CHAPTER 537: WARNING

The night breeze whistled, and the atmosphere suddenly grew heavy with tension and so much more.

Abrielle was still on guard; her guts screamed a warning to her of the dangers. Whoever this woman was, she wasn’t to be trifled with.

"Warn me," Abrielle blurted. She took a step back, her eyes darting through the gaps of the door. Where was Cedric?

"Why should I trust you ?" Abrielle asked. She cautiously took another step close to the door. Elysia could read through her. They scoffed at Abrielle. Her fingers clicked, and the doors behind Abrielle were shut just before she could step in.

Elysia circled around Abrielle, her sharp dark eyes watching the princess. Noticing how she shrank while trying to keep a tough appearance.

She stopped standing in the opposite direction in front of the door. Her hands relaxed by her side.

Elysia was pretty tall for a woman; it was understandable that she was Cedric’s mother. The first prince of Draconia only had a few people close to his height.

Under the moonlight, she looked alluring, and even Abrielle found herself insecure. Elysia’s skin was kissed by the moonlight. Her curves weren’t exaggerated, just right and perfect. Delicate touched by the fine silk dress she wore.

Her brow arched at Abrielle, "That depends on you. If you want to believe. Don’t try anything stupid." She said. She did not bother to give Abrielle any words of reassurance.

They both knew Abrielle didn’t stand a chance. Just glancing at Elysia, Abrielle, I knew from the start that she was outmatched. Abrielle’s fingers dug into her dress trying to hide how they slightly trembled

"What do you mean by doing something stupid? I am not the one claiming to be my husband’s dead mother." Abrielle calmly said, despite her fear. Elysia was impressed by how Abrielle could keep up the facade of being brave when she wasn’t exactly that.

She glanced at the ginger’s trembling hands, which still had a fierce look on her face. "It might sound ridiculous but it is the truth. I am his mother." Elysia iterated. She was a bit surprised that Abrielle knew Eleanor was behind her supposed death when Cedric wasn’t certain.

There was something more to this girl, a simple mortal who had her son within her palms without even knowing the powers she held.

One who tried to kill Cedric, she did her investigation and heard the whispers among Cedric’s men which they thought no one knew. Abrielle had attempted to assassinate the prince during their honeymoon, and Elysia was certain that it was not the first time, and her fears were true.

While Cedric was unconscious, she paid a visit to an old friend, the goddess of dreams, an ancient Oracle, to get as much information as she could. The oracle’s vision was blurry, but she saw enough.

The poisoning and how desperate she was to go to the assassin guide. "You can try screaming or foolishly jumping. Cedric won’t even hear you, and besides, there is no need for such extreme action." Elysia said exactly what was on her mind.

Abrielle was stunned, she could see through her. How much could those dark eyes see? It made her wary. There was a glint of enmity in her eyes.

She didn’t bother hiding her dislike.

"What do you want?" Abrielle repeated as if she hadn’t asked the same question before. Elysia sighed, "Just to talk to you. At least one of you should still have some common sense to stop this stupidity." Elysia said through her gritted teeth trying her best to keep her anger on a rein

When she heard about her sons’ ploy of taking Cedric to Heliosa while knowing perfectly well what would happen, she almost lost her mind.

She didn’t like Abrielle, but that wasn’t why she was against this union.

Which mother would be happy hearing her son was married to a woman who tried to kill him? Even going as far as to risk her life. There was no mother, none who held a bit of affection for their children

But that wasn’t the problem. Her fear lies in the fact of how much Cedric loved this human. She was beautiful, but Elysia didn’t see anything else aside from a spoiled and entitled noble who reminded her too much of Eleanor.

This relationship was bound to fail and end tragically just like it did in the past when some gods got involved with mortals. One of which was a tragic story whispered among the gods.

Cedric was cursed, or rather blessed, to have inherited more of her side than Kaiden, including the rules over them. Elysia was scared of what would happen to Cedric if he lost this human. She didn’t understand why he was fighting a losing game.

"I don’t want to hurt you." She said then stared straight into Abrielle’s eyes. "Cedric isn’t what you think he is and he is making a mistake."

