CHAPTER 158: CHAPTER 158 SHOWING OFF AND MAKING A FOOL OF ONESELF2_1
Wan Donglin’s mother arrived at the hospital first, accompanied by two assistants. She was tall, and the hardships of her early years had etched a stern expression onto her face. Upon entering, unlike other mothers who might wail and cry, she simply wore a tense expression. "Donglin, what’s happened to you?"
Wan Donglin sat up in bed, leaning against the headboard. His face was full of smiles, but his breathing was somewhat weak. "Honored Lady Daqing, you’ve finally come."
Wan Donglin’s mother, Liu Daqing, glared at her son. "Be serious. Show me the medical report."
As she read the medical report, her hands trembled slightly—a reaction even the calmest person might have. A deep sorrow washed over her stern face, seeming to instantly etch more wrinkles onto her forehead. She looked at her son in bewilderment, utterly thunderstruck.
"How could this be? Donglin, how could this possibly be? Haven’t you always been perfectly fine? Why would you suddenly contract such a disease?"
He spread his hands. "In the face of illness, everyone is equal."
Liu Daqing put down the medical report. "We must transfer you to another hospital immediately."
"With this illness, there’s no need to rush things within a day. There’s no hurry."
"How can we not be in a hurry? Child, you mustn’t delay your treatment!"
"It’s really not a big deal. The facilities here are quite good, really no worse than hospitals abroad."
"No! The sooner we act, the better the chance of saving you."
Losing her patience, Liu Daqing exclaimed, "I’ll arrange a private jet. It will come to pick you up tonight!"
"Transferring hospitals isn’t out of the question, but, Mother, you should at least wait for Zhou Ting."
"Zhou Ting already called me. She said she’ll definitely arrive tonight. She’s on a flight now and should be landing soon."
Liu Daqing paced a few steps in the room and sighed heavily. "Why did you have to fall ill now? Donglin, your wedding is just over twenty days away. For something like this to happen suddenly... what are we going to do?"
Wan Donglin spread his hands. "Mom, what do you suggest we do?"
"The banquet is booked, the invitations have been sent... Sigh, I just don’t know what to do. We’ll have to see what Zhou Ting thinks... I truly don’t know how she’ll react..."
They had been so looking forward to this joyous occasion for their two families; there hadn’t been many happy events in recent years. But just as everything was ready, this had to happen. Many of Zhou Ting’s influential colleagues from the United Nations had received invitations due to her work. Even if we notify them of a cancellation, how would we even word it?
Even the usually composed Liu Daqing was distraught. Her son has contracted such a disease; would Zhou Ting still agree to proceed with the wedding as planned? That girl is no fool.
Liu Daqing paced the room several times before stopping. "No, I need to speak with the doctor about his condition and have them arrange a consultation with a panel of experts."
Wan Donglin grabbed her hand. "Mom, please sit with me for a while. I haven’t seen you in almost a year. Don’t you miss me?"
Lady Daqing usually wouldn’t fall for such appeals, but the news of her son’s illness had struck her like a bolt from the blue, leaving her completely disoriented. Her son now held her hand, and as she looked at him, seeing how drastically thin he had become, his eyes sunken, her heart shattered. Though she maintained a stern expression, she did as he asked and sat beside him, tightly gripping his hand. She then turned to her two assistants and instructed, "You two, contact Professor Zhang immediately..."
Wan Donglin grinned. "Mom, why the rush? These things can’t be hurried."
She looked at him in disbelief. "Donglin, how can you still manage a smile?"
