It didn’t seem entirely necessary for Kaysen to join us, but having him along was probably better than going without him.

With a slight nod, I granted Kaysen permission to accompany us. Eiren, standing nearby, suddenly spoke up.

“Excuse me, but we haven’t even been properly introduced yet.”

Realizing his mistake, Kaysen extended his hand.

“My apologies for the late introduction. Kaysen Hoppen, former knight commander.”

“Quite the distinguished guest we have here.”

Eiren nodded deeply in greeting, displaying an ease in dealing with nobility that hinted at experience.

There was a subtle elegance and confidence in his demeanor that spoke of familiarity with such encounters. It was a stark contrast to the hostility he had initially shown toward me, revealing a certain refinement in his character.

Had he been searching for his father as much as he claimed, or was there more to it?

“Eiren, do you happen to know any nobles personally?”

My question seemed to crack the calm mask Eiren had been wearing. A fleeting glimpse of something beneath—the hint of pain, or perhaps avoidance—was all I caught before he quickly composed himself again.
