The Mute Wife Who Brings Prosperity
Chapter 59 - 58: It Hurts, It Hurts So Much
CHAPTER 59: CHAPTER 58: IT HURTS, IT HURTS SO MUCH
When caught by his mother, Old Song was subjected to a round of questioning. Song Wei did not show the slightest impatience, answering Granny Song’s questions slowly, one by one.
Hearing that her son smoothly entered the examination hall and returned after the test, Granny Song couldn’t quite believe it, "Really? You’re not just trying to make your mother happy, are you?"
Song Wei was about to speak when Old Song’s voice came from inside, "No matter how much nagging there is, you should let the Third Son into the house for a drink of water to catch his breath before speaking. Is this how you interrogate your own son, blocking the door?"
"You talk too much!" Granny Song retorted, then cheerfully turned to Song Wei, "Third Son, come inside quickly. Fangniang has already prepared the meal, just waiting for you to sit down at the table!"
Speaking of cooking, Song Wei remembered the promise he made to Xie Tao on the road, and quickly said, "Mother, I just asked Xie Tao to go home to invite Uncle and Auntie over for dinner, so let’s add a few more hearty dishes!"
As he spoke, he handed the fish and pork they bought from the county town to Granny Song.
"It’s rare that after all these years of effort, you’ve finally entered the examination hall smoothly. Inviting their family for a meal is only right." Granny Song took the items and turned to head to the kitchen.
Wen Wan rolled up her sleeves, intending to help.
"Wanwan."
Song Wei called softly, but before he could say more, Granny Song interrupted, glancing at Wen Wan, "With the two of us in the kitchen, Wan Niang doesn’t need to come and wear herself out. Otherwise, the Third Son would blame me, as his mother, for not knowing how to care for people."
Seeing Wen Wan standing still, Granny Song threw her a glance, "Do you need me, as your mother-in-law, to personally invite you?"
Unable to resist, Wen Wan followed Song Wei into the house.
Song Fang quickly brewed hot tea, poured a cup for each of her brother and sister-in-law, and then went to the kitchen to help.
Before long, people from Aunt Xie’s family arrived. Aunt Xie originally wanted to help Granny Song but seeing Wen Wan sitting in the main room, decided to stay back and sent her two daughters-in-law instead.
Actually, Aunt Xie and Wen Wan couldn’t communicate much, just wanting to avoid Wen Wan awkwardly sitting alone with a bunch of men. She chatted with her briefly and soon turned her attention to Song Wei.
Hearing that Song Wei really came out of the examination hall smoothly, Xie Zheng was happier than anyone, "I told you, Third Cousin really turned his luck around this time."
Aunt Xie was amazed, "Third Son, how is it that luck is so good for you this year?"
"Isn’t it obvious?" Xie Tao said with implied meaning as he glanced at Wen Wan, "It must be Third Sister-in-law bringing him good fortune!"
Aunt Xie didn’t believe this nonsense, but couldn’t argue in front of the couple, so she agreed, "That’s right, or how could the Third Son take his little wife to the exam?"
Song Wei knew they were just joking and didn’t truly believe Wanwan could change his luck. He gave a faint smile, not intending to explain.
Some secrets were meant to be kept between husband and wife.
Granny Song was in high spirits today, planning not to argue with the couple next door. She personally went to invite their family over for dinner, hoping to add some joy to the Third Son’s successful entry into the examination hall. Surprisingly, as she entered the courtyard, she saw the Second Lang’s wife with a face swollen like a pig’s head, lying weakly on a bench, groaning.
Granny Song was startled, "Oh my heavens, what happened to you?"
Seeing her mother-in-law arrive, Second Lang’s wife wanted to cry but couldn’t, stammering, "Mother, it hurts, it hurts so much."
Granny Song frowned, "Hurting won’t help with you whining to me. You should have asked your husband to get a doctor, what good will whining to me do? Can I stop your pain?"
"Second Lang just went out, who knows when he’ll be able to bring the doctor!"
Second Lang’s wife felt all wronged, blaming her mother’s silly idea. If it wasn’t for the fuss about creating trouble at the Song family, would she have been stung by a bee for no reason?
