The Ran family of Stonebridge was one of the city’s four major families–second in power only to the Hawthorne Group. But unlike the others, the Rans were known for keeping a low profile, rarely making a spectacle of themselves in Stonebridge’s elite social scene.
So when the typically discreet Ran family suddenly announced a grand banquet–inviting not just the city’s upper crust but also high–profile figures from both political and business circles–the news caused an immediate stir.
“What’s the Ran family nning with something this extravagant?”
“I heard it’s for Mr. Astro Ran’s newest and final disciple. This banquet is being held especially for her.”
“Oh? Who trained her? She must be something special if Mr. Astro made an exception to take her on.”
“No idea. Even the Ran family hasn’t seen this mysterious student.”
The public buzzed with spection, everyone eager to see who this mystery woman was.
And once rumors spread that Lucas would also be attending, every woman still fantasizing about being “Mrs. Hawthorne” practically lost their minds. They scrambled to prepare their gowns and jewelry, determined to catch Lucas‘ eye at the banquet.
So when they spotted Sloane at the entrance, their senses went on high alert.
Sloane had just reached the entrance to the banquet hall when she was stopped by security.
“Miss, please show your invitation,” one of the guards said politely but firmly.
Sloane paused. “I don’t have onei.” /i
Astro had invited her personally but hadn’t given her a formal invitation.
The guard frowned slightly, still maintaining his detached tone. “Without an invitation, I can’t let you in.”
Sloane knew he was just doing his job, so she didn’t press. “Then I’ll-”
A shrillugh cut her off.
“Well, if it isn’t Sloane. What, showing up without an invitation and thinking you can sneak

into the Ran banquet?” A woman in an extravagant gown walked over, her eyes full of scorn.
“Exactly. The Rivers family already went bankrupt, and her rtives cut ties with her. What right does she have to show her face at an event like this?” another woman chimed in, voice. dripping with disdain.
Just then, Wesley stepped out from the crowd.
“Sloane, have you no shame?” His tone was full of mockery. “You’re a rejected woman. Go home already and stop embarrassing the Rivers family.”
Sloane met his eyes coldly, her voice calm. “Since the Rivers family has already disowned me, you’ve got no business telling me what to do.”
Wesley’s face darkened instantly, ready tosh out, when another voice jumped in.
“Sloane, you’ve already been dumped by the Hawthorne family. Lucas doesn’t want you. Why are you still clinging to him like he’s yourst hope?”
They were all convinced she’de just to pester Lucas.
Sloane nced at the woman who spoke, eyeing her gaudy, over–the–top dress. “Heh. You say Lucas doesn’t want me, what, you think he’d be into someone that shy and desperate instead?”
Just then, a deep, icy voice rang out from behind the crowd. “I don’t like shy.”
Everyone turned to look.
Lucas walked forward in a sharp crimson suit, his expression cold andmanding.
His gaze swept over the ones who had just mocked Sloane; there was a chill in his eyes that made them all shrink back.
The woman who’d spoken earlier went pale with embarrassment. Humiliated by Lucas‘ public rejection, she covered her face and fled.
Lucas took his ce beside Sloane. Seeing how he defended her even after breaking off the engagement, the others fell silent, uneasy and ashamed.
