CHAPTER 148: CHAPTER 148- PUBLIC EXECUTION

Before the spectators even had the time to think what that noise exactly was, a figure appeared out of the front door. Decked out in greyish white armor of exquisite finish from head to toe, the person carried themselves with grace and power that cannot be found in an ordinary person.

Strapped on their waist was a long sword, and on their back flowed a pristine blue cape. Whether it was their overwhelming presence or the emblem on their armor, it clearly indicated that they were a knight.

However, what was with the person’s rough appearance? If not for the exquisite knightly armor on them, one would almost mistakenly associate them with a gang member of some criminal organisation.

SPLAT.. SPLAT... as the knight walked, he made that disturbing wet noise. When the spectators looked down, they finally solved the mystery behind those sounds.

Blood!! The wet sounds were from the blood sticking to the boot of the knight. As he walked passed, one could also see a trail of bloody steps.

The knight dragged three bodies behind him, who almost seemed like they were dead. However, the faint movement of their chest indicated that they were still alive.

"I-Is that the boss of the Mafia Cosa Nostra?" one of the spectators identified the body being dragged behind.

"It’s not only him, I can also see the labor union leader and the guild master of the merchant guild".

The observers were shocked. What was going on? Why were these three people being dragged by the knight? What’s more, one of them was even Cosa Nostra, a mafia that ran its own militia.

Did he just lose out to a knight?

"Something big is going to happen in this city, my intuition is telling me".

They saw the knight off as he slowly walked passed them. His departing figure was suave and impactful.

The events that occurred that day caused the city to be wide awake at night. And just like the citizens feared, the next day, numerous knights came down from the Governor’s mansion. Each and everyone of them evoked fear and awe in the citizens after the last night’s events.

The Knights brought lumber and made a makeshift scaffold that overlooked the entire city square.

"W-What are they going to do with that?"

"Shh, don’t speak. I don’t want the attention of those knights on me because of you".

Even without needing to ask, it was clear to everyone what that scaffold was for. There were three stakes erected there, and the knights were calmly guarding that place. What would come next was naturally...

"Lord Reinahrdt Arcknight, the new Governor of the city, is now arriving. Everyone, salute!!"

A knight shouted. Immediately, the others thumped their chest and performed a knightly salute.

The spectators were confused; some imitated the knights and saluted and while others remained in their position.

Soon, the Governor came riding on his horse. Impressive as the warhorse was, the man riding on top of it was even more outstanding. Long blonde hair like molten gold, powerful eyes that could stare into one’s soul, tall height, and a large build.

The man who was their new Governor, was an intimidating and the most handsome man they had ever seen. Dressed in a dark black suit and a fur coat over, he exuded a regal and noble authority that Baron Chetak could never.

Reinhardt stood at the scaffold and observed the masses, his eyes bearing down on them. Thanks to his Divine Trait [Unyielding Presence], a passive ability that exerted his divine authority on everyone and everywhere, he quickly became the centre of attention.

"Greetings, everyone. I am Reinahrdt Arcknight, the new Governor of this place that I am going to call Snowpoint City from now on."

This was his first time addressing the masses of this city; as such, he tried to be a little intimidating and give off the aura of a man in power. His words, though dignified, were also filled with unbridled haughtiness.

"Since the city is going to change its name, that means that it’s also going to be born anew. I do not care how Baron Chetak used to rule before. However, now that I have stepped in, all the old laws and customs will change. From this point on, this will be a new city with new laws".

At this point, someone raised a hand. Their body trembling ever so slightly from the gutsy thing they just did.

"Go on, ask what your concern is," Reinhardt gestured with his chin for the man to go on.

"C-C-Changing the laws... Can you do something like this?"

Immediately after saying that, he started regretting. However, he still endured it and continued, "If the laws change, then what about us? Will all of us need to change our ways and livelihoods?"

Everyone looked at the new Governor, their eyes asking the same question.

"Hmm, good question. Yes, I can change the laws." Saying that, the latter showed them the decree that was passed onto him by the royal family of the kingdom.

"According to this decree, I have the authority to govern my city as I see fit. So long as the new laws do not go against the authority of the crown or the kingdom, I basically can do anything"...

"Now for your other questions. Yes, you will all have to change your livelihoods. While there are some things that can stay as it is, most of the customs of this place are sickening. There is a need for you all to introspect upon yourself and think over how you are doing things. If you can’t do that and cannot accept my new laws, then you are free to leave. The city, as per the decree, is mine and so is the land you are living in".

Everyone gulped; their worst fear finally came true. What they feared the most was the new Governor changing the existing hierarchy of the city and building a new pyramid.
