Ginnie staggered back, her spine mming into the cold stone pir. She had bnever /bseen bthat /blook in Larry’s eyes before–what churned inside them was pure, murderous intent.

“Remember this.” Larry pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the fingers that had touched her; then he casually tossed the expensive silk square into the trash. “Anyone who daresy a hand on Sloane is making an enemy of me.”

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Ginnie trembling where she stood. She red at his retreating figure, teeth clenched in frustration, before suddenly yanking out her phone and sending a message: “The n moves up. Tonight.”

Inside the hall, Sloane was deep in animated conversation with Mr. Miles about the development blueprint for traditional medicine. Lucas stood nearby, but his gaze kept drifting toward the entrance. When he spotted Larry walking in alone, his brow furrowed.

“What is it?” Sloane caught his change in expression.

    Lucas withdrew his nce. “Nothing.”

Just then, the lights dimmed. The host announced that the summit was about to begin and asked all guests to take their seats.

Lucas guided Sloane toward the front row. As they passed Larry, the two men locked eyes briefly; Larry gave a faint nod, while Lucas turned away with a nk expression.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please wee Mr. Miles from the National Development and Reform Commission to give the opening address…‘

Apuse filled the room. In the midst of it, Sloane suddenly felt a hostile gaze boring into her. She turned and caught sight of Ginnie in the distance, her eyes seething with venom.

Lucas subtly shifted to block her line of sight, his voice low and steady. “Ignore irrelevant people. Weren’t you interested in the traditional medicine project? Focus.”

At his words, Sloane turned back and gave the conference her full attention, refusing to spare Ginnie another nce.

Onstage, Miles raised his voice. “Next, let’s wee the special advisor for the traditional medicine standardization project–Dr. Sloane Rivers!”

    The spotlight zed onto her.

With poise, Sloane rose. Under the weight of countless eyes, she walked gracefully to the podium.

Bathed in the glow of the lights, she began her speech with calm assurance. And below, both Lucas and Larry–amid the crowd–had their eyes fixed on her, neither willing to look away.

Later, at the summit banquet, Sloane declined yet another ss of champagne. Seeing Lucas engrossed in conversation with Mr. Miles and a few others, she slipped outside for some air.

She had barely stepped out when a coppery tang hit her nose.

Sloane froze; then came a faint cry ahead of her. “Help… help me…”

From the tone, she judged it belonged to a child. Heart tightening, she hurried toward the sound. At the corner, she found a little girl, no more than seven or eight, curled up against the wall. A vicious wound split open her right leg, blood soaking her dress.

“Don’t be afraid, I’m a doctor.” Sloane dropped into a crouch. Instinct took over; she didn’t stop to question why an injured child would be here.

She tore a strip from her skirt to examine the wound–but the instant her fingers brushed it, a strange numbness shot up her hand. iSomething’s /iiwrong/ii. /irm bells nged in her chest, but itoo /ite–the girl mped her tiny hand around Sloane’s wrist. From the wound seeped blood, glowing faintly blue.

“I’m sorry, miss…” The girl’s voice trembled as tears rolled down her cheeks. “That man said… if I didn’t do this, something bad will happen to my mom…‘
