CHAPTER 486: CHAPTER 433: REGRETTING NOT HAVING MET YOU SOONER

Bai Chengxi once mentioned that this place is often used as a racing track at night, but I didn’t expect these people to be so brazen, almost racing as if no one else was around.

Blinded by the headlights, Zhuo Yuqing couldn’t keep her eyes open and instinctively raised her hand to shield her face. The roaring sound of the car was already by her ear, and she forgot to dodge in the moment, her mind going blank.

Suddenly, a pair of hands appeared around her waist. Bai Chengxi had been standing on the outside and now suddenly pushed her forcefully, sending Zhuo Yuqing stumbling toward the side of the road.

The sound of the car engine quickly faded into the distance on the empty street, and calmness returned. From time to time, curses could be heard from ahead: "These lunatics, someone really should deal with them."

Zhuo Yuqing’s ears were still ringing, but she finally heard the sounds and when she came to her senses, her first reaction was to look for Bai Chengxi. He had pushed her at the critical moment; where was he now?

The thought of all the terrible possibilities made Zhuo Yuqing’s heart seem to leap from her chest, her limbs shaking uncontrollably as she turned around stiffly.

"Bai..." Seeing Bai Chengxi sitting by the side of the road, Zhuo Yuqing’s eyes were fixed on him, unblinking. Although he was seated there, he was in a sorry state, his cell phone and wallet scattered on the ground.

Zhuo Yuqing got up and ran to him, kneeling in front of him. Her hands trembled as she held his shoulders, "Bai Chengxi, how are you? Where did you get hit? Are you hurt?"

Bai Chengxi’s thin eyelids fluttered twice as he looked up at her panicked expression, then he broke into a satisfied smile, "Worried about me?"

Zhuo Yuqing didn’t expect him to be able to smile at a time like this. She was nearly scared to death. If he hadn’t pushed her away just now, if he had been a little slower and couldn’t dodge, what she would be facing now would be a dead body. At that speed, how could anyone survive?

In that life-and-death moment, he chose to save her first. Likes and loves didn’t matter anymore. She began to regret her pettiness, regretted her jealousy when she found out he had been intimate with another woman. She felt ashamed of her trivialities and couldn’t help but cry uncontrollably, "I’m sorry, Bai Chengxi, I’m sorry."

"Fool." Bai Chengxi awkwardly lifted his hand and rubbed her head, his fingertips gently wiping away the tears from the corner of her eye, "Why cry? I’m not dead."

Zhuo Yuqing cried even harder, unable to help but to hug him and sob loudly as all her fear turned into tears spilling out, the recent events too frightening to even think about.

"Bai Chengxi, you big idiot." Zhuo Yuqing raised her fist and pounded on his back, "Big idiot."

With that punch, the Bai Chengxi she was embracing suddenly tensed, inhaling sharply with pain and couldn’t help but grunt.

Zhuo Yuqing belatedly sensed his reaction, anxiously looking at his face. He was in so much pain that he grimaced, groaning lowly, "Zhuo Yuqing, are you trying to murder your husband?"

Only then did Zhuo Yuqing notice her palm that had hit his back was somewhat wet. Bringing it to her eyes, she saw fresh red blood. Having never seen such a sight, she turned pale with fear, her lips trembling so much she couldn’t speak clearly, "Bai Chengxi, Bai Chengxi, Bai Chengxi..."

Bai Chengxi smiled helplessly and indulgently, "Silly girl, aren’t you going to call 120?"

"Right, right, 120." Zhuo Yuqing hurriedly rummaged through her bag for her phone, shaking so badly with fear. She dialed the number and while on the call, held Bai Chengxi’s hand tightly, unable to say their location. So, she handed the phone to Bai Chengxi.

He calmly reported an address and hung up. Although the pain in his back was piercing, seeing her like a panicked little hamster, he couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

"Bai Chengxi, have you lost your mind, still laughing." Does he know how worried she was? She has never been so startled in her entire life.

"I’m fine." He reassured her, his long fingers caressing the palm of her hand, "Really, it’s just a minor external injury, it’s nothing serious."

"You’ve lost so much blood, yet you say it’s nothing." Her anger in his eyes seemed to be all about caring for him. The way she panicked just now warmed his heart in the cold night.

In the moment when the car was approaching, he had pushed her away without hesitation, his thoughts and actions perfectly aligned. Everyone is afraid of death, but at that moment he thought that it didn’t matter if he died, but she must live well, a promise he made to Zhuo Yao and to himself.

Zhuo Yuqing helped Bai Chengxi to rest under a tree nearby, taking out tissues from her bag trying to wipe the blood from his wound. His shirt was torn open at the back showing a large gash. Thankfully it was winter and he was wearing more than usual, or else who knows how bad the injury would have been. Even so, blood continued to seep through the torn cloth of his coat, his khaki coat now showing a large, congealed patch of blood, a horrifying sight.

