CHAPTER 232: 211: THE SNAKE SKIN BAG DELIVERED BY SECRETARY LI
Jin Yunzhi pushed him twice, but the other’s strength was simply too overwhelming. Not only did she fail to create any distance, but she was held even tighter.
He wiped away a tear. "Who said I agreed to this?"
That bright red face, like a ripe tomato, seemed as if even the slightest pinch would leave a mark.
"I’ll take responsibility, I will," Xu Fan, lost in endless joy, kept repeating these words.
If it weren’t for the fact that so many people were watching, he probably would have already pinned the boy down for a barrage of kisses.
"Let go of me first..."
Jin Yunzhi, whose face was just as thin-skinned as always, became utterly flustered when he noticed the unmistakably suggestive glances from a few individuals nearby.
Yu Zhi inadvertently exchanged a two-second gaze with the boy, then curled her lips into a smile and leaned against the man’s chest.
She tugged lightly on the corner of his shirt. When he leaned in closer, she couldn’t help but whisper curiously, "Why aren’t you reacting?"
For two brothers who grew up together since childhood to end up in such a relationship, any normal person would find it shocking.
Yet the man’s expression remained unbothered, as if he were watching an utterly ordinary couple, completely unfazed.
"As expected," Shi Wei pinched the young lady’s cheek and pressed a kiss to her lips.
Only when facing her did that pair of dark, almond-shaped eyes hold a subtle glimmer of light.
Yu Zhi pursed her lips. "That’s true."
She could sense a certain peculiarity herself. Someone as clever as him must have known long ago.
"Alright, enough with the lovey-dovey act."
A single day of consuming endless doses of coupledom sweetness left Ruan Yuan feeling utterly overwhelmed.
She shook the dice cup in her hand. "Let’s play first."
The clear sound of dice clinking echoed throughout Meiyue Pavilion, and the blurred motion of the cup in her hand instantly captured the boy’s attention.
Seeing the person in his arms staring intently at someone else without fussing, Xu Fan didn’t press for an answer to his earlier question anymore.
After all, now that he had already caught his prize, there was no way to lose it.
As the red liquid from a wine bottle was poured into everyone’s cups on the table, the atmosphere became more lively than ever.
Occasional exclamations and bursts of melodic laughter emerged, as the group truly immersed themselves in the beauty of the night.
"Knock, knock, knock—"
The gentle tapping on the door briefly interrupted the merriment.
Jin Yunzhi instinctively stood up. His previous runs opening doors had formed a habit by now.
Before anyone could say anything, he walked over on his own.
"Excuse me, is Yu Zhi here?" A weary-faced Secretary Li flashed a formal smile at the young man.
He was lugging a large burlap sack. Messy black hair, topped with a few stray bits of grass, and pants mottled with traces of dirt completed his disheveled look.
Anyone unaware would think he had just returned from farming.
Jin Yunzhi blinked his grape-like eyes and had yet to process this haggard sight when a clear, bright voice sounded behind him.
"Uncle Li, what happened to you?" The girl’s eyes scanned him questioningly from top to bottom.
Secretary Li stepped in, and under the chandelier’s illumination, the dirt covering him became even more glaringly obvious.
"Made a trip to the mountain," he replied, pulling the corners of his mouth into a tired smile as he placed the sack at the girl’s feet. "Everything’s here."
His demeanor remained as steady as ever.
But under the dim light, his faintly trembling hands betrayed the turmoil he was trying to suppress.
"You went personally?" Yu Zhi raised a brow, her gaze moving from the sack to the table before pouring him a glass of water and handing it over.
"Yes." Secretary Li didn’t stand on ceremony and gulped down the glass of water.
Just as he was about to take a seat nearby, he caught sight of something squirming in the sack out of the corner of his eye and discretely shifted to another spot.
Xu Fan and Shi Yin had recognized Secretary Li at the first glance.
And seeing him now chatting amiably with the girl only made them even more astonished.
However, their polished manners prevented any overt displays of shock, though their gazes lingered on the pair.
Yu Zhi was more puzzled. "With so many trained subordinates under Old Man’s command, why send you?"
Sending a bookish man to catch a bunch of critters—the image itself was bizarre enough to imagine.
Secretary Li set down the glass and sat up straight. "Sir had already sent a few people up there this morning. I only followed to check things out because I was uneasy."
Looking back now, he was filled with deep regret.
No one knew how many times his stomach had churned or how many times he gagged at the sight of those densely wriggling creatures...
If he had known, he would’ve stayed obediently in the office.
Yu Zhi nodded knowingly. "No injuries, right?"
"None. Everyone was wearing protective gear."
"Good." If someone had gotten hurt, she’d probably have to make an entire batch of antidotes again.
Their "cryptic" conversation only intensified the curiosity of the others present. Their eyes frequently darted toward the burlap sack.
Jin Yunzhi was the first to give in. Once his curiosity was piqued, his courage grew alongside it.
He squatted beside the ugly sack, poking at it with a fingertip. "Sis, what’s inside—"
Before he could finish his sentence, the burlap sack jerked violently from side to side, as if whatever was tied inside were on the verge of bursting out.
Even someone as bold as Jin Yunzhi couldn’t handle such a sudden fright. He fell hard onto the cold floor.
"Yunzhi, does it hurt?" Xu Fan quickly helped the dazed boy up, frowning as his gaze shifted to the still writhing sack.
Jin Yunzhi shook his head. Having recovered from the scare, his eyes now glittered with excitement. "Sis, is it a rabbit inside?"
"No."
"Then... a fox?"
"Also no."
Yu Zhi kicked lightly at the creatures, waiting for them to quiet down before wrapping her fingers around the knot of the sack’s string. "Do you want to see?"
Jin Yunzhi didn’t take the seriousness on her face to heart, imagining a cute, fluffy animal appearing. "Yes!"
Secretary Li: "..."
Ah, youth and their naivety.
Yu Zhi sighed dramatically, then turned her gaze over her shoulder. "Shi Wei, bring me the red bottle from my bag."
Shi Wei raised an eyebrow, crouched beside her with the bottle in hand, and said in his low, gentle voice, "Careful."
"Mm," Yu Zhi answered softly, offering him a brilliant smile in return.
She uncapped the bottle and used the powder inside to draw a small circle on the floor, then slowly untied the knot securing the sack.
A continuous rustling sound reverberated through the previously quiet room. The intrigued group couldn’t help but inch closer, leaving only Secretary Li sitting firmly in place.
