Back then, Jules had shown the samemitment to being by her side.
Her silence and steady gaze caused a flicker of worry in Jules. He blurted out, “What the hell! Has all that sleep left you spaced out?”
He leaned closer, waving his hand before her eyes. “Do you recognize me?”
“You look ridiculous right now, you know?” Corrine flicked his hand away, her eyes rolling yfully.
“Okay, your mind’s still sharp.” Jules let out a sigh of relief. He noticed her attempting to get up and quickly offered his support. “Feeling any better?”
Somewhat feeble from the long rest, Corrine leaned against the headboard. “How long was I out?”
“Over twenty-four hours.”
Worried that Nate might have uncovered their secret, Corrine frowned slightly. Jules handed her a ss of warm water, saying, “Drink this, and I’ll get some food ready.”
He noticed her distracted look and added, in a calm tone, “Rx. Nate doesn’t know anything.”
Relieved, Corrine exhaled deeply.
At that moment, her phone buzzed. Nate was on the line.
After a brief pause, she answered.
In a subdued voice, Nate asked, “Is your taskpleted?”
Corrine hesitated, pondering whether Jules had concocted an excuse for her absence, then decided to go along with it. “I’m still tied up and won’t make it home tonight.”
There was a short silence, followed by a dry chuckle on the other end. “So we get engaged, and now you’re trying to stay away from me already?”
Corrine froze, unsure of how to respond the moment she heard what was said. She had concocted an excuse to postpone her return to Celtis Estate, fearing that her appearance might betray her secrets if she did.
The severity in Nate’s words caught her off guard.
Sensing Nate’s anger, she responded in a softer tone, trying to reassure him. “I’m not trying to stay away from you. I’m tied up at the moment, but I promise we’ll find time soon, okay?”
Following a lengthy silence, Nate finally replied in a subdued tone over the phone, “Okay.”
“I’m going to hang up now,” she said, afraid that if she kept talking, she might slip. “I’ll reach out once I have the chance.”
Once the call ended, she reclined against the headboard and shifted her focus to the window.
Shortly thereafter, Jules came in, offering a cup of milk. “You’ve just woken up, so I asked the kitchen to prepare this for you.”
Corrine acknowledged with a nod. “How’s Grandpa?”
“He’s resting in his room,” Jules answered. “He was here all night with you.” Carl was no longer young, and his health hadn’t been the best in years. Even one sleepless night was rough on him. Still, he refused to leave Corrine alone until he saw her awake.
Thankfully, Jules and Lnd were able to convince him to step away for a while. He hadn’t agreed easily.
