CHAPTER 63: CHAPTER 63: I DON’T NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF
Even if the hospital’s confidentiality measures are strict, they can’t withstand people’s loose tongues letting things slip.
Moreover, after Marilyn Ford saw Anna Thornton at the hospital the last time, she grew suspicious. The more they tried to hide things from her, the more it fueled her rebellious curiosity.
So Marilyn Ford tipped off the journalists, creating chaos to make the media investigate the truth for her, but in the end, she inadvertently brought Conrad Sterling himself over.
The news didn’t leak because Conrad Sterling was protecting Anna Thornton and her daughter.
Even though the man always seemed to dislike Anna Thornton, he tolerated her repeated intentional advances, which could only be explained by their child.
Marilyn Ford discovered that Pop was suffering from aplastic anemia, a disease that could only be cured with a bone marrow transplant. It wasn’t hard for her to guess that Anna Thornton was doing all this to get Conrad Sterling to donate his bone marrow.
However, this time that woman got wise, and she didn’t reveal to Conrad Sterling that she knew the hidden agenda; instead, she approached Anna Thornton.
It seemed that Marilyn Ford’s ostentatious visit to the hospital a week ago was just a prelude. What she really wanted was for Anna Thornton and Conrad Sterling to have a huge argument.
"I can’t believe she tricked me?" Anna Thornton tapped her own head.
Recently, she was distracted by Pop’s illness and let her guard down.
Anna Thornton glanced back at Conrad Sterling, who slightly raised his chin.
"Did you really not tell her everything just to reconcile with Marilyn?"
"She was the one who approached me that day. Do you think I needed to?"
The man seemed rather smug, but he had a reason to be.
Marilyn Ford certainly didn’t want to give up on Conrad Sterling, even if this man had a reckless past with Anna Thornton four years ago and even had a child.
Their cold war would eventually end sooner or later, as Anna Thornton had already analyzed. Without Conrad Sterling, where would Marilyn find such a high-quality candidate for a backup boyfriend?
Anna Thornton couldn’t quite remember why she had quarreled so fiercely with Conrad Sterling. It was only after a week that she figured it out.
Like with Marilyn, without Conrad Sterling, where would Anna Thornton find such a wealthy benefactor who was also a perfect bone marrow match for Pop?
Thinking about this, she decided not to dwell on it anymore. She instantly plastered a smile on her face: "Since you say so, I believe it wasn’t you who let it slip. Let this matter... be bygone."
Considering that Conrad Sterling kept his promise by coming to the hospital today and even shaved his head for Pop... hmm, whether it was for Pop or not, Anna didn’t want to continue harping on the conflict from a week ago.
Hearing her sudden attentiveness, Conrad Sterling snorted coldly: "Didn’t you say before that you wouldn’t believe a word I say anymore?"
"Huh? Did I say that? I don’t think so."
Seeing Anna’s feigned ignorance, Conrad Sterling’s smile deepened uncontrollably.
The biggest difference between Anna Thornton and Marilyn Ford is that Anna is less concerned with her pride and doesn’t need psychological preparation. No matter how fierce the argument was or how harsh the words said, she could easily forget them if she wanted reconciliation, even denying what she had said.
It was known that Conrad Sterling also had a cold war with Marilyn Ford for a week.
However, there was no fighting or quarreling between them, just brewing a bit of emotion.
If they were to have a big row like Anna Thornton, neither would have the face to reconcile, which would likely lead to a hanging ending.
Perhaps because Anna always compared herself to Marilyn and asked Conrad what she was lacking, causing him to subconsciously recall the scenes of disagreements with both women at the same time.
But President Sterling probably forgot; in the previous cold war, Marilyn Ford was the one who came to make peace on her own initiative.
And during the conflict with the shameless Anna Thornton, after waiting a week without seeing her come to reconcile, it was he who took the initiative to come to the hospital... and even after hearing that Pop refused to eat, he specially got a new cropped hairstyle and was the first to explain to Anna Thornton.
"By the way, Conrad, are you hungry after donating blood? Shall I get you something to eat? What would you like for dinner?"
Anna Thornton thought that since Conrad donated blood for Pop, she should take care of him willingly.
But figured he’d likely not accept, so she casually asked: "Miss Ford won’t be coming over, will she?"
"What would she come here for?" Conrad retorted.
"You’ll be staying in the hospital for the next few days, won’t she visit? Or are you having Ethan come over to take care of you?"
Anna imagined that Miss Ford, being a wealthy lady, might not manage caretaking duties.
Unexpectedly, Conrad emphasized, "I don’t need anyone to take care of me!"
Marilyn has a special guest role in a film plan these days; she won’t come to the hospital.
Marilyn pretended not to know about Conrad’s donation of bone marrow to save Pop, as she understood she couldn’t oppose it, but her self-esteem wouldn’t allow her to act like it didn’t bother her at all.
"And what about your meals? You probably can’t get used to the hospital food, right?"
Even though Anna hadn’t spent many days at the Sterling Residence, she had seen firsthand how particular this man’s taste was.
"Isn’t there still takeaway?"
"True!"
Nowadays, convenience apps are very advanced, theoretically allowing everything one needs in life to be resolved by a single delivery app.
But shortly after Anna left, Conrad indeed felt a bit hungry.
It was then that he realized that the sophistication of current delivery apps still couldn’t keep up with his picky appetite.
He ordered from a few relatively high-end restaurants, yet after the food arrived, he just sniffed it and put it down.
The Sterling Residence employs three foreign chefs from different countries, and ingredients from their respective countries are flown in fresh daily, all for the sake of the freshest, most original taste.
Clearly, the restaurants near the hospital couldn’t match such standards late into the night.
Conrad already felt a bit unwell after donating blood, and seeing these perfunctory dishes ruined his appetite even more.
Requesting a meal from the Sterling Residence without pre-informing Granny Chandler would probably take two more hours.
By the time it reached eleven at night, who would still have the appetite?
Feeling frustrated, Conrad simply thought about going out to look around and personally scout for restaurants nearby that were still open.
Just as he pulled out the IV drip and got up, the door to the ward was pushed open from outside.
Conrad frowned, ready to be angry at whoever dared to enter his room without knocking—even if it were a doctor or nurse.
However, seeing that the person entering was Anna Thornton, he instantly returned to his usual nonchalance.
"Not asleep yet? I just went out to buy some fruit and brought you dinner as well. Would you like to eat?"
Anna said as she glanced down at the two bags in her hand and handed him the one containing the meal box.
"What’s this?" Conrad asked.
"Soup. It’s late and eating anything else isn’t good for digestion."
If it were meat or vegetables, Conrad could easily be picky about freshness.
But regarding soup... chicken soup can’t ever taste bad; perhaps he could make do with it.
Conrad finally extended his elegant hand to take the food Anna brought.
Yet after opening it, he caught a slightly fishy smell.
"What’s this soup?"
"Um, it’s pig liver soup."
