CHAPTER 44: 44

XAVIER

I got to where the warriors were training with high spirits and decided to join them.

One of my men was saved today, and I couldn’t be happier.

After thirty minutes of training, I went to check on the warriors building the barrier.

They were doing well, but they were incredibly slow, so I added more hands to help make the work faster.

Brian came back to meet me.

"Any luck?" I asked.

"Some warriors are on their way in search of wolf’s bane. They should be back by sundown today or by dawn tomorrow." He informed me, his gaze shifted to the males at work.

"Do you think we stand a chance?" He asked his gaze still on the men.

"With a doctor with us now, I think we do stand a chance," I replied confidently. He knew I was referring to Nylah.

He let out little nods. "Okay."

"I’ll be right back." I excused myself as I remembered the assignment I gave to the storekeepers.

"Did you find any?" I asked even before I got to the door. I needed everything to be put in place as fast as possible. We were little compared to our enemy, and if we had stand a chance to win, we have to act fast.

"We found some, but they haven’t been used before. The ancient healers discovered it and called it evil. All the seeds were burned, and the plant was prohibited to be grown." The head storekeeper explained.

I took the book from him and glanced at the flower,

"Why did they call it evil? No plant is evil." I asked.

"It’s believed that it’s a plant of ill luck. It was cursed by the mighty healer when her brother used the plant to fight against their Alpha and took the throne. She cursed it. Saying no one would get help from the plant and doom will befall whoever uses it." Another explanation, but it only made me impatient.

"So, what do we do? There must be something else in these books." I gestured to the books scattered around the big table.

They bit their lower lip at my question, avoiding eye contact with me.

This wasn’t going to do. Plants were the only thing that could fill in the space of more warriors, and if we didn’t have that, I wasn’t sure we’d conquer.

"Keep searching. We need to come up with something before the war in three days!" I voiced my frustration.

"Before that, find any herb that has healing properties and take them to the hospital. Any herb you know would help with injuries. The doctor would make use of them. We need all we can find." I stormed out with those words.

Every other thing was going as planned, and the hospital had long lines of wolves who’d heard what happened the previous day and were interested in learning from Nylah.

A smile tucked at my lips as I caught sight of her attending to them. Who knew that Nylah was more than just a slut, who knew she would be of help to my pack.

For the first time since I bought her, I thanked the goddess that she let her steal my watch and I delayed before taking action and bringing her to my pack. Who would’ve saved my pack this time around if she wasn’t here?

I realized that I was indebted to her.

My smile faded immediately after I got a call from my informant.

"What’s up?" I asked with uneasiness in my voice.

"They’re almost ready with preparations. They’ll be marching out the day after tomorrow by dawn." He explained and my heart clenched.

"Okay," I replied and my mind linked my Beta so he could hurry the men up.

We needed the wolf’s bane to come in fast so we could dip all the arrows in it.

There was nothing more we could do now, we just needed to watch everything play out. And hope they play out well.

I didn’t realize I’d skipped breakfast and lunch. First, it was from the happiness of having someone capable of treating the sick and injured but later on, it was from anxiety of having our enemy catch up to us when we weren’t prepared.

I settled down for dinner in the dining room. Brian was still out, with the warriors, I’d passed the message and he took it upon himself to ensure they finished the barrier before the next day so I was pretty much alone in the room before Nylah stepped in and took the closest seat to my right.

"How was your day?" She asked with a seductive smile that made my chest hurt.

"Stressful but fulfilling," I replied, fitting a fork with chicken into my mouth, while my gaze was pinned on my little slutty doctor.

"You?" I asked, trying to keep up the conversation.

"Stressful too but I don’t know about fulfilling." She almost giggled a blush that made my smile widen.

She was so innocent, so pure and that was what attracted me to her in ways that I couldn’t resist.

I wanted to pound her into a pathetic mess, take her until she had no trace of innocence left in her.

"I saw you earlier, you looked really happy to help out." I continued, my eyes never leaving her facial frame.

"Yeah, I’m glad I can help the pack and its members. I just hope we win the war." She replied and I could see her expression shift with worry.

She was worried about the war and has been using the hospital to distract herself.

"With you on our side, I’m positive that we will win," I said with a confident shrug and dropped my fork.

"Do you need another kind of distraction to take your mind off it?" I asked, my palm open to receive hers.

I wasn’t going to take no for an answer.

She smiled and placed her palm in mine and I took her into my lounge, to finish what we started earlier. My wolf was starving.
