick someone in their place, there by making the business’s yours."

" And why would i even do that, what’s the point of killing able bodied workers when all I could do is sit back and wait for them to earn me money."

" Who knows, you might’ve just used the ten percent revenue share within the contract to lure people in then when they sell of their properties to you, you kill them and reinstate new workers with a different revenue share."

"..."

Su Ping suddenly froze, not knowing what to say when he realized that the officer was actually right.

" Those are just unfounded suggestions, We both know I’m innocent!"

’ He’s right about that, this whole case smells fishy. For the perpetrator to be revealed shortly after the incident was brought out in the open is too good to be true.’

’ It’s obvious what he’s saying is true and someone else must be behind this but that doesn’t mean we can just let him go since he’s the only real lead we have in this case.’

’ The Vice Captain would definitely give me an earful if he learns I allowed our only possible lead to leave. I’m sorry but you’ll just have to stay here in the meantime until we can pinpoint the real mastermind behind this whole troublesome ordeal."

" If you’re innocent, then please do prove it. I’d be more than happy to let you go if you do."

" Then what if I vouch for him?" Gerald flinched when he heard the voice of another within the room, turning to see a blonde haired beauty with emerald eye’s and a curvy, voluptuous figure. Behind her stood two other enforcer knights with helpless looks on their faces.

’ What’s she doing here?’ Su Ping was surprised to see who had just stepped in through the door.

" Sir please forgive us, we wanted to stop her but the young miss..." said one of the enforcer know behind Victoria.

" It’s ok." Gerald gestured for them to ease up before looking at Victoria who was adorned in a simple cloak.

’ What could the heiress of the viscounty be doing all the way here. Her clothes suggest that she must’ve snuck out but why? Was it because she heard he was captured.’ Gerald stole a glance at Su Ping, feeling confused. This whole case was becoming more and more misleading, than he liked.

What the both of them didn’t know was that Victoria who refused to head back to the estate without seeing her master, had been somewhere close by when Su Ping was taken into custody.

" It’s an honor to meet you Lady Victoria." Gerald greeted the heiress but she didn’t even spare him a glance, instead, she was only staring at the man within the cell.

" Officer, I’d like you to release this man right this instant." Victoria said without batting an eye.

" R-Release him? But young miss, he’s a suspect to our case." said Gerald, he was stunned by the lady’s straightforward command.

" Are you trying to say you’ll defy my orders?" Gerald gulped when Victoria’s icy cold gaze landed on him.

Enforcer knights, though, supposedly pursuers of the law, were actually still just knights in a sense and knights would always have a master. The term enforcer knights, were just a group of knights personally created by a noble of a specified region to keep peace within their territory. They were different from household knights who’s task was to attend to the nobles household personally.

This was also one of the reasons Su Ping was unwilling to clash with the Montgomery household so easily, taking over their viscounty would mean facing all their forces which included every knight under their control, whether household knights or enforcer knights.

The Household Knight Captain and Vice Captain of the Montgomery household were already Lvl 3 Rare tier unit’s, same as the Captain of the enforcer knights within Rose City. With several city’s under their viscounty, it stood to reason that they would possess even more string units under their command.

" N-No, Of course not young miss but, He really is a suspect... If I let him go, who knows what he might do."

" A suspect? Can you listen to yourself. You dare call the very man who personally escorted my sister all the way back to Rose City, a suspect?"

’ H-He did what?’ Gerald’s eyes turned daze, not expecting to hear such a thing. His reaction was natural since the news of Su Ping’s family of four helping Esmeralda, hadn’t really spread much on account of the Viscount deliberately not spreading it at the gala, even though he promised.

’ This... Since he personally escorted Lady Esmeralda back home, then doesn’t that make him the least possible suspect?’ Gerald sighed, thinking to himself that he really shouldn’t jump to conclusions too quickly.

" F-Forgive me young miss, I had no idea." Gerald bowed his head in apology but then hurried up to unlock the door to Su Pings cell when when he noticed the heiress’s growing impatience.

" Thank you for coming to my aid, My lady "

Su Ping stepped out of the cell, and bowed before the heiress.

’ I can’t let them think there’s actually something going on between me and Victoria to avoid suspicions.’ Su Ping didn’t want the Viscount to turn his attention towards him, it was best for him to remain like this. The more the viscount underestimated him, the easier it would be for him to get rid of the man and lay claim to th

e viscounty.

"...."

" There’s no need to thank me, it’s the least I can do for my sister’s helper."
