CHAPTER 61: 61

XAVIER

"So, what’s your plan concerning Rex? He’s healed from the wound. What’s next?" Brian asked one of the afternoon we were at the office.

He knew what transpired the last time and how Rex and I never got along. Rex carried himself like an enemy, so I treated him like one.

I was quiet for some time. I’d been hearing my father’s wish in my mind frequently these days, and it felt wrong to push him out there like the last time.

Rex was just a rebellious wolf who acted before he thought. If I send him away again, he might get his head chopped off his neck, and I might be too late to save him. I wasn’t going to take that chance.

We had scores to settle, but I wasn’t ready to have my father’s words replaying in my head every single time.

"He will stay in the pack for now... until I figure out what to do with him," I replied. Although Brian nodded, I knew he wasn’t convinced.

"Also, I think I have the perfect job for him," I stated.

"He brought the idea about the Pakistani investors. I want him to pull it through. If he can pull through an investment with them, he will handle them for the period of the contract." Brian looked taken aback by my words.

And he hesitated.

"You can speak, Brian." I prompted, and he finally broke the ice.

"Isn’t this risky considering his history with clients?" He asked, and I nodded. Agreeing to the obvious.

"It is," I replied. "But he has to get his head in the game eventually. I will follow up on everything that is happening and guide him. I can’t keep chasing him away."

Sawyer bobbed his head. He didn’t say another word. I knew he was worried, but I had it under control this time around.

"Call him for me. I need to have a word with him." Brian nodded and left my office.

After a few minutes of Brian’s absence, Rex showed up in my office.

"You sent for me." He muttered.

We found it hard to stand each other’s presence, but we would have to learn that now that we will be together a lot.

"I did. Sit down." I replied, and he slumped into the seat opposite my table.

"I was thinking about moving forward, and I decided that you won’t be leaving the pack again," I started, and I could see the shift of expression on his face.

He certainly wasn’t expecting that.

"That Pakistani investor you spoke about, I would like you to arrange a meeting with them. Let’s see if you can get the company that investment. If you succeed, you’re going to handle it for the entirety of the contract." Rex looked surprised to hear me say those words.

He nodded after some seconds.

"Thank you, Xavier. I hope you don’t chase me out again." His face drew a smile, so I smiled along.

"I saw that female who was at the mansion before." He chuckled mid-sentence.

"What’s up, man? You upgraded her pretty quickly. Did she warm your bed so much you didn’t want to spend a night without having her?" He was referring to Nylah, and it felt offensive for so many reasons.

However, I kept calm. Thinking of other ways to reply him that wouldn’t be so rude.

"Rex, I would like that for the period you are here. You leave matters that concern her to me, okay?" I said in the most friendly voice I could manage, but it still came out cold and hoarse.

Rex recoiled, with a smugish look on his face. Then he raised both hands in mid-air in mock surrender.

"Okay, big brother."

"When do we start?" He asked, changing the topic.

"Next week. Get your final rest this week. By next week you will begin work. And if you do well, I might give you a high position in the pack. All you have to do is put your best into it and get us the contract." I pumped him, and he gave a ready nod.

I excused him, and as he left, I was left with my thoughts.

Rex had seen Nylah. I wonder how the duo caught up. I broke their little relationship at the mansion, and now they had seen each other again.

I made sure that Rex came nowhere close to Nylah, but as it stood now, I had no other option than to let him stay in the pack. That will warrant them to see each other often.

I left my office and went to my chambers. I’d left Nylah there this morning when I woke. The sun was up, so the chances of seeing her still laying there were slim. And just like I presumed, she was not in my room.

I went to hers, but it was locked, so I sent guards to check the hospital while I went to check the garden. The hospital wasn’t a place Nylah would like to go after waking up. She would pick the garden.

Getting to the garden, I saw Nylah seated while Rex, who had just left my office, stood in front of her. He was saying something amusing. Only that could explain the smile on his face.

Bile churned in my throat, but I held back from reacting the way I felt. Maybe it was just a friendly chat. I didn’t want to scare Nylah again.

So I cleared my throat loud enough for both of them to hear.

Rex flashed a smirk when he saw me, and that sent all the wrong signals to me, but I pushed it aside. I wouldn’t overreact with Nylah there. I will only scare her.

"Nylah, come with me," I called, and she ran to my side without waiting for two seconds.

A small smirk played on my lips at her responsiveness to me.

I looked up at Rex.

"Have a good day. Don’t forget our discussion." He wasn’t smiling like before, and I didn’t care. He knew the boundaries he shouldn’t cross.

He knew Nylah was mine, and I had warned him.

I could tolerate anything in this his coming back. Anything, including failure to get us the investment or fucking things up but I didn’t know if I could tolerate him getting close to my woman.
