CHAPTER 77: 77

NYLAH

I went back to Sofia after the heated sex and a change of clothes.

"How did it go?" She asked when she saw me.

I shook my head.

"He was convinced that she hears from the goddess and sees too. He said he has helped him do a lot of things for the company, and it was only wise for the pack to keep him for the future." I explained.

Sofia sighed. It wasn’t what she expected. I didn’t expect that either, but the Alpha was just looking out for the pack.

Her shoulders stooped low in disappointment, and I patted her back to cheer her up.

"We can still get him to try the leaf. Maybe just not now, but we will keep trying. The Alpha wouldn’t let us do that to him, so we have to do it on our own." I added, and she nodded.

We got back to the pack’s hospital together, and on our arrival, a female was brought in by some guards.

It was an emergency. She was bleeding and losing blood. Her wounds were deep, and almost every part of her body was clawed.

I couldn’t look twice.

"Please help! She went into the woods to find some mushrooms, and she was attacked!" A guard explained, and Sofia and I examined the wound.

"Did you see this animal?" I asked as I tore her clawed cloth with the scissors, and Sofia prepared some gauze to clean the wound with.

"No, it was already gone when we got there. All we saw was her lying on the floor panting." The guard explained.

"It would have been good if we saw what animal did that to her. That way, we would be able to treat her properly." Sofia muttered. The guards exchanged glances but didn’t say anything.

They probably wondered what an animal had to do with the treatment.

The guards left, and Sofia and I got to work. We cleaned the wounds and dressed it to stop the bleeding, and then we put her on a drip that was basically the water from the plant of life.

There was no illness it couldn’t treat.

The patient had already blacked out, so the only way we could get the water into her system was to give it to her as a drip.

"What animal do you think attacked her?" Sofia asked me when we were done.

I glanced at the female who was covered in bandages all over her body. All parts of her body were affected except one of her eyes.

"I can’t say that anyone did this. This is more than what a bear would do by far." I commented

"And the scars run deep, almost rupturing her ribs and vital organs. It was almost as if the animal used her to practice its clawing skills." She added, and we looked at her for some more seconds without words.

"I saw some scale-like wounds as well. Maybe the animal also had scales." I added, and Sofia’s brows arched.

"She is the only one who can tell us what she saw. We just have to pray that the plant of life does its work and brings her back." Sofia concluded and patted my shoulder before walking out of the hospital.

I followed behind her almost immediately. By the time we were done with her, it was already late, and I was exhausted.

So I went to the Alpha’s chambers, and he was in the middle of a feast. How did he know that I was starving?

I took a seat and joined him.

"I heard that someone who was badly injured was brought in." He mentioned it, and I nodded thoughtfully.

"That’s correct." I replied. "She is a female, and she was battered mercilessly."

"I see... Is there any info on who did it?" He asked, but I shook my head.

"I think the question should be ’what’ not ’who’. It looked like an animal tore her up just for the fun of it." I replied, and he paused from his meal for a second.

"I should’ve come to see it for myself. I thought it was the usual bear attack or maybe rogue wolves" he replied.

"This is way more than that. But by tomorrow, we will hear from the horse’s mouth what really happened." I assured, and he nodded.

"That’s good."

The next day, I got to the hospital as early as I could manage after warming the Alpha’s bed, and I was confused when I saw the crowd gathered in front of the hospital.

Did they bring in another patient? If they did, they would have called me. Maybe Sofia told them she could handle it. I reasoned and wondered why there was so much crowd in this part of the pack. It was unusual.

As I got closer, I noticed that someone was covered with clothing.

"Excuse me." I paved my way in and saw Sofia looking helpless and confused. I walked to her.

"What is wrong? Who is this person?" I asked, pointing to the figure on the ground. She shook her head and swallowed hard before she answered.

"She’s dead..." her voice cracked as she spoke.

"The lady is dead." she said again, her voice being firm this time.

I glanced at the corpse on the floor, and my legs felt weak instantly.

"How did it happen? Her vitals were stable, and the plant of life..." I trailed off.

"Did we make a mistake?" I asked again the sudden fear that our careless mistake might have killed someone made me scared.

Sofia shook her head again. She was holding herself back from bawling her eyes out.

"No, I checked. I checked everything we used and checked everywhere. Just couldn’t find anything we did wrong. I met the monitor, but she was long dead." Sofia explained, and I felt like sitting on the floor to mourn the death of a lady who was alive this time the previous day.

While we were still trying to make sense of the whole situation, the Alpha came. Some guards had informed him about what happened, and he marched his way to the hospital.

Ever since I and Sofia took over the hospital, there hasn’t been a death recorded in our history. This was the first, and it didn’t sit well with us at all.

This death would also make the pack members fear in their minds about coming to the hospital or getting treated by us.

They would feel like we don’t have the capacity to treat them any longer, and this is not a good feeling. It could make the pack members lose faith in the pack.

"What is going on here?" Alpha Xavier asked, and one of the guards explained everything to him. He looked angry and disappointed and sad at the same time as he looked at the body covered with clothing on the ground.

"Let’s give her a befitting burial." He instructed, and the guards carried the body to the grave site and dug her grave.

Alpha Xavier expressed his condolences to her family and promised to compensate them for their loss.

After the burial, Sofia and I were on our way back to the hospital, and we were both sad and sober.

When a voice cuts through from behind.

"Why don’t you ladies go to your rooms to rest?" We turned around to see the old man smiling at us.
