    Jill had just finished cursing out the Rivers family online with Cameron. After letting off some steam, she came looking for Sloane in the library.

    “Everyone online is dragging the Rivers family right now. Some people even went to their house to throw rotten eggs–it’s so satisfying just thinking about it.” Jill pulled out a chair and sat down, cheeks flushed from excitement. “If Cameron hadn’t stopped me, I would’ve gone myself.”

    Sloane closed her book and nced up at her. “If you really want to blow off steam, just pay someone to do it.”

    Jill burst outughing. “How’d you know I already did? I joined their group chat and covered all the egg money and transportation.”

    “You’re something else,” Sloane said with a smile, shaking her head as she pushed an unopened mini cake toward Jill.

    “They bullied you. Throwing rotten eggs is letting them off easy,” Jill said while unwrapping the cake.

    “Oh, I forgot to tell you,” she added after stuffing a piece of cake into her mouth and savoring it, “Samantha hasn’t been back to school in a while.”

    “Oh,” Sloane responded tly.

    Adrian and Helen hade to see herst time, clearly for something involving Samantha.

    As for Samantha, after Lena mentioned she’d been taken by Mason, Sloane hadn’t followed up. Now that Mason was dead, if Samantha had any sense, she would’ve gotten away. But who knew why she hadn’t gone back to the Rivers family?

    Seeing that Sloane wasn’t interested in the topic, Jill switched gears.

    “Sloane, how abouting to my ce during the winter break?” Jill slung her arm around Sloane’s shoulder, all enthusiasm. “I’ll take you out to eat, drink, and have fun–guaranteed good times!” Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

    Sloane knew Jill was just worried she’d be lonely over the holidays, but she still turned her down. “No need. I’ve got other stuff to take care of. It wouldn’t be convenient to stay at your ce.”

    “Alright,” Jill said, clearly a little disappointed but not pushing it. “But if you change your mind, call me anytime.”

    “Okay,” Sloane replied.

    Jill polished off thest bite of her cake and licked the corner of her mouth. “This cake from Gaoxing is seriously too good! But I thought the nearest store was pretty far from our campus. When did you go buy it?”

    Sloane nced down at the Gaoxing cake shopbel on the box. “Lucas had someone bring it.”

    Jill’s eyes lit up instantly, her gossip radar going off. “Mr. Hawthorne? He actually had cake delivered just for you? Damn, looks like he’s really into you!”

    Sloane began tidying up their boxes and said casually, “He probably just asked someone to send it over while they were out.”

    Jill wasn’t buying it. She grinned and said, “Just sent it over? That cake shop requires advance reservations and only makes a limited batch each day. Plus, as far as I know, Mr. Hawthorne doesn’t even like sweets. If that was him being casual, he’s got one hell of a thoughtful streak.”

    Sloane didn’t respond. She grabbed herptop and headed out.

    Jill quickly followed after her. “Hey, Sloane, Mr. Hawthorne’s like… top–tier. Are you really not even thinking about it?”

    Final exams ended, and most of the students had already left campus.

    Jill had invited Sloane to her ce again and again. After getting rejected, she reluctantly left with the driver, looking back at every step.
