The Chef Rules the Last Days
Chapter 586 - 584: Fungus Infected Zombie
CHAPTER 586: CHAPTER 584: FUNGUS INFECTED ZOMBIE
Su Mo couldn’t help but fall silent. If the surface of the continent truly became uninhabitable for humans two years later, it would mean that they would never see the light again, forever facing the cold metal walls.
Seen from a different perspective, they needed to cherish the two years they had.
Zhao Changsheng couldn’t help but say, "Do you think it’s possible to create a sun underground like that laboratory did before?"
Su Mo shook his head. "I don’t think so. Not only were those advanced devices already destroyed, but no one is capable of making such things at this stage."
Zhao Changsheng felt somewhat disappointed. She looked up at the sun overhead, feeling an indescribable discontent in her heart—if they were really going to lose the light and live in eternal darkness, she didn’t quite want such an ending.
Li He had finished throwing up by then, and Jianxiong brought him a bottle of mineral water to rinse his mouth, "Feeling any better?"
Li He didn’t give Jianxiong a dirty look for once but weakly responded, "Much better, thank you."
He didn’t refuse Jianxiong’s support and leaned heavily on him as he was helped back to the car.
They were currently on a highway, surrounded by dry fields that looked utterly lifeless.
"Let’s go. There’s probably no one around here," Su Mo said, sighing.
As night approached, they chose not to rashly enter the city but instead looked for a nearby roadside village to rest.
Coincidentally, there were signs of life here.
In the village just off the main road, there were traces of people moving and living, but what was strange was the village was too quiet, so quiet that even the sounds of zombies roaming were absent.
Li Qian also found the situation here to be weird, "There are no fewer than ten people who have survived here."
"Let’s not bother with that. Just find an unoccupied house to sleep in for the night. It’s getting dark," Jianxiong said, still supporting Li He, as the side effects of their previous extreme driving made his head still feel dizzy.
Lu Chen said indifferently, "Let’s find an uninhabited house to stay in."
In the end, Li Qian found a small villa in a mountain village, with only the front door inlaid with dingy tiles, while both sides were simply plastered with cement for this three-story building.
The door was wide open, and at this moment, a thick layer of dust had settled on the smooth floor.
Su Mo: "There aren’t any zombies inside?"
Li Qian shook his head. "There are several corpses, but no zombies."
Lu Chen led the way inside, a small living room on the left as they entered, a dining table on the right, with stairs in the middle leading to the upper floor.
After Zhao Changsheng and the others entered the house, they tightly closed the two big doors that were wide open.
As she left, she caught a fleeting glimpse of a figure from the window of the house across the street.
"The people here seem to be quite scared of us, huh?" Zhao Changsheng said, somewhat surprised as she walked into the living room.
The house, long uninhabited, had an acrid smell to it.
The group stepped onto the staircase, and on the second floor was another living room with two rooms on either side and a balcony.
Opening the door to the balcony allowed the cold wind to blow in, and everyone finally felt much better.
In the distasteful air, Su Mo noticed a body that had collapsed under the sofa, looking very strange as most of its head was gone, replaced by dense fungi covering the entire head. An axe was embedded in it—the cause of this zombie’s death.
"Such head mutations are really rare," Li Qian squatted in front of the corpse, not reaching out to touch it, but curiously said, "Was it some kind of virus infection that caused this mutation?"
"There’s something eerie about this," Su Mo looked around. On the third floor, there were two bodies in the exact same condition as the others, both having been overtaken by this fungal creature, resulting in their monstrous deaths.
Lu Chen opened a few somewhat clean bedroom doors and after checking them, he said, "Don’t touch the bodies, we’ll sleep here tonight."
Everyone consciously stayed away from the grotesque looking corpse. Li He, whose body had just started to relax, couldn’t help but frown upon seeing that thing. The next second, Jianxiong blocked his view with his body and said, "Stop looking at that disgusting thing. My sister’s cooking is really good, let’s go eat in the room."
With Jianxiong’s bootlicking expression, Su Mo didn’t even know what to say. Holding back her laughter, she entered the room as night fully descended.
The group cleaned up the room a bit, drew the curtains, and Lu Chen lit some candles. Su Mo took out the supplies from her bag, including the spicy crayfish she had made when she was bored last week.
On this silent night, Li He’s expression was shocked once again. The alert sounds from the Fire Ability User echoed in his ears, causing him to subconsciously conjure up a ball of fire in his palm.
"This is just...too much," he said.
After just one bite of crayfish, he had obtained Fire Power?
Indifferent to this, Su Mo said, "It’s time-limited, so don’t get too excited."
While they enjoyed the delicious food, the people in the next room communicated by writing on paper.
[The people next door are probably going to be in trouble soon, those things from the mountains are about to come down.]
[As long as we keep quiet and secure the doors, we’ll be fine. Let’s not concern ourselves with them.]
[Shouldn’t we go and warn them?]
[No way.]
The man who wrote no glared angrily at the woman in front of him, then pointed at the boy sleeping soundly beside them, calming the silent tension in the room.
After they had eaten their fill, Su Mo and Zhao Changsheng were given the beds, while the rest made do with sleeping on the floor.
The village at night was so quiet there wasn’t a sound to be heard.
Li Qian felt that something was off and kept his spiritual power continuously spreading.
On Su Mo’s stomach lay an arm belonging to Zhao Changsheng, and with a turn of her head, she could see the woman’s fox eyes shining brightly in the dark.
"Baby Mo, this is our first time sharing a bed."
Su Mo: ...
If she hadn’t already known that Li Qian and she were together, she would have been afraid of being devoured by her.
Seeing his woman cling to Su Mo like this, Li Qian felt a bit displeased yet helpless.
Lu Chen sat on the edge of the bed, tossed the arm back to its owner, and pulled Su Mo to his side, speaking softly, "Let’s sleep."
"Mm."
Zhao Changsheng, seeing Su Mo now a meter away, turned over with a displeased expression and went to sleep.
Behind the village was a barren mountain, and at this moment, seven or eight incredibly fast creatures were descending quickly. The sound of their bodies brushing against leaves and snapping branches was jarringly out of place in the stillness of the night.
Li Qian immediately woke them up when his spiritual power detected the noise, "Something’s coming."
Since Li Qian had detected it, Su Mo wasn’t worried in the slightest. Lying in bed without moving, she whispered, "If it’s not coming for us, just leave it alone."