Zhuo Yuqing felt dizzy at the sight of all that blood but suppressed the fear in her heart. She placed the tissue over the wound and pressed down hard. The blood seeped through the tissue, staining her palms red, the warm sensation was not one of warmth but the helpless feeling of life slipping away.

A wave of intense pain filled her heart.

"I didn’t finish what I was saying earlier," Bai Chengxi moved to lean against the tree, half of his body resting on her legs, feeling weak from blood loss.

"Don’t say it," Zhuo Yuqing’s nose felt unbearably sour, trying hard not to cry again, "Bai Chengxi, no matter who you were with before, that’s all in the past. Let’s live well together in the future, stop thinking about the past, okay?"

"Is that true?"

Zhuo Yuqing nodded vigorously, "Sincere, everyone has a past, me too."

Bai Chengxi blinked twice and turned his head to look at her: "You’ve had a boyfriend before?"

From what he knew, Zhuo Yuqing was pure like an uncolored sheet of white paper, hardly resembling someone who had been in love. He was the first to disbelieve that she had a boyfriend.

"Not a boyfriend." Zhuo Yuqing’s mind sketched out Tang Tianyou’s handsome features. Whenever she recalled the past, it was filled with a little girl’s joy, but now with a tinge of melancholy, the dominant feeling was a sister’s affection for her brother. She knew that Tang Tianyou had become a permanent memory in her time of unrequited love but had officially exited her world of romance, "It was someone I had a crush on before."

Bai Chengxi burst out laughing, rubbed her head as if soothing a puppy: "Silly girl, does a crush even count?"

Having said that, he suddenly remembered those Moments she had posted, which all revealed a young girl’s sentiments. Truthfully, he was very curious about who could have been the object of her secret affection. In actuality, who it was seemed less important; more important was seeing if he could outshine that person. He felt a bit... jealous.

"Then we’re even." Zhuo Yuqing switched to a new tissue. Due to her persistence, the bleeding from the wound had significantly lessened. The distant sound of an ambulance could faintly be heard.

Bai Chengxi held her hand resting on his leg, "I’ve known her for nearly twenty years, she was my first love, and the woman I once wanted to marry."

"Then why did you break up?"

"Different values, different dreams, in the end, all we could do was part ways." Bai Chengxi recounted calmly: "Looking back, I feel somewhat relieved."

"Relieved?" Zhuo Yuqing didn’t understand and leaned her face closer to him, "Why?"

Bai Chengxi chuckled, and gently kissed her approaching face: "If I had married her back then, how would I marry you now? Do you want me to commit bigamy?"

Although his tone was half-joking, to Zhuo Yuqing it seemed like a roundabout confession. She couldn’t help but wear a smug smile, yet her tone remained harsh: "Why should I care, for all I know, you might be regretting it in your heart right now."

"Haha." Bai Chengxi laughed heartily, pinched her face, "Yeah, I’m green with regret."

Zhuo Yuqing glared at him: "Bai Chengxi."

"I regret so much that I didn’t meet you earlier." He continued laughing, "But when I was in elementary school, you weren’t even born yet, even if I wanted to meet you it wasn’t possible."

"Bai Chengxi." Zhuo Yuqing playfully punched his shoulder, not daring to use too much force, like a kitten scratching ticklishly, and ended up giggling: "Then I should have just been born earlier."

Bai Chengxi was taken aback, a surge of tender emotion suddenly rising in his heart.

Some people, once you meet them, even if it’s a step late, are destined to walk through life hand in hand; others, even if you meet them a step early, are ultimately not fated to be together.

Although he and she had missed several years of the flowers blooming and wilting, they could now sit and watch this year’s gentle flow of water, as time slipped by.

Missings, may not be a misfortune after all.

Bai Chengxi and Zhuo Yuqing arrived at the hospital and were taken into the emergency treatment room. There was too much blood, sticking the clothes to the inside, which had to be peeled off little by little, aggravating the flesh with each peel.

Zhuo Yuqing didn’t dare to look, clutching his hand tightly throughout, with cold sweat in his palm.

Even with such pain, he kept his teeth clenched without making a sound, with beads of sweat rolling down his forehead and dropping heavily onto the back of her hand.

Zhuo Yuqing felt an indescribable heartache and yet could not alleviate his pain: "It’s all my fault, I’m to blame."

Bai Chengxi’s voice was hoarse with consolation: "Blame you for what, this matter isn’t that simple."

"What else do you intend to do, arson and murder?" Zhuo Yuqing wiped away her tears, smiling as she looked at his serious face.

He just lifted his thin lips without speaking.

Arson and murder, huh? He would probably do it.

"Doctor, will there be a scar?" Zhuo Yuqing asked anxiously.

"The wound is deep, scarring is certain." The doctor carefully picked up the tweezers, "But you’re lucky, it didn’t reach the bones, or else you’d have to be hospitalized. At the very least you’d have to lie in bed for a couple of weeks."

Zhuo Yuqing sighed in relief upon hearing this, holding his hand even tighter. No matter his past love life, none of it mattered anymore. All she wanted was for him to be safe for the rest of his life, free from any more harm, and that was enough.
