“Isn’t that David from sophomore year in theputer science department?” someone whispered. “He’s a programming prodigy–won first prize in the codingpetition. Usually too arrogant to bother with others, but I guess Sloane really igot /iunder his skin.”

“Yeah,” another student added, “word is he’s fast and precise with his code. Even the professors

he’s a natural. Sloane’s in trouble this time.”

David took the seat across from Sloane at the otherputer.

Sloane, having noticed from the streamments that he specialized in algorithm programming, proposed theypete in that.

David sneered, finding her unbearably cocky. “Are you sure you want to do algorithm programming? Hope you don’t lose too badly–you might not be able to walk it off.”

He crossed his arms, his eyes full of condescension, already acting as if victory was in the bag.

But Sloane remained calm, her voice steady. “We won’t know until we try. Just don’t embarrass yourself itoo /imuch when you lose to a freshman.”

“Arrogant!” David’s face turned red with anger.

“Then we’ll serve as your judges.” Mr. Samson stepped forward from the crowd, followed by the entireputer science faculty–and several professors from other universities.

The hall instantly erupted with gasps. All eyes turned to the older professors behind him.

At the same time, the livestream chat exploded.

“Wait–isn’t that Ethan Lindt? He’s a giant in Al research! His algorithm project practically pushed the whole field forward!”

“Mr. Ethan’s got a sharp eye–this match is gonna be airtight with him judging!”

Another student chimed in, “That’s Jamal Spoon next to him! He’s huge in cybersecurity. His work made even top hackers think twice. With him judging, this is gonna be fair and square.”

Comments flooded the screen:

“Mr. Jamal’s here? This match just leveled up!”

“Is that Molly? The one whose research in distributed systems got picked up by half the Fortune 500?”

The chat was on fire:

“This judging panel is next–level!”

“Talk about overkill!”

From the crowd, someone shouted, “Mr. Samson, are you judging too?”

Mr. Samson sat off to the side and scoffed. “Since people think I helped Sloane cheat, I won’t be part of this. You’ll lose fair and square.”

He gestured toward the professors beside him. “I’m sure you all know who these people are. Their achievements inputer science speak for themselves. They’re more than qualified to oversee this match.”

Someone in the audience shouted again, “Mr. Samson, we’re not inputer science–can you tell us more about the judges?”

Mr. Samson’s expression didn’t change. “iIf /iyou don’t know, read the chat.”

And with that, he said no more.

Then Professor Molly–the youngest of the three–stood up. “The challenge for today’s algorithm programming match is aplex problembining graph theory and dynamic programming. The goal is ito /ioptimize routing inrge–scale logistics systems. Each contestant has one hour to write functioning code that passes all test cases.”

David’s lips curled in a smug smile as he read the prompt. A glint of confidence lit up his eyes.

He sat up straighter, fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced ease. Lines of code scrolled rapidly down his screen, and gasps of admiration rippled through the crowd as they watched his wless speed and execution.
