CHAPTER 51: 51: COLD AND RECKLESS (PART 3) _1
Kaoshan Village, Liang family.
"She has been unconscious for three days, why hasn’t she woken up yet?"
On this day, the weather in the mountains started to warm up.
Yixuan had made a pot of cornmeal porridge, and there was a small stool in front of the stove; he was sitting on the stool, tending the fire.
Next to him, Yue Ning was vigorously scrubbing clothes, but seemed distracted.
In the past, any matter concerning Dong Huiying would have certainly ruffled his feathers, but now, he couldn’t help thinking of that painful beating with ninety strokes...
In the past few days, Dong Huiying had been seriously injured and unconscious. With no money at home, they had no choice but to bring her back to Kaoshan Village to recuperate. But every day, Yixuan personally fed her some liquid food, which she swallowed unconsciously, and Yue Ning had also helped Yixuan change Dong Huiying’s dressings.
The wounds were bloody and appalling; they were almost mashed.
Yue Ning felt a stir of compassion in his heart and began to reflect. Had his attitude toward Dong Huiying in the previous days been too abominable? But she hadn’t held it against him; instead, she had toiled for the family concerning the matter of Yixuan, sustaining injuries all over her body...
After Yue Ning finished washing the clothes, he glanced at the sky, saw that it was about time, and so he carried a basin of warm water into the east room.
He looked at Dong Huiying on the kang, who, to avoid pressing on her wounds, was made to lie face down on the mattress by the brothers.
She wore only a thin garment with an old quilt draped over her.
Yue Ning lifted the quilt and saw that her wound had started to scab over.
He frowned, and then, somewhat clumsily, wiped her wound with the wet towel and sprinkled some healing powder over it.
"Ugh..." Dong Huiying awoke. She had slept for too long and was somewhat muddled.
Before her consciousness fully returned, she felt a hand moving...?
Startled into a panic!
A lecher? A flower thief? Or... She was so frightened that she became instantly alert.
Immediately, she flipped over like lightning, and her little black hoof kicked out at the other person.
Yue Ning grunted. Her strength was too great, her little foot nearly broke his bones, sending him flying.
Yue Ning’s body crashed heavily into the wooden door with a ’bang’, almost shattering the door frame.
"Fifth Brother?" Hearing the loud noise, Yixuan hurried over. But since he was lame, his progress was too slow. Anxiously, he stumbled, nearly falling headfirst to the ground.
Yue Ning, covered in dust, struggled to his feet, then, holding his painfully kicked chest, glared at Dong Huiying on the kang.
"Dong Dabao, are you sick or something?"
It was truly good intentions not being rewarded, but luckily it was him she kicked, and not Yixuan. Since Yixuan wasn’t rugged, he could have been seriously injured.
Dong Huiying’s kick had been swift, but the large motion had torn open her already scabbed wound, causing her such pain that she bared her teeth and grimaced.
She snatched up the quilt and pulled it over herself.
She felt embarrassed, annoyed, and somewhat awkward.
"I’m not sick, I just... I just got a little scared."
"Scared?"
Yue Ning was taken aback, then he understood. She must have mistaken him for a lecher, thinking he was taking liberties with her. He was furious.
"Consider it none of my business." He flung his sleeve and left the room angrily, slamming the door behind him.
If it hadn’t been for her severe injuries and his fear that her wounds would fester, he wouldn’t have bothered with her at all.
As for taking liberties?
He wouldn’t assault a ghost, much less Dong Dabao with her ugly face, looking like a total clown, skinny as a rail with hardly any flesh on her bones, and dark-skinned.
He wasn’t out of his mind; how could he possibly ’assault’ something so unattractive?
Yixuan glanced at Dong Huiying, then turned to look back at the irate Fifth Brother leaving the room, his lips suddenly twitching slightly.
Dong Huiying, looking like a small quail, clutched the quilt. Even with a dark face, she couldn’t hide her extreme embarrassment; her entire little face scorched red with heat...
