CHAPTER 75: 75

XAVIER

I had to admit that the old man knew his shit. How else could I explain his knowledge about the goods my rival had stacked up in his underground warehouse.

Brian and I didn’t speak about him again, but we both knew that we had been defeated. Our expectations were cut short and exceeded even.

I changed my mind about getting back to the pack when we were already halfway there.

"What’s the problem?" Brian asked, surprised that I asked him to stop the car.

"I need to see Rex first before going to the pack." I replied.

"I thought you did." He asked. I smacked my lips but didn’t respond.

I wanted to confront Rex again. I knew he would be smug when he learned that what the old man said came through, but I wanted to push further, see if I could get anything from him.

"I want to see him again." I replied and tried to alight the car, but Brian held me back.

"Don’t." He said.

I arched my brows.

"Don’t go see him. It’s unlike you, and you will come off as desperate and confused." He said, and it made a lot of sense.

Desperate and confused were not in my character, so it would be odd.

"Just do whatever your mind tells you to." He added, and I relaxed, pressing my back against the car seat.

I let out a deep sigh. Brian was right as always. He was the one to think things through before he said them, and they were always accurate.

Brian stepped on it, and we were soon on our way to the pack again.

If the old man was a gift sent to us by the moon goddess, then we were the most favoured pack. But if he was sent by someone else, it would be a huge problem for us in the future. I would have to keep an eye on him moving forward.

We got to the pack, and I went to freshen up first, tried to clear my mind off the topic a bit, and when I was done, I came down to supervise the pack. That was when I saw the man.

He was in the middle of a meal and he didn’t notice me until I got so close. He looked up, a rope of spaghetti dropping at the side of his mouth.

Then he smiled and sucked it in.

"Hello Alpha, how did it go? You are back quite early." He remarked and asked about the reason I left the pack in a hurry earlier.

I sat opposite him, my eyes pinned on him but he didn’t seem to care. He ate his meal heartily.

"It went well..." I almost didn’t want to admit that it went exactly like he said, but when he asked me himself, I had to give it up.

"Did you find your goods where I asked you to check?" He asked again, so casually.

I gritted my teeth and swallowed my pride and hesitation.

"Yes. Yes, I did." I replied, and he smiled sheepishly.

"How did you know that it was going to be there?" I asked, curious.

He shrugged and flashed me a smile.

"I suppose you already know how I knew about that." He replied.

I bit back my words and carefully thought of what my next words would be.

"What do you want?" I asked.

He paused and looked up from his food.

His face was serious, and the little wrinkles on his face that reduced because of the portion he had were visible.

"You helped me, treated me, and kept me alive, and you welcomed me into your pack even though I don’t have a wolf, and I am practically a stranger." He started. Although I didn’t really welcome him into the pack yet, I listened.

"I have nowhere else to go. And I have a rare gift from the goddess. If you are kind enough and if the goddess speaks to you, you can let me stay, and I will become a member of your pack. I will fight alongside your men in battle and defend your pack as I will my family. But if you do otherwise, then I will leave and continue my journey." He finished and scooped another fork of pasta in his mouth.

I bowed my head, contemplating what to do. Giving him an answer right away will be from my emotions, and it won’t be clear. I still needed to assess him.

"I don’t promise you anything. Be ready to leave at any time." I replied and stood up to leave.

As if it wasn’t enough that one problem was sorted out at the company, there was a call. The pack’s food supplier was threatening to pull out of the deal and supply to another pack what was supposed to be our food supplies.

They had tried talking to him and resolving the issue, but he was blabbing about how we were not paying him enough, and he got a better deal with another pack.

The thing is, we needed to stock up on food. Our lands were just not enough to plant the varieties we needed. They were fertile for herbs, but herbs were a lot simpler to grow.

Food crops needed expertise, and a lot of the pack members had forgotten how to plant and care for crops.

Just as I was thinking of a way to get our supplier to send the food, one of the guards manning my door walked in and leaned in close.

"Alpha, the old man is here to see you." He informed me.

I shot a glance at him that instant.

"Let him in." I replied, and the guard left while he excused himself, I began to wonder how the old man knew my chambers. He had never entered the building where my chamber was located, so talk more about knowing which door it was.

The guard returned seconds later with the man following behind him.

"Thank you for letting me in." The man began before I said anything.

"There is a problem that just came up, and I have the solution to it." He announced, and my eyes widened, I was caught off guard.
