Sloane didn’t notice any change in Lucas. She leaned in slightly when she heard his question. “Of course I remember. What, is there something new?”

Lucas instinctively raised a hand to rub the back of his ear, his voice even calmer than before. “Yes. That friend of mine–he’s amander in the military district. He’d like to meet you.”

The smile on Sloane’s face froze the instant she heard the words mander in the military district.”

    Her expression turned serious.

She sat up straight, eyes locking onto Lucas, her tone suddenly weighty. “A militarymander? Lucas, that urgent need for pills you mentioned earlier, it was for the army?”

Lucas nodded. His face remainedposed, but there was a trace of gravity in his eyes. “Yes. The military is very interested in your pills and your medical skills–especially the pill you developed. They’d like to work with you to research and refine the form for use in their medical system.”

Sloane went quiet for a moment, her brows furrowed. She hadn’t expected her pill to catch the military’s attention.

“I told you before, cultivating the herbs artificially isn’t easy. Even with my unique cultivation method, rge–scale production won’t happen overnight.”

Lucas nced at her and replied steadily, “They’re aware of that. They’re not expecting instant results. Themander simply hopes to meet with you in person to discuss the potential for coboration. As for the herbs, the military’s research team will fully support you–they’ll do everything they can to help find a solution.”

Sloane lowered her head, her mind swirling with thoughts. She knew that working with the military could bring significant resources and support to her research, and it could contribute meaningfully to the country’s medical field.

Lucas‘ tone was careful and sincere. “I think you should seriously consider it. A partnership with the military would be a good thing for both sides.”

Sloane understood what Lucas was trying to say. She also knew he was doing this to protect her.

The realization hit her in a quiet, unexpected wave of emotion. Aside from her mentor, Lucas was the only one who’d ever looked out for her like this.

Sloane nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll give it serious thought.”

Right then, they arrived at the training center. Lucas got out first and opened the door; Sloane stepped down from the car.

“Oh, right, Andrew’s been investigating what happened at the stables these past few days,” Lucas said. “He just found out that the brown bear was lured out on purpose. Whitney bribed a staff member to release it.”

A flicker of cold light passed through Lucas‘ eyes.

Sloane didn’t look especially surprised. It was exactly what she’d suspected. She nced at Lucas‘ face, that ridiculously handsome face women practically threw themselves at and muttered under her breath, “Irresistible troublemaker.”

    Lucas caught thement and touched his face, looking innocenti. /iiNot /iimy /iifault /iI iwas /iiborn /igood- ilooking/i…

He hurried to catch up with her and exined carefully, “I’ve only met Whitney a few times, we’ve never had any private contact…”

Sloane suddenly stopped and shot him a re. “And yet she’s head over heels for you, pestering me over and over. If we weren’t already broken off, she’d probablye after me with a knife.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, her brows knit together. She didn’t know why she’d gotten so emotional all of a sudden. Flustered, she turned on her heel and ran.

Lucas thought she was angry about Whitney and panicked. He didn’t notice the subtle shift in her tone or behavior.

Sloane pressed her lips together, annoyed with herself, angry at the way she’d just snapped at

    Lucas.

Later, when Lucas stood at the podium, his gaze kept drifting toward Sloane. She stayed quiet and withdrawn, and it made his heart twist like a knife, leaving him reeling.
