Looking at Ellsworth, Keh was about to say something, but Ellsworth added calmly, “Actually, between the two of us, she doesn’t like either of us. I’ve read her diary.”

Keh had wanted to say more, but Ellsworth said he’d read Harriet’s diary.

For a moment, Keh felt that whatever he wanted to say seemed powerless.

Turning to look at Ellsworth, a night breeze blew by. Keh

suddenly asked, “Then do you like Hara? Are you sincere with

her?”

Ellsworth turned to look at Keh and fell silent.

It wasn’t until the nearly finished cigarette burned his fingers

that he snapped out of it, startled, and tossed the cigarette into

the nearby trash can.

Then, with both hands in his pockets, he looked at the flowers

and trees ahead, his face expressionless. “Before I read her

diary, I wanted to live a good life with her. I wanted to be a

father soon.”

Ellsworth didn’t answer his question directly. Keh asked, “Still haven’t gotten over Sylvia?”

When Keh mentioned Sylvia, Ellsworth just smiled and said

nothing.

His gaze grew distant as he stared at the night scene in the yard for a long time. Then Ellsworth stood up and said, “Let’s go

back.”

With that, the two brothers walked back toward the vi.

The yard wasrge, and the breeze was cool on their bodies, but Ellsworth was weighed down with heavy thoughts.

He hadn’t forgotten Sylvia-he still hadn’t forgotten Sylvia.

If it weren’t for Sylvia, he probably wouldn’t have made it this

far.

How could it be so easy to forget?

When they reached the steps of the vi, Keh suddenly

looked at Ellsworth and said, “Since you never thought about

divorce, then live well with Hara from now on. Hara isn’t a

Ellsworth smiled. “Got it.”

A moment passed.

When the two entered the house, Patsy asked Ellsworth loudly, “Ells, are you and Hara going back to Auburn Heights tonight, or staying at the Townsend’s mansion?”

Hearing this, Ellsworth looked at Harriet and asked, “Stay at the

Townsend’s mansion?”

Harriet said, “Let’s go back to Auburn Heights. I have to go to

work tomorrow, and I need to pack up tonight.”

Patsy: “Alright, then you two go back.”

So, after saying goodbye to the elders, Ellsworth drove Harriet

back to Auburn Heights.

On the way back, Harriet sat in the front passenger seat

because Ellsworth had locked the back doors.

The car was very quiet. Ellsworth gripped the steering wheel

with both hands, while Harriet turned her face to look at the

night scenery outside.

At that moment, Ellsworth’s phone rang. It was a call from

Kelsey.

Instead of using the car’s Bluetooth, Ellsworth picked up the phone and answered it at his ear.

‘Just left the Townsend’s mansion, on the way back now.”

“Alright,e to thepany in a couple of days.”

“I’ll have someone check with the Housing Bureau.”

“It’s fine, we’ll talk about itter.”

“Okay, hanging up now. You should get some rest too.”

Throughout Ellsworth’s entire phone call, Harriet didn’t move a muscle, not even turning to look at him once.

There had been too many incidents like this. The frequency of his contact with Kelsey in a single day was more than he spoke

to her in a whole year.

Resting her cheek in her palm, Harriet gazed out at the night,

not thinking much. She simply enjoyed the peace of the

moment.

Seeing Harriet so calm and indifferent, Ellsworth nced at her.

Noticing she was daydreaming the whole time and never once looked at him, he reached out with his right hand and gently pinched the back of her neck.

It took Harriet a while to react to Ellsworth’s touch. After a

moment, she turned to look at him and asked quietly, “Is there

something you want?”

As soon as Harriet spoke, Ellsworth immediately lost interest. He quickly withdrew his hand from her neck, his eyes

expressionless. “Nothing.”

After hearing this, Harriet calmly withdrew her gaze from his

face and looked back out at the night.

Now, she no longer tried to make conversation with Ellsworth,

nor was she afraid of awkward silences.

At eleven o’clock, when the two returned home, Jacquelyn and

the others were already asleep.

Harriet hadn’t told Jacquelyn and the others that she and

Ellsworth would being back tonight.

When they went upstairs, Harriet noticed that Patsy wasn’t

staying at Auburn Heights, so before reaching the master

bedroom, she stopped at the guest room door.

But when she put her suitcase down and reached out to open

the door, she found that the guest room she usually stayed in

wouldn’t open.

Thinking it was just her imagination, she pressed down on the

doorknob a few more times, but the door still wouldn’t open.
