Vanessa grinned, seeming well aware of what Nathan was thinking. “Mr. Powell, you know what? I used to cherish what we had before. After all, we’re a married couple who grew up together. But now? Not anymore. I’m no longer interested in you. Now, please get off before the elevator rm goes off.”
“Vanessa, you…” Nathan’s expression darkened even more as he suddenly pulled her out of the elevator by her arm.
She didn’t even struggle.
Instead, she just smiled in a devil-may-care manner, “Mr. Powell, Ms. Berger’s ward is on this floor. What if she sees us like this? Aren’t you afraid of upsetting her?”
Looking at the casual smile on her face, Nathan pursed his lips.
Then he said seriously, “Vanessa, Suzy grew up without her birth parents, and life’s always been tough for her. That’s why she’s so insecure and sensitive. We should be more understanding and patient with her, don’t you think? Deep down, she’s good-hearted. I hope you’ll stop making things hard for her from now on. Besides… Remember what you said to me when we were kids? You wanted me to be kind to her. That means you felt sorry for her, too, right?”
It was the first time he had taken the initiative to bring Susanna up in front of Vanessa,
His words instantly dragged Vanessa back to those hurtful memories, and she was seething with rage.
The first time she brought Susanna to meet Nathan, he had barely nced at Susanna before looking away with an in- different frown. Clearly, he didn’t like Susanna at all.
Susanna had been so sad that she kept crying miserably.
It had broken Vanessa’s heart. She had pulled him aside, saying seriously, “Susanna is pitiful enough without her birth parents. To me, she’s like a sister. Be nice to her,”
Only then did he start to treat Susanna better.
Now that Nathan had dredged this up, Vanessa felt her own past kindness like a sharp p in her face. How bitterly
ironic.
“You came to me just to say this to me, Mr. Powell?” The smile on her lips didn’t reach her eyes, which were terrify- ingly icy.
Meeting her indifferent gaze, Nathan was stunned for a second. He was actually at a loss for words.
“Alright then. I heard you. Thanks for the reminder. I’ll be leaving now,” she said coldly before heading back to the elevator.
“Vanessa…” By the time he reacted and wanted to follow her, the elevator doors had already closed.

As the elevator numbers ticked downward, he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, looking lost and uneasy. Then he reached for a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, took a few deep drags, stubbed it out, and finally took out his phone.
“Steve, have you found out who spiked my drink that night?”
On the night of Valentine’s Day, someone had drugged his wine, turning him into a ruthless, horrible beast…
For days now, he had been wing through his memories of that night. But his mind remained a perfect nk, and he wasn’t even sure if he had slept with Susanna or not. One thing was certain, though-someone had spiked hisst
drink.
That night had shattered Vanessa-ever since that, she had obviously changed a lot. He had actually seen disgust in her eyes when she looked at him.
How dare she! She didn’t deserve to despise him!
Steve replied, “Not yet, Mr. Powell. I’m sorry. The hotel’s surveince system was down that night.”
