CHAPTER 79: CHAPTER 79: JUST DOING MY JOB
It looks like charred mud, but Wuming struggled to understand—they wanted food; is it possible to eat a piece of charred mud?
"Inside there is Beggar’s Chicken; just crack open the outer layer of mud, and you’ll see the chicken inside," Gu Nian explained with a smile, not forgetting to remind, "Oh, I filled the chicken’s belly with mushroom rice; hope it suits your taste."
Nan Jin Yu heard that voice again, youthful and cheerful, able to penetrate the heart and stir his originally calm mind.
"Wuxin, let her in."
Nan Jin Yu didn’t even turn his head, but Wuxin could accurately guess who he meant by "her."
"Young lady, my master invites you in; perhaps you’ll have to personally explain to us how to eat this Beggar’s Chicken?" Wuxin said.
Gu Nian had explained quite clearly earlier, but since Nan Jin Yu had spoken, Wuxin had no choice but to comply.
Gu Nian wasn’t afraid of people and went straight ahead, cheerfully saying, "Alright then."
Wuming quickly stepped aside, and Wuxin made a gesture of invitation, allowing Gu Nian to enter.
Walking calmly to the stone table, Gu Nian looked at the Beggar’s Chicken turned into black charcoal, and hesitantly asked, "Is there a hammer?"
Feeling quite awkward, she forgot to mention the hammer when she brought it over, which was essential to break it open.
Gu Nian thought, at home, she’d just grab a random stone to smash it open.
But in front of the patron, fearing they might frown upon such an unsophisticated method, she opted for a more peaceful approach!
The three had just moved in the afternoon, and indeed, less common items like a hammer weren’t prepared.
Nan Jin Yu tapped his fingers incessantly on the table, appearing leisurely while looking at Gu Nian’s face with a slight smile playing on his lips.
Wuxin quickly stepped forward, "Young lady, just tell me what needs to be done."
The master merely wanted an excuse to see the girl; indeed, nobody expected a six-year-old to accomplish anything.
Gu Nian had no choice but to say, "Just crack open the outer layer of mud, keeping your strength light so as not to smash the chicken meat inside."
Wuxin nodded, directly reaching out and touching the mud, which instantly fell away, revealing a layer of lotus leaf wrapping the chicken inside.
"Unwrap the lotus leaf, and inside is the fully cooked chicken; you can choose to slice or tear it apart, along with the rice inside the chicken, infused with the chicken’s aroma—probably tastes pretty good."
Though Gu Nian spoke nonchalantly, inwardly she was extremely proud.
She was confident in her cooking skills.
As Gu Nian finished speaking, Wuxin pulled out a dagger from unknown whereabouts, and with swift motions, sliced the chicken into pieces, exposing the rice mixed with mushroom bits inside.
Nan Jin Yu calmly picked up chopsticks, bypassing the chicken, and ate a bite of the rice.
Gu Nian raised her head to look at him for the first time; the youth’s face looked cool while gracefully eating, with slightly raised eyebrows, indicating his good mood.
It seemed the rice suited his taste.
Nan Jin Yu took a few more bites of the other dishes, finally placing down his cutlery, generously praising, "The culinary skills are remarkable; the dishes are crafted with care, hard to believe that an ordinary farm could produce such meals."
Based on his investigation, most families couldn’t even afford meat, let alone put effort into making such things.
Gu Nian felt a jolt in her heart and said, "We are just here doing our job; as long as the dishes meet your satisfaction, we can be at ease."
