Sloane reached out and grabbed his wrist, pulling him gently back down to the sofa. Her fingers were cool to the touch, but the feeling sent a jolt through Lucas’s chest.
“Just let me finish,” Sloane said softly. Her voice was calm and steady, carrying a quiet strength that instantly eased his panic.
Lucas sat back down, eyes fixed on her, his voiceced with tension. “Sloane, what’s really going on?”
Sloane smiled faintly. “The poison’s gone. But the detox process wasn’t simple. The toxins lingered in my system for too long. Even though they’re out now, my body’s left with some aftereffects.”
A flicker of pain passed through Lucas’s eyes. His voice dropped low. “What kind of aftereffects? Is it serious?”
Sloane pressed her lips together and answered steadily. “My teacher said I’ll be physically weak for the next couple of years. I can’t fight, need proper rest, can’t catch cold, can’t overexert myself, and I have to avoid emotional strain.”
Lucas’s heart sank. No wonder she looked more fragile than before. Just imagining what she went through to save him made it feel like a needle was piercing his lungs with every breath.
His brow furrowed deeply, guilt etched across his face. “Sloane… I’m sorry. All this happened because you saved me…”
But Sloane cut him off with a teasing glint in her eyes. “So then, while I’m recovering, it’s your job to protect me.”
Lucas blinked in surprise, then gave a solemn nod. His voice was low and sure. “Sloane, I’ll protect you. From now on, I won’t let anything hurt you again.”
Sloane looked at him, her lips curling into a soft smile. A sly sparkle lit up her eyes. “Then I’ll be counting
on Mr. Lucas.”
She started to rise, but a sudden wave of dizziness washed over her. Her body swayed without warning.
Lucas reacted instantly, steadying her with both hands. His voice was tight. “Sloane, what is it?”
She closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again. “Just stood up too fast. I got a little dizzy.”
Lucas’s grip tightened slightly as he supported her. “How do you feel now? Should I call a doctor?”
Sloane let out a smallugh and looked up at him. “Did you forget? I am the doctor.”
Her breath brushed against his neck, carrying that faint, familiar scent of herbs.
Lucas stiffened, his heartbeat elerating uncontrobly. He looked down at her, eyes drawn to the soft flutter of her eyshes. An indescribable emotion surged up inside him.
“I..” His mind nkedpletely. He didn’t even know what he was trying to say
