Staring at Vanessa’s cold, retreating figure, Nathan pulled a long face.

He thought while gritting his teeth, “Vanessa, do you really think I need you to know the truth? Not at all! I have plenty of ways to find out.

“I just don’t believe for a second that you’re skilled enough to perform on Mr. Barnard.

“I’m so fed up with your arrogance. Who the heck do you think you are?”

Furious, he yanked the door open and went upstairs with a frown.

Vanessa sat next to Madeline during dinner, and the atmosphere was tranquil and harmonious.

“Nathan, is it true? Mr. Barnard had a heart attack and is in town for treatment?” yton asked right after dinner, his concern for the Brentford Project evident.

“Why don’t you ask Vanessa? She knows better than I do,” Nathan said indifferently after ncing at Vanessa.

She was secretly surprised.

The name “Mr. Barnard” had turned up several times sincest night.

Throughout her entire career, she focused single-mindedly on saving lives. Her patients’ identities had never been her

concern.

So, she really had no idea if that VIP patient was Kurt.

But she had to answer yton’s question for now.

“yton, it’s true-Mr. Barron called me the night beforest, asking me to operate on a patient from Haverfield with a heart attack. But I don’t know who he is or what he does,” she exined, carefully choosing her words.

Madeline immediately chimed in, “yton, Vanny is a doctor. How’s she supposed to know anything about business? Even if she did operate on Mr. Barnard, what’s wrong with that? It’s her job. Besides, doctors have professional ethics. They can’t disclose patient information. Stop grilling her.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry, Vanny,” yton smiled before changing the subject.

Madeline continued solemnly, “I’ve asked around, and everyone agrees Mr. Barnard is a man of integrity, fairness, and principle. Whether he’s in town or not doesn’t matter. If we prove our capabilities, he’ll recognize our merit. Right now, we should focus on our priority-strengthening our business and preparing to bid for the project. When bidding dayes. I’m sure we’ll get a fair shot.”

“Yes, Grandma. I totally agree. That’s why I’ve been working on the preparation these days,” Nathan said with confi- dence and aloofness in his eyes.

Madeline nodded. “Good. But remember-never underestimate our opponent. Evander is always unpredictable, and he’s definitely our biggest threat.”

Casey pulled Vanessa aside after the meeting and whispered, “Vanny, you’re part of the Powell family. And Madeline has already promised you half thepany shares. It’s your responsibility to contribute-you can’t just sit back and do nothing, alright?”

Years in the business world had taught Casey one thing-connections mattered. They were, in fact, the lifeblood of pretty much all business projects.

Madeline doted on Vanessa and didn’t want her to get involved, but Casey couldn’t stand by and do nothing.

Knowing what she was implying. Vanessa smiled bitterly, “Casey, rest assured. I’ll help if I can.”

“Alright. Now, get inside. You’ll stay here with Nathan tonight,” Casey smiled while nodding before pushing Vanessa into the bedroom. “Don’t sneak out in the middle of the night again, OK?”

Hearing this, Vanessa was stunned. Did Casey know she had climbed out that night?

But she had already called Madeline the next morning to exin that it was due to a surgery.

While she was in a daze, Nathan was pushed into the room, too.

Vanessa looked at Nathan helplessly. “Why don’t youe up with a solution? We can’t go on like this forever.”

Nathan’s expression darkened as he tugged at the tie on his chest. “It’s gettingte. Go wash up and get some rest. You take the bed tonight, I’ll sleep on the sofa. We’ll talk about this another time.”

“Alright.” Vanessa had no other choice; she was exhausted and only wanted a good night’s sleep. She nced back at the bed, yawned, and went to take a shower.

Nathan pulled off his tie and tossed it onto the nearby sofa. He sat down, checked his watch, and opened hisptop to get back to work.

When Vanessa came out after her shower, she saw Nathan buried in his work, not even ncing at her.

She feltpletely at case with him.

A man who disliked and resented her so much would never try to take advantage of her,

“You keep working, I’m going to sleep.”

“Mm, good night.”

Vanessa yawned and sprawled out on the big bed. Not bad, it was quitefortable!

She rolled over, closed her eyes, thinking she’d fall asleep quickly. Strangely, though she was exhausted, she couldn’t

drift off.

Suddenly, an image of a man’s strong body shed through her mind-broad shoulders, narrow waist, sharply defined abs, powerful arms. When he held her, she could feel the full force of his masculine strength.

On Valentine’s night, he kissed every inch of her skin, his hard, vigorous strength… All she could see were stars, daz- zling and bright.

Suddenly, she felt hot all over, a blush spreading across her cheeks.

Suddenly, Nathan’s phone started ringing.

She curled her lips. No need to guess-it had to be Susanna calling!

Thinking of her lying alone in the hospital, that cold loneliness was more than most women could bear.

This must be the sorrow of being the other woman!

“Vanessa, Susanna’s wound is infected and bleeding badly. She’s already passed out. I have to go check on her.”

Vanessa was stunned.

It was just aparoscopic surgery, and it was already the third day. Could she really have fainted?

Most likely, the white lotus was pretending to faint to get Nathan to take care of her!

“Alright, go ahead and take good care of her,” she repliedzily.

Nathan began packing up hisptop, straightening his tie, and putting on his suit.

Soon, he went to push open the bedroom door.

“You brat, where are you going at this hour?” Just as he pushed a few times, Madeline Powell’s authoritative voice came from outside.

Vanessa was utterly shocked. Madeline was actually standing guard outside herself. She really was putting in the ef- fort. Vanessa didn’t know whether tough or cry!

“Grandma, Susanna had surgery and her wound isn’t healing well. She’s running a high fever and has fainted.” Nathan was helpless and could only exin patiently.

“Even if she dies, it’s none of your business. You’re not her anything. The most important person for you right now is Vanessa, understand? Besides, you’re not a doctor. What use is it for you to go?” Madeline’s face was stern as she scolded him.

“But Grandma, Susanna got sick because of me. As a man, I have a responsibility to take care of her. Susanna is an orphan, she has no family, only me. She’s so pitiful.” Nathan was determined to leave, arguing his case.

“Hmph.” Madeline snorted coldly. “She knew you had a family and still ruined it. That woman deserves what she gets. Nathan, who are you doing right by? Are you being fair to Vanessa?”

The two were at a stalemate.
