The Chef Rules the Last Days
Chapter 602 - 600: Mutant Insect
CHAPTER 602: CHAPTER 600: MUTANT INSECT
The turbid nutrient solution had already leaked out by more than half, and the thing nestled inside began to move.
Su Mo took a few steps back, frowning, "This thing is still alive."
"Splash!"
While they were unharmed, another glass container embedded in the opposite corridor also shattered.
Lu Chen immediately used his superpower to ice seal the container in front of him and rushed over with Su Mo.
Numerous legs crawled on the ground, the sharp limbs producing a metallic friction sound on the floor.
There were about ten superpower users with them, and someone using the light of a flashlight quickly spotted a gigantic centipede on the ground, moving awkwardly like a newborn learning to walk.
"Open fire, open fire!"
Someone shouted, and those with guns quickly drew them and fired several shots at the creature.
The loud noise from the gunfire attracted the attention of dozens of mutated bees in the withered botanical garden behind the glass below.
"Bullets are useless! Use your superpowers, use your superpowers!"
The monstrous giant centipede, having just learned to walk, snapped its mandible-like pincers open and closed, as if expressing its anger while charging towards them.
The diverse array of superpowers stopped its advance. Dirt shot up from the ground, instantly entrapping its myriad legs, some people attacked its head with Fire Powers, and others bound its body with vines.
There was no need for Su Mo and others to act. Under the attack of those ten superpower users, the enormous mutated centipede fell to the ground.
But that was not the end, the previous gunshot had drawn the attention of the creatures below, so everyone had to face the swarm of mutant bees taking flight and other bizarre creatures they couldn’t even name.
It was like a mixed bag of insects, separated from them by only a fragile layer of glass.
These creatures seemed starved, the frenzied fury in their compound eyes taking everyone’s breath away, making them all step back.
At some point, the sound of hail falling from the sky above had also disappeared.
"It’s too dark here, they can’t fend off so many mutated insects with just flashlights," Su Mo said as he looked back at the stairs leading upward.
He spoke softly, "Jianxiong, go and get the door reopened."
Jianxiong grabbed Li He’s arm and ran upstairs.
"Everyone get up there," Lu Chen told the others.
Everyone ran upstairs, leaving only Lu Chen and Su Mo behind.
The fragile glass was covered by cold ice charged with power, created by Lu Chen.
The insects on the other side were already restless, ready to strike.
Although the glass was reinforced with energy, soon the stingers of the mutant bees pierced through it, and cracks rapidly spread across the surface. Su Mo couldn’t help but turn and ask, "Is it done yet? They’re about to break through!"
Jianxiong and two Power Superpower Users were desperately pushing against the iron door with their shoulders, but a huge hailstone weighed it down, preventing them from immediately forcing a way through.
The cracks in the glass grew larger, and finally, one pane could no longer bear the weight and began to collapse.
A large number of flying insects penetrated right into the passageway.
Mutant honeybees, moths, centipedes...
Just imagine what it would feel like to have all of these creatures enlarged dozens of times right before your eyes?
Su Mo felt the goosebumps rising on her skin as she quickly drew her Tang Blade and cleaved through a bee that tried to infect her with its stinger. She promptly followed Lu Chen in running backwards.
Jianxiong maximized his energy capacity and forcefully pushed aside the gigantic hailstone.
Once light appeared again within their sight, everyone rushed towards it, but the scene that came into view was still shocking.
The ground was covered with chunks of ice, and the entire Insect Museum building had collapsed.
When Su Mo burst out, she too was shocked by the ruins in front of her.
But they didn’t have much time to consider it as the swarm of mutant monsters behind them didn’t even wait for Jianxiong to bring a large rock to cover their retreat before they all poured out.
The dense fog had now dispersed, and everyone exerted their energy to run along the mountain path ahead. The number of these insects was terrifyingly large. Su Mo even suspected that these creatures, after mutating, were still able to reproduce because their numbers were so dense it made one’s skin crawl just looking at them.
Occasionally, Lu Chen would shoot out ice crystals behind him in an attempt to stop the strange insects.
After they crossed the bizarre road surface covered with vines, the car was thrown back into the fray, and everyone scrambled into the vehicle without any direction.
The bees’ stingers didn’t hesitate to pierce through the car’s windows and the windshield. Several cars zoomed along the road, gas pedals floored.
Su Mo climbed out through a hole in the roof of the car, her Tang Blade effortlessly slicing down two bees trying to pierce through from the top.
On another car behind, the Fire Ability User used all his strength to gather a massive wall of fire, which barely held back some of the mutant insects.
The road was very difficult to navigate, littered with massive hailstones. The sky began to darken little by little, but Lu Chen didn’t choose to stop and rest there. He slowly made his way through the night, until they reached a hailstone so large it cut across the entire road, forcing him to stop.
Once they had escaped the pursuit of those disgusting insects and got out of the car, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
The falling night caused the temperature to drop to a very low level; Su Mo’s breath turned to a white mist in the air even with a single breath from her mouth.
She couldn’t help but rub her hands together, "We should sleep in the car with the heater on tonight; otherwise, we will freeze to death."
Lu Chen said, "Eat first."
Jianxiong brought over many dry branches to set up a pot, and Su Mo cooked a pot of soup. Everyone gathered around the fire to eat a warm meal, feeling much more comfortable.
Lu Chen took out a piece of paper, examined it closely by the firelight, then put it away, "We will be able to reach Luohe by tomorrow."
"I hope the bunker there won’t disappoint us," Su Mo said, looking at the giant hailstone still standing nearby, her expression helpless, "These omens have come too quickly. I’m a bit worried about the refugee camp."
Lu Chen’s expression darkened as well, "Jin Han and Feng Yao are there, Rong Bai should be able to handle it."
This ice storm that lasted for hours killed a large number of people in the refugee camp.
When Zhao Changsheng and the others returned to P City without incident by driving their cars as fast as possible, several gigantic hailstones smashed into the camp, crushing the bones of dozens of people underneath.
No one had the time to mourn because the recently repaired walls were smashed again. To prevent an invasion of zombies, they had to put aside their grief and do their utmost to repair the wall, which now had many holes in it.
