CHAPTER 308: CHAPTER 308: REGRET MARRIAGE 2_1

Neither of them found it easy to refute what they heard.

Huang’s mother turned to Yan Xixi and said casually, "Xixi, you and Xiaojue work at the same company. I heard your company has a policy that if a couple both work there, one must leave. Now that your wedding date is set, you’ll have to announce it to your colleagues soon. Shouldn’t you consider resigning?"

This was what Yan Xixi dreaded most. Deep down, she didn’t want to resign so soon; she wanted to delay it for as long as possible. However, what Huang’s mother said was a practical concern. She glanced at Huang Xiaojue, who smiled and said, "Mom, don’t worry. The wedding is still quite a way off, isn’t it?"

"How can you say it’s a long way off? It’s just over three months away. We need to start preparing in advance. We can’t just wait for her colleagues to discover it, forcing Xixi to resign then, can we? You’re the general manager; you can’t give anyone grounds for gossip."

"Mom, you’re overthinking it."

Huang’s mother remained unconvinced. "How much more can she earn by working for another three months or so? In my opinion, Xixi should resign as soon as possible. Preparing for a wedding might sound simple, but there are countless trivial matters to attend to. Xiaojue will be busy with work, which is understandable. However, if Xixi could free herself up to help, all the details could be better managed. Then there’s renovating your house and buying furniture. We can help with that, but our choices won’t perfectly align with your tastes, will they?"

Huang’s father chimed in, "Your mother does make some sense. In companies like yours, it’s rather taboo for colleagues to marry. People might think Xiaojue is abusing his authority, and that wouldn’t look good. I also agree that Xixi should resign. She can always find another job after the wedding is done."

"Find another job? Xixi isn’t young anymore; she’ll be twenty-eight after the New Year. At her age, she really needs to start thinking about having children immediately. Staying home, doing housework, taking care of Xiaojue’s meals and daily needs, and focusing on having a baby—that’s what’s truly important."

Yan Xixi couldn’t get a word in. She just glanced dazedly at Huang Xiaojue.

He smiled. "Dad, Mom, Xixi and I will figure things out. You don’t need to worry."

Huang’s mother remained dissatisfied. "Aren’t we just trying to think things through for Xixi’s sake? Juggling work and trying to conceive isn’t good for a woman. It’s much better to rest at home, killing two birds with one stone, don’t you think? We’re not like other in-laws who pressure their daughter-in-law to go out and earn money. Xiaojue can support you for a lifetime; consider that your blessing."

Yan Xixi gave a forced smile and didn’t really respond.

Deep down, an ominous shadow loomed. The day previously chosen for registering the marriage was supposed to be a "lucky day," according to Huang’s mother. So why had she suddenly changed her tune today, calling it a "widow’s day"?

She wanted to ask Huang Xiaojue, but then it occurred to her that the exact day they received their marriage certificate didn’t really matter, so she didn’t press the issue.

Only after the two of them had left did Huang’s father finally complain, "Old woman, why did you have to meddle so much? They want to get their marriage certificate, so why did you make excuses to postpone it? Didn’t you see our son looked upset? He clearly wants to get the marriage certificate as soon as possible. Without the marriage certificate, Xixi isn’t willing to live in our house. Our son has to keep driving her back and forth. Can’t you show a little consideration for him?"

Huang’s mother let out a cold snort.

Huang’s father asked in surprise, "What’s gotten into you?"

Huang’s mother said coldly, "That woman is just pretending to be virtuous."

"What do you mean?"

Huang’s mother said angrily, "You old fool! You don’t know anything. Our son has been lying to us."

"What did he lie to us about?"

"Do you know how Yan Xixi got the injury on her head?"
