CHAPTER 61: CHAPTER 61: GRANDPA AND GRANDMA ON FATHER’S SIDE

"Oh, how come you’ve brought back so much of this stuff?" Ms. Wang asked with a smile. The two siblings left the house early in the morning, and they moved so quickly that Ms. Wang didn’t even have a chance to ask where they were going. Now, it seemed that they had gone to gather these things.

However, something crossed her mind and her face suddenly darkened, "Where did you find these?"

Seeing the sudden change in Ms. Wang’s expression, Yang Qingrui understood that his mother was worried, so he explained, "Mom, we found them on the little beach, no one cares about that place."

Hearing him say this, Ms. Wang relaxed.

"Xiaxia, why did you bring back so much of this stuff? Little crabs have no meat, it’s all shell. Cooking them would be a waste of oil."

Ms. Wang rummaged through one of the small buckets and found that it was mostly filled with small crabs, along with some small shrimp and shells.

"Mother, who said these were for stir-frying? I have my uses for them. When dad comes back, you’ll see." Yang Chuxia took out the wooden basin used for washing rice at home, but found it was too small to wash the tiny crabs,

"We don’t have a big basin in our house," Ms. Wang said, realising what her daughter wanted to do.

"Does anyone else have one I could borrow?" asked Yang Chuxia. She will have to borrow one, since there is no big basin in the Yang family home.

"Your Grandpa Land Officer has one!"

No sooner had Ms. Wang finished speaking than Yang Chuxia said, "I’ll go borrow it." As she spoke, she picked four big crabs from what she had collected in the morning and placed them in a small basket.

Then she took 500 copper coins from where they kept their money. Seeing Ms. Wang watching her, she said, "Didn’t dad and I open a new field yesterday? I’ll take the money to Grandpa Land Officer to get a deed for the land, so no one can seize it."

Hearing this, Ms. Wang affectionately laughed, "You are such a smart girl."

Yang Chuxia giggled a couple of times and left with her little basket.

The Land Officer’s home was in the center of the village, a few blue brick houses with a large courtyard that contained both east and west rooms. It looked quite grand.

She couldn’t help envying such a living environment. Summers by the sea are humid, hot, and sticky. Because it’s near the sea, the sea breeze carries salt which can make people feel very uncomfortable when it lands on their skin.

Particularly, if you are living in a mud house like Yang family’s, it’s even more uncomfortable. It’s just bearable when it’s not raining, but if it drizzles, the humidity and stuffiness can drive people crazy in minutes.

But if you have a brick house like this, it would be much better. At least, it keeps the home dry when it’s raining.

As Yang Chuxia was admiring the house, the Land Officer’s wife happened to come out. Seeing Yang Chuxia standing outside, she laughed,

"Oh, it’s Xiaxia. Why are you standing at the door, why don’t you come in?"

"Granny Yang, is the Grandpa Land Officer home?"

"Yes, he is. Come in with me." As she spoke, Land Officer’s wife led Yang Chuxia in by the hand. After walking a few steps, she turned back and laughed, "You sure do know how to address people properly. By rights, you should call me your Great Auntie, not Granny Yang. It sounds very strange."

"My wife is right, you girl. I am your father’s biological cousin. You should call me Great Uncle, not Land Officer. Unless you want to make me feel distant." Hearing his wife’s words, Land Officer Yang laughed and came out from the house.`

Yang Chuxia chuckled a bit and instantly corrected herself, "Great Uncle, Great Auntie, don’t blame me for this, I just found out you guys are my great uncle and auntie."
