Chapter 552: Chapter 552: Benedict Beast Swings Its Tail, System Draws Randomly
Night falls on the Jennings Family estate.
Adam Jennings sits on the sofa in Lucas Jennings’ room, watching him climb into bed, ready to sleep, and can’t help saying,
“You’re just going to sleep?”
Lucas turns his head to look at Adam, “What else?”
Seeing Adam staring at him, Lucas simply sits on the bed and says,
“My sister already said she’d help you catch that thief, don’t worry. But bro, are you really planning to sleep with me tonight?”
“What else?” Adam glances at him.
Originally thinking it was just some insider thief, he wasn’t worried about sleeping inside even if that’s the case.
But knowing there’s something strange in the house, he no longer dared to take the risk.
Although he could just sleep in any guest room, he felt that nowhere seemed as safe as Scarlett Jennings’ room.
Sadly, Scarlett is a girl; otherwise, he would squeeze into her room even if it meant sleeping on the floor.
Staying with Lucas is a second-best choice.
After all, Lucas’ room is directly below Scarlett’s. If something really happens, she’d sense it too.
Hearing Adam’s self-righteous tone, Lucas lies down and pulls up the covers, still muttering,
“You have other brothers, your brother’s on the third floor, yet you insist on squeezing in with me…”
Adam throws him a sideways glance,
“Why do you talk so much?”
Lucas pouts, lightly hums, “Taking up my room and complaining I talk too much. Lights off!”
The voice-activated lights in the room turn off in response, and the room instantly plunges into darkness.
After just a second, Adam turns them back on again.
“I’m not asleep yet, why turn off the light, leave it on.”
Lucas almost laughs in exasperation at his words, just about to sit up to scold him when Adam, self-absorbed, asks,
“Is Scarlett asleep too? Should we send her a message telling her not to sleep too deeply tonight?”
Lucas: …
“Brother Adam, trust me, if you dare message her to stay awake, not only will you be permanently blocked, but she won’t help you with the thief issue either.”
Lucas spoke with certainty.
Being Scarlett’s little lackey, Lucas surely understands Scarlett better than anyone. Since he said so, Adam… had no choice but to give up this idea.
…
Three in the morning.
Adam and Lucas are bundled together in sleep.
The entire villa is enveloped in silence, but if you listen closely, there’s a faint noise of something moving on the exterior wall outside the window.
Outside the wall.
The system turtle is laboriously moving up the wall cavity with its limbs.
Having been commanding this body, it’s been crawling for over six hours.
Thankfully, it’s almost there.
The system’s target is the window ledge of Adam Jennings’ room.
It wasn’t until Adam poked it today that it learned Scarlett Jennings had given that Benedict Jade to this fool Adam.
During the days it was inside Azura Loomis’ body, it had interacted with Adam Jennings quite a bit.
In the system’s view, Adam is just an easily tricked fool.
Yet this fool gets such a prized thing from Scarlett Jennings.
That’s a waste!
Rather than letting such a fool waste it, it figured it might as well secretly take it for itself.
With this thought, the system finally perseveres and climbs to the window ledge of Adam’s room.
Luckily, one of the windows in Adam’s room is open.
The system labors its way over, and as it stretches its head, ready to squeeze through the window gap, unexpectedly it senses a familiar and longed-for aura.
Moreover, the aura is very close!
The system excitedly moves its limbs, and with difficulty, the whole turtle squeezes through the window, feeling that the aura, initially some distance away, suddenly becomes within reach.
The system turtle’s head freezes, instinctively looks up, and sees a completely green Benedict Jade looking down at it.
Its appearance, surprisingly lifelike.
The system turtle instantly widens its mouth, just about to say something, when the Benedict Jade suddenly turns around, and the jade tail fiercely strikes the system turtle’s head with a loud smack.
Clearly a jade item, yet its force is not slight.
The system only feels the whole turtle being knocked flying, instinctively retracting into its shell.
The turtle shell spins twice in the air, then falls into the bushes below with a thud, silent thereafter.
…
Forced into silence, the system.
Upstairs, Scarlett Jennings, originally in deep sleep, abruptly opens her eyes the moment the Benedict Jade makes its move.
Her almond eyes filled with clarity; she then unhesitatingly gets out of bed, running downstairs while forming a mantra with both hands,
“Heaven and earth supreme, encompassing all, four directions spirit evil, none dare escape… Bind!”
The Spirit Light Rune Chains are faster than her movements, darting towards Adam’s room.
It slips through the gap in the door and quickly locks onto its target.
Binds.
Noticing the Binding Spirit Chain catching something, Scarlett Jenkins is swiftly swept along by a breeze, arriving quickly outside Adam’s room.
Hearing the commotion, both Adam and Lucas awaken with a start, rushing to the door.
Upon reaching Adam’s room, they see the door wide open.
Scarlett stands motionless at the doorway.
Meanwhile, both of them notice the sounds of struggling inside the room, hastily signaling to turn on the light.
With a snap, the light blazes brightly.
When they finally see the scene inside, both Lucas and Adam are stunned.
“This…”
“This, is the thief who stole the jade?”
At the doorway, Adam looks at the little creature bound by rune chains, his expression difficult to describe,
“Why do I find it so familiar?”
Lucas says, “Of course, it’s familiar! It’s the thief who secretly lived in my sister’s new house!”
Inside, bound by the rune chains is none other than the Ear Mouse itself.
Being familiar with the chains binding it, it gives up struggling, mewling toward Scarlett,
“Master, I’m Braxton Weaver, I came to find you, sob sob sob…”
Braxton hadn’t assumed human form; he speaks directly as a beast.
This voice instantly shocks the two at the entrance once more.
“Oh my god! Where’s this uncle’s voice coming from?!”
Lucas hides behind Scarlett, nervously glancing around inside the room.
Although they already knew this Ear Mouse was a demon, they hadn’t heard it speak before.
Listening to a somewhat cute big-eared flying squirrel emit an uncle’s voice, Lucas had to admit he was quite startled.
Adam is equally startled but quickly recovers, pointing at the bound Ear Mouse, questioning,
“It’s you who’s been stealing my jade materials every night?!”
Braxton hears Adam’s accusation, instantly shouting,
“I didn’t steal your stuff!”
Then turning to Scarlett, mewling tearfully, “Master, I really didn’t steal anything, you know, I’m not that kind of demon!”
Seeing it was Braxton bound inside, Scarlett knew she caught the wrong one.
Even though she knew, she didn’t immediately withdraw the chain, only asked,
“Why did you run here?”
Saying this, her eyes slightly narrowing,
“You didn’t turn yourself in as suggested earlier?”
Seeing Scarlett’s dangerous gaze, Braxton quickly shivers, hastily speaks,
“I did, I did! But the Mystic Regulation Office lectured me, fined me, then released me. I came specifically to find you, Master!”
Braxton, afraid she wouldn’t believe him, suddenly extends his long tail, presenting something to Scarlett.
The fluffy tail gently unfolds, revealing several pieces of currency of different values wrapped inside.
“This is the money I promised to compensate you with.”