Abrielle’s heart squeezed, she drew in a deep breath. Why did those words feel targeted at her? "Am I the mistake?" She blurted without realising. Elysia’s gaze flickered, that was her answer.

"You are, and you need to stop him." Elysia self-righteously said that Abrielle’s feelings didn’t matter. She just called the princess a mistake, and deep down, Abrielle agreed. Cedric wasn’t meant to fall in love with her ..

"I don’t get you," she said, her voice hoarse and filled with emotion. "Why am I a mistake? What makes you think I would stop my husband from whatever he is doing that is a mistake?" She asked, her voice trembled..

She was scared to hear whatever reason this woman had to say. "If you love him, you will want what’s best for him, and being with you isn’t it. He is just confused.".

Confused, Abrielle was taken aback by Elysia’s audacity. A laugh slipped out of her lips. She glanced at the sky filled with heavy snow clouds. "How self-righteous of you?" She sneered slowly, turning her gaze to Elysia.

Elysia’s frown deepened. It wasn’t the reply she expected, but Abrielle was not done. "His entire life, you weren’t there, and now you think you have the right to dictate how he lives his life. Saying his wife is a mistake straight to her face with no reasonable excuse."

Her voice was cold and laced with disdain. She already had an idea of what was happening. Elysia knew Cedric would not listen so she tried to convince her with whatever twisted reasoning she had.

"Who do you think you are?" She asked with her gaze unwavering. Her hands weren’t trembling again like a strange courage possessed her.

It was soft and gentle, Elysia laughed. Different from her expectations, she wasn’t mad; instead, she seemed amused. Abrielle knew the look in her eyes, one which didn’t see her as anything. "Who do you think I am?" She cocked her brow at Abrielle and drew close. Her height and presence are intimidating.

"Fine, I will tell you. I am the one who said his life when he was dying because of you." Elysia spat, her eyes grew cold. "We both know Cedric would not have been hurt if not for you." She accused Abrielle of tugging the strings of her heart, letting guilt eat her up.

Abrielle stepped back, her face slowly losing control. ’ So she was the one who came for him.’ Abrielle thought, realising Elysia had saved Cedric. "It wasn’t my fault. We got into that situation because we were framed." She argued, stuttering out her words.

Elysia scoffed, " You can keep on lying to yourselves, pretending like your relationship isn’t jinxed. You got lucky last time but next time you won’t be that lucky. It is either you or his life."

Elysia’s voice faded, she let her words sink in. It started to snow, the flakes lit like a shower. "And the Cedric I know would give up his life for a woman who wanted him dead." Abrielle’s head bobbed up.

Shock widened in those eyes. Her lips parted then closed. Scared and confused how Elysia knew. There was no way Cedric would have told her. "Why are you surprised?" Elysia sneered, her jaw clenched then she drew in a deep breath

She hated how she was so useless. The rules were stopping her from intervening as she wished she could. She reined in her anger, her aura calm like a lake. Like a true queen.

"You don’t love him, so it should not be hard to let go. I know you want him to be happy. That’s the least you can do after everything he did for you ". Her words were heavy on Abrielle’s shoulder. She knew Elysia was hiding something, something worse than this.

She raised her head, her eyes glassy with tears. "He loves me, how can he be happy without me?" She sniffed,

"I love him." She admitted the first time out loud. "And yes, our past wasn’t ideal, but I do love him now. Why can’t we just be together?"

She wanted to know why everything wanted to pull them away. Why was it like this? Was her sin too great?

"It’s fate, one so cruel. Cedric took more after me. He is just confused now." Elysia answered, then moved forward leaving no space between them

"He might grieve if you leave him, but the pain would be less compared to what lies ahead if this continues." She stepped away, and Abrielle’s eyes followed her, watching her walk to the end of the balcony.

"If you love him as you claim you will want his happiness. His true happiness doesn’t lie with you." She paused. The silence grew between them

Both still have a lot to say. "Cedric might be sad at first, but when he finds his true soul mate, he will be able to smile again." She faded into your darkness with her last words heavy on Abrielle’s heart.
