Chapter 268 The Knife Called Love

    That innocent smile was unbearable.

Lucas gave a faint “Mm,” his gaze still sharp and frigid.

Kelvin scratched his head in excitement, pletely unaware of the chill in Lucas’s tone. He kept smiling. “Did you need something from me?”

The principal turned to Lucas. “Mr. Lucas would like to know more about the basketball team. iGo /ito the meeting room and give him a quick report.”

    “Sure!” Kelvin agreed happily.

The principal nodded, signaling him to follow. Then he led both Lucas and Kelvin to a quiet meeting

    room.

Inside, Lucas sat on the sofa, his stare as sharp as a de.

He nced at Andrew, who immediately stepped forward with a smile. “Kelvin, our CEO is really impressed with your team’s performance. He’s interested in learning about your teammates‘ family backgrounds. I heard you’re from a single–parent household?”

Kelvin paused for a moment, then nodded openly. “Yeah, I grew up with just my mom. I never had a dad, but my mom loves me a lot, and I love her too. We’re really happy.”

There was no shame or regret in his voice–only gratitude for life and deep love for his mother.

Lucas’s brow twitched slightly, his expression flickering with somethingplicated.

Andrew kept going. “And what does your mom do? It must be tough raising you on her own.”

Kelvin smiled again, his eyes full of warmth. “She’s a frencer. Mostly design work. The pay’s not amazing, but she always gives me the best of everything. She says as long as I grow up healthy and happy, that’s enough for her.”

Lucas listened in silence. Something inside him–something frozen solid–was lightly stirred.

He lowered his eyes to the paternity test report still clutched in his hand. His fingers tightened, but he didn’t move.

When Kelvin noticed the questions had stopped, he looked curiously at Lucas. “Mr. Lucas, do you want to ask about the other yers-”

“No need.” Lucas’s voice was cold and blunt, cutting him off.

Without another word, he stood and strode out of the room, his face expressionless.

Kelvin stood frozen, confused, ncing at the principal.

The principal looked puzzled too, but managed a smile and patted Kelvin’s shoulder. “Go on back, Kelvin. Mr. Lucas might have other matters to attend to.”

Lucas sat in the car, watching the world blur past the window. But his eyes were vacant, as though staring- straight through it all–straight into the heart of a truth that enraged him.

The car was quiet, the only sound the low rumble of the engine.

He gripped the paternity report so tightly his knuckles turned white. Again and again, Kelvin’s face shed through his mind–bright with youth, glowing with warmth when he spoke of his mother. That unreserved love, that unquestioning trust, stabbed Lucas straight through the heart.

He was furious–furious at Madam Aubrey’s betrayal. She had poisoned him for the sake of that illegitimate son, even willing to destroy the entire Hawthorne family.
