CHAPTER 88: 88

NYLAH

"What did he say to you? I heard you shouting." Sofia approached me when Rex had already walked away, so she met me breathing hard.

I glanced at her and continued to fume. She patted my back slowly in a bid to calm me down, and my anger turned to tears. I broke down and bawled my eyes out in her arms.

She led me into one of the rooms in the hospital and brought me a glass of water. I sat there until. I was able to calm down.

She sat beside me, although, waiting for me to calm down before she said anything.

"What happened, Nylah? Why were you crying? Did he say something unacceptable to you?" she asked, her voice was etched with worry, and I felt bad a bit for stressing her out because of my feelings.

I sniffed and shook my head.

"I guess I was just overwhelmed." My voice was thick with emotions.

"He didn’t say anything offensive to me, at least, I don’t think it was supposed to be offensive, but it made me cry."

"Would you mind sharing what he said to you?" She asked, leaning in close, so close I felt warmth within me.

She was like a mother who wanted to know who looked for her child’s trouble so she could go to war.

"He just said something about Alpha Xavier acting his usual way and suggesting that I work with him instead. He said I could be his ally or partner so that we can make something for ourselves in the pack." I explained, and she nodded thoughtfully.

"That sounds like what someone who has a hidden motive. What did you say to him?" She asked even though it was obvious that I didn’t agree to whatever he proposed from my shout and bawling afterwards.

"I didn’t agree to it." I replied, and she continued nodding.

"I would have said we should agree to it so we can know what he is on about, but there is a high chance that it would be a bad idea. Seeing that he might be looking for someone to push all the blame to when things go south and it might be too late to voice out when he does it before you and it might be too early to speak also when you have no evidence against him."

Sofia reasoned, and I was surprised as she analysed everything within a minute.

"That makes a lot of sense." I muttered, amazed by her brilliance.

"Yeah. Anyways, it is better to stay away from trouble so you did the right thing." she replied.

"I heard that the Alpha’s meeting will be in two day’s time." She informed me, and I squeezed my face.

"What is the Alphas meeting all about?"

"Oh, it’s just a gathering of all the Alphas in the realm, well, maybe not all of them but they basically go to different packs in the realm for an important meeting but lately, it is mostly to show off and flaunt their valuables so some Alphas who do not have what to show off don’t like attending the meeting."

"It is also a means for the other Alphas to scan the pack to see how things are being done over here so they can do it in their packs as well. It’s just a rat chase." She replied, looking disgusted by the time she was done.

"I see." I replied

"Do you think that Alpha Dmitri would be coming for the Alphas meeting with his daughter?" I asked, unable to hold back the question that had been bothering me.

"I’m sorry, Nylah, but there is a high chance that they will be present." He replied.

"You see, Alpha Dmitri is not just any Alpha wolf, he is one of the oldest Alpha wolves in the realm and he needs to be present in some certain meetings and this meeting is one of them." She explained, and I nodded.

Maybe that was the reason why Xavier kept his distance? Was he keeping himself for when they would come? I thought, but I couldn’t ask Sofia that.

"I guess we should prepare for the Alphas meeting then." I replied instead, suppressing the many questions in my head.

***

I wasn’t looking forward to seeing Xavier again until the night of the Alphas meeting, so I carried on with what I had to do prior to the Alphas meeting night.

And the night arrived sooner than I thought.

Sofia and I helped with the arrangement of the hall, but my mind was not really in what I was doing. Anxiety almost had the best of me. I kept looking up and kept replaying the questions I would ask him when I saw him.

I knew I would ask him if this was the reason why he ignored and avoided me? If he only let her leave the pack because he wanted to ruin me. If he was going to get married to her anyway and all that war shit was just a show to use my head and make me look like a fool.

"You okay?" Sofia asked from behind, and I almost jerked.

I didn’t expect anyone to creep up on me from behind.

"Yeah, I am." I replied curtly.

"Let’s go get ready. It is almost time." she replied and pulled me away from the table I was still arranging.

"The young females in the pack would look exceptionally beautiful tonight?" Sofia said with a smile.

"Why?"

"Respectable males and Alphas from other packs will be coming to the meeting, and they stand a chance of finding their mates at the meeting. You don’t want to look like a wet chicken when you meet your mate." She said

"Well, I looked like a wet chicken on my first night here." I replied, and she shrugged.

"That is true."

We freshened up, and I wore something simple. I wasn’t about to look for a mate at the meeting, I just wanted an audience with Alpha Xavier.

If I could get that, then I would finally move on and accept my fate.

By the time we got to the hall, it was packed with guests.

And I scanned the booming crowd eagerly until my eyes fell on a couple, but the male looked very much like Alpha Xavier.

The couple’s hands were intertwined, and they were greeting some elderly guests.

My eyes were locked at the couple and I approached them, just enough for me to see the man’s face and I froze when I saw that the man was indeed Alpha Xavier and the woman he held hands with was none other than Ivy.

My knees became weak, and I almost stumbled to the ground.
