Chapter 27: Rei Miyamoto – Humanity Has Evolved, But Forgotten Her

“Hey!” Rei Miyamoto leapt down from above, landing in Lynn’s arms like a homing dove returning to its nest. A soft thud followed as her body collided with his chest, and Lynn immediately felt the impact of the girl’s weight against him.

“Thank you!” Rei quickly stepped back from his arms and bowed deeply, then couldn’t help stealing a glance at his arm. Her ears reddened slightly.

Such strength… he caught her so easily, like it was nothing.

Next came Saya Takagi. She was a bit more timid—kept her eyes shut tight the entire jump, too afraid to look. Only when her feet finally touched solid ground did she breathe a sigh of relief.

“We’re alive!”

The decision to jump had been unanimous. None of them had expected it would actually be so easy—they’d braced for injuries, but instead, it all felt oddly surreal. Like something out of a dream.

After thanking Lynn as well, the group finally came together. But one hurdle passed only meant another waited ahead.

Rei Miyamoto looked down—and froze. Corpses. All of them—nothing but the undead.

Though the staircase had been destroyed, the walking dead had unknowingly piled atop one another, forming a grotesque makeshift structure like a mound of bodies reaching upward.

If they didn’t do something soon, those things would climb their way up.

“What do we do?” Rei asked instinctively, her eyes turning toward the only man among them.

To her and Saya, the undead were terrifying. But Lynn? He didn’t even spare them a glance.

“Saeko,” he said calmly. “You handle it.”

“Huh?” Rei and Saya blinked in confusion.

Saeko-senpai? What was she supposed to do?

“Yes, Master!”

M-M-Master?!

Rei and Saya’s eyes shot open. Did they hear that right? Did Busujima-senpai just call him… Master? What kind of play was this?

They glanced at each other, identical thoughts flashing through their minds. Could this be some sort of fetish roleplay? What exactly was going on between these two? Was this guy her boyfriend?

While they were still silently speculating, Saeko Busujima licked her lips—an unconscious, predatory gesture—and her eyes lit with an almost feverish gleam.

She had already been itching for action the moment she saw the corpses. But since Lynn hadn’t given the order, she’d held herself back.

Now, finally, she had permission. Time to test the power her Master had granted her.

Ting—

The blade left its sheath with a clear metallic chime. The orange light of dusk caught the steel, painting it in radiant gold.

The moment she wrapped her fingers around the hilt, a strange clarity flashed through her mind—almost like instinct taking over. With a sudden forceful movement, she brought the blade down in a sharp arc.

Rrrip—!

The air itself split with an explosive shriek, and a gleaming white arc surged forward.

Splat!

The mound of undead was sliced through instantly. Blood sprayed high as the corpses tumbled apart. Anyone watching closely would see—every severed surface was flawlessly smooth, like it had been cut by a razor.

“Haaah…” Saeko’s breathing quickened slightly at the sight of blood gushing from the wounds.

Lynn, however, frowned.

Noticing his expression, Saeko immediately calmed herself and looked toward him cautiously.

“Next time, go for the heads,” Lynn said, his tone light but instructive. “Otherwise, it’s inefficient.”

That was the problem with these things—unless the head was destroyed, they didn’t die so easily. The visual impact of Saeko’s slash had been impressive, yes—but those corpses without decapitation were still writhing.

“Yes, Master!”

Saeko let out a breath of relief. Good—he didn’t hate it.

She’d gotten a little too excited, and the bloodshed had tugged at something deep inside her. She might’ve exposed a bit too much of her true nature.

Afraid that Lynn’s frown meant disapproval, she had panicked internally. Now, with her Master’s instruction, she drew a deep breath and composed herself. Then she resumed.

This time, each swing of her blade was measured and precise—every strike aimed directly at the skulls. The undead fell like dominoes, one after another, their heads cleanly severed.

Rei and Saya, meanwhile, were completely dumbfounded. Sword… sword aura?!

Did Busujima-senpai just unleash sword energy?! Was this still Japan?!

They exchanged glances again, identical shock reflected in each other’s eyes. Could it be… amidst the undead crisis, humanity had already begun to evolve?

“Wow! Saeko-chan, you’re amazing!!” Shizuka clapped excitedly.

Wait, what? No shock at all?

Rei and Saya were screaming internally. That was supernatural! Real-life sword energy!

And Dr. Marikawa was just clapping like this was a school festival performance?!

The two girls were bursting with questions—desperate to ask Saeko what had happened to her. But when they saw the increasingly twisted smile on her face as she slaughtered the undead with growing delight…

They decided to keep their mouths shut.

Ten minutes later, Saeko exhaled lightly and lowered her blade. The ground below had become a veritable meat grinder.

“How do you feel?” Lynn asked.

“Subarashii,” she said, eyes glinting with a dangerous light.

She seemed in decent condition, Lynn thought. Ten minutes of nonstop slashing, and she was only slightly out of breath. It looked like these demonic sword attacks didn’t cost much stamina.

Still… Saeko hadn’t realized something yet. She didn’t actually need to use the blade.

The slashes came from her body—any part of it. Even a hand, a foot, a finger—so long as she willed it, she could release the sword aura from anywhere.

That was the power of the Sword Demon. But Lynn didn’t tell her just yet. Instead, he simply offered praise.

“Well done.”

Instantly, Saeko snapped out of her bloodlust. Master… praised her! Her eyes sparkled, and her thighs squeezed together on instinct. Something… leaked out.

“Since the undead are gone, let’s move on,” Lynn said casually, but instead of heading for the staircase, he turned toward the window.

The area below was soaked in blood and corpse matter—far too unsanitary for his taste. And anyway, the undead had only been left there for Saeko to farm experience. If they’d wanted to leave, they could’ve just jumped out the window from the start.

Crash—

With a gentle tap, the third-floor window shattered into pieces.

Lynn glanced toward Rei and Saya, who were huddled together, still trembling after watching Saeko’s slaughter fest.

He didn’t bother with their mental state. He simply grabbed them—one in each hand like kittens—and stepped onto the edge of the window.

“Wait—!”

Realizing what was about to happen, the girls opened their mouths to protest. But it was too late. Lynn leapt.

“Aaaaaaaahhh!!!”

They wanted to scream, but didn’t dare—it might attract more undead. So they could only clamp their hands over their mouths, cry silently, and pray it would be over soon. Even after landing safely, they were still shaking.

“Heave-ho~!” Shizuka Marikawa followed with a cheerful cry, leaping down as well.

Saeko came after her, landing with practiced ease. For them—low-tier demons—the height posed no challenge.

Rei and Saya could only laugh bitterly. Now it was confirmed.

Humans really had evolved. But somewhere along the way… they’d been forgotten.
