The CEO's Substitute Ex-Wife
Chapter 244: Wife’s Contentment
CHAPTER 244: WIFE’S CONTENTMENT
Ye Feimo was driving, and Wen Nuan was on her phone. As soon as she went online, she saw the news about today’s A City Film Critics Awards, which was everywhere. Wen Nuan frowned and turned off her phone again. Ye Feimo glanced at her. Just then, Wen Nuan looked up, smiled faintly, and closed the web page.
The car stopped downstairs at the apartment building. As soon as Ye Feimo unbuckled his seatbelt, Wen Nuan pounced, affectionately looping her arm through his and rubbing her head against his shoulder. "Ye Feimo, thank you."
Ye Feimo raised an eyebrow, reaching out to ruffle her hair, and asked with a smile, "Thank me for what?"
"Everything!" Wen Nuan said with a laugh. Ye Feimo was in a cheerful mood. He raised an eyebrow playfully, his dark eyes sweeping over Wen Nuan, a deep shade in them. "I don’t mind if you thank me in a different way."
Wen Nuan looked up, glaring at him annoyedly. This man was truly consumed by lust; why was he always thinking about that?
However, she narrowed her eyes and smiled, leaning close to his ear. "I can, but... this time, I’ll take the lead."
Ye Feimo’s eyes lit up. "Good girl. You understand repayment in kind. I’ll spoil you this once; it’s all up to you."
...
Tang Shuwen and Chen Xueru drove back, discussing the Golden Seal Awards along the way. From Tang Shuwen’s tone, it seemed Wen Nuan had no problem securing two awards at the Golden Seal Awards, though Best Actress was likely out of reach.
However, winning awards at the Golden Seal Awards in her first year was already a great honor for Wen Nuan.
Such glory was rarely achieved by others.
Tang Shuwen asked with a smile, "What about you, Best Supporting Actress?"
Chen Xueru shook her head and smiled, "That’s not something to worry about. Anning can’t monopolize all the awards; doing so would make things difficult for you. I’ve already won Best Supporting Actress; there’s no need to win it a second time. Besides, it doesn’t matter whether I win an award or not anymore."
Her life was now very peaceful and happy. Her only regret was that her son hadn’t recovered yet. Awards and such were not very important to her. It was certainly nice to be recognized, but if she wasn’t, she had no loss.
She was different from Wen Nuan. Wen Nuan was in her rising period and a newcomer; Chen Xueru had passed that stage.
"Are you sure you don’t need it?"
"I really don’t need it."
Chen Xueru smiled faintly. Tang Shuwen also smiled. Thinking of New Year’s Eve, he asked, "Xueru, New Year’s Eve is coming soon. Do you want to visit your parents’ graves?"
Chen Xueru had a tragic background, with her parents having passed away early. To spare her sadness, Tang Shuwen usually didn’t ask about her parents and didn’t know much about them. During their marriage, he hadn’t visited his in-laws’ graves. Both emotionally and logically, with New Year’s Eve approaching, it was time to go.
There was a custom in A City that married daughters, a few days before New Year’s Eve, should take their husbands back to their maiden home for a day. Since her parents were gone, lighting incense for them would still be good.
Chen Xueru looked at Tang Shuwen in surprise, as if taken aback that he would suggest visiting her parents. Tang Shuwen felt a pang in his heart and asked casually, "What’s wrong? Is something amiss?"
"Oh, no," Chen Xueru lowered her head. Their married life was steadily improving, without grand gestures or vows of eternal love. The resentment from before their marriage seemed to have dissipated. Life was very peaceful now.
They were meant to be together for a lifetime, weren’t they?
She was starting to believe that they were a family.
She considered Tang Si and Wen Lan family, but her feelings for Tang Shuwen had always been complex. She dared not invest too much, fearing disappointment, and even less dared to consider him family.
After so many years, she understood one thing: don’t place too much hope in outsiders.
You always have to rely on yourself for everything.
The greater the hope, the greater the disappointment, so she had grown accustomed to not hoping for anyone. Without expectation, there was no disappointment.
But now, to say she didn’t expect anything was a lie.
"We both have free time these days. How about we take Xiao Nian to sweep the graves the day after tomorrow? It’ll also give Xiao Nian a change of scenery," Tang Shuwen suggested. Chen Xueru nodded; at the mention of her son, she agreed to everything.
Tang Shuwen knew exactly where her weak spot was, and how to get her to agree.
Undeniably, he was a clever, considerate, and gentle man.
Such a man, in a woman’s eyes, was a quintessential Prince Charming. If she could forget the unpleasantness before their marriage, Tang Shuwen would truly earn full marks. She felt fortunate that, after all the hardships, she could still meet him.
As they were nearing home, Tang Shuwen’s phone rang. Chen Xueru saw him frown, say "I know, see you in a bit," and when he took off his earpiece, his eyes were dark and heavy, as if he was angry.
Chen Xueru rarely saw him angry. This was something she occasionally saw before their marriage, but never after.
Upon arriving at the Tang family home, Tang Shuwen said, "Xueru, I have something urgent to attend to. You go home first."
"Okay!" Chen Xueru smiled, thinking it might be company business, and didn’t say anything more. She unbuckled her seatbelt to get out of the car. Tang Shuwen suddenly grabbed her hand. She paused, looking back at him.
"What’s wrong?" Chen Xueru asked.
Tang Shuwen’s hand tightened, and a hint of unease flickered in his eyes. "Xueru, if someone tells you something one day, you must first verify it with me, and ask for my thoughts. You absolutely must not speculate on anything yourself, understand?"
Although Chen Xueru didn’t understand what he was talking about, she still nodded. Tang Shuwen watched her enter before driving away.
When Chen Xueru returned, Tang’s parents were in the living room. Seeing her return alone, Wen Lan asked, "Where’s Shuwen?"
"He had something urgent to attend to and said he’d be back later," Chen Xueru walked over. Xiao Nian was still the same. He had seen a psychologist, but there was no improvement. Everyone was at a loss. Xiao Nian was very resistant, and they felt for him, so they could only try again later.
"Xiao Nian, did you miss Mommy?" Chen Xueru hugged him and kissed him several times. Xiao Nian’s eyes were vacant, his expression blank. Her heart ached. Wen Lan comforted her, saying to take it slow and not rush. Chen Xueru nodded.
That was all they could do.
Outside the Zhao family’s villa, Zhao Yuning waited foolishly for Tang Shuwen. From a distance, he saw her standing by the gate in a pink long coat, waiting. His gaze darkened, his emotions unreadable.
As soon as he got out of the car, Zhao Yuning ran towards him and embraced him, tears falling.
"Shuwen, I missed you so much," Zhao Yuning said tearfully, holding him with satisfaction, as if he were her most precious treasure, clinging on and not wanting to let go, cherishing him greatly.
Tang Shuwen let her hold him and did not push her away.
Zhao Yuning held him for a long while, then slowly released him. Her face, tear-streaked like pear blossoms, was alluring, captivating, and easily stirred a man’s protective instincts. Time seemed to rewind before his eyes.
He felt as if he had returned to his high school days.
Back then, he was the school’s Prince Charming, popular with everyone. He heard that the liberal arts class’s beauty queen was difficult to pursue, highly arrogant. He and a group of mischievous friends made a bet to deliberately approach Zhao Yuning and win her over.
