The Smiling Death
Chapter 58: Nest of Monsters
CHAPTER 58: NEST OF MONSTERS
The group was looking at the sky. The barrier started to vanish, yet they knew... it was still there.
"What’s happening?" Amon muttered.
His eyes fell on the sight before him now.
Down in the huge pit, the most striking feature was the bizarre tree located in the center.
At the base of the tree was drawn a huge, complex magic circle. Looking like some ritual magic.
Between the circle lay seven dead bodies of children, limp. A dark violet crystal was embedded in the middle of the circle. It pulsed with energy and emitted a dangerous hue.
Blood spilled on the ground.
And surrounding the tree and the magic circle was a horde of Barlguras.
Not a small one, but big.
More than fifty Barlguras were growling there. Bloodthirsty eyes.
Some of them were on the tall trees while some were on the ground.
Protecting the magic circle.
Selena also turned her face to the sight. Her red eyes narrowed sharply.
"Seems like some kind of ritual. Don’t know what it is about."
Her expression was solemn. She exhaled heavily.
"Something is happening in town... something very dangerous. We need to go there... but not before destroying whatever is in front of us."
She turned her face toward Amon.
"Amon, you..." and then looked at Vixra "...with Vixra. You two go back to the orphanage and protect the children and others. The town is not safe anymore."
Her eyes locked on Jareth.
"Jareth and I will clean up here."
Amon frowned and said, "But there’s a horde of monsters here!"
Before he could say anything more, Jareth chimed in.
"Don’t worry. They will be no problem to us. Didn’t you just see how strong President is? I am not weak either. You both should go to the orphanage."
Amon remained silent and nodded. He knew how strong Selena was. They wouldn’t have any problem killing the horde.
"Okay. You two take care here and come back as soon as possible." Vixra’s expression was worried. Even though she knew what Selena was capable of, she couldn’t help but be worried for them.
"Hah... let’s go, Senior Vixra... we should go back as fast as possible."
Amon’s voice was urgent now. He knew it wouldn’t be easy anymore. What if something else went to the orphanage and kidnapped more children... or something more vile might be happening in town right now?
Vixra gave him a nod.
Both of them started to run back in the direction they came from.
While rushing back to the orphanage, Amon looked back at Jareth and Selena. He saw their figures from a long distance.
Selena, who was looking down, without saying anything, jumped.
Jareth followed after her.
’Haha, what a mess!’ Amon thought and looked straight.
Vixra was running just beside him.
They both knew that this night was going to be a long one.
And a chaotic one.
---
Crichhhkkk!
Roarrrrrr!
Crichhhkkk!
The sounds of Barlguras roaring and screaming filled the surroundings.
They sensed incoming enemies.
Their gazes turned to two human figures. Someone had come into their territory. A place where there was something that needed to be protected by them.
They were angry. Wanting to kill those intruders and eat them.
"Kahhhh—"
One who was close to those human figures screamed in anger.
Thud!
But unfortunately, its head fell on the ground with a thud.
"It looks like a nest of these monsters," Selena said while beheading the first creature.
Jareth didn’t reply. Raising his sword, he cleanly cut the incoming enemy.
The monsters didn’t wait anymore and lunged at the two humans who had just killed their comrades.
Clawed hands sharp, using their muscular elasticity to the maximum, to end their prey.
Selena’s sword moved like lightning. A blue line immediately bisected the monster charging in front.
There was another flying at her from the other side.
She changed her sword’s path and slash another one.
She moved. Vanished from one position to another in a flash. Her mana-coated sword gleamed dangerously.
Blue multiple lines formed in the dark.
Splash!
Splash!
Splash!
Blood splattered nonstop. Bodies fell on the ground, dead.
Selena was killing monsters one after another.
Her expression was emotionless. Her only goal was to kill all of them.
Her movements were fast.
Ten Barlguras dashed and jumped at her at the same time.
Clang!
Yet the outcome was no different.
She spun on her leg. Her sword slashed in a perfect round.
As ten bodies were cut down in halves.
Blood splattered on her body. Her silver-white hair was blood red now. Droplets of blood fell on the ground from her body.
"Hah... hah..." Her breathing was heavy, yet her eyes were full of resolve, with a cold glint.
On the other hand,
Jareth was fighting with discipline.
Diagonal slash.
A monster attacked him.
He stepped back and raised his shield to the left.
Thudd!
Another clawed hand collided against his shield.
While his sword thrust forward.
Tearing into the monster’s heart.
The smell of blood hit his nose. Yet there was no disgust on Jareth’s face.
He gave death to them one after another.
He was not fast like Selena,
Yet his every move was calculated. No extra movements. No unnecessary moves.
He perfectly knew when to block and when to attack.
The two eighteen-year-old students were cutting monsters like butter.
But suddenly something roared from the top of the huge tree.
"ROARRRR!"
Its voice echoed through the night’s forest. The trees shook wildly.
All remaining monsters that could be counted on fingers stopped in their position.
Looking at the tree with fear and submission.
Selena also ceased her movements and gazed at the top of the tree.
Jareth, who had just slashed his enemy, also stopped and looked up.
A shadowy figure jumped from the huge tree’s dense branches and leaves.
THUDD!
An unidentifiable creature caught their eyes. It looked like a life form made of lumps of Barlguras stuck together.
Its shape was similar to that of a Barlgura, but in size, it was as big as a small house.
Though it was squirming and moving, judging by its limbs, it appeared to walk bipedally with four limbs.
Its eyes were big and blood red. Shining with bloodlust.
