Wesley told him roughly how Jessica had been doing. “Her mood’s stable for now, but no one can guarantee it won’t swing again. My suggestion’s still the same. You should think it over.”

    Brian nodded. “Thanks.”

Then he took the initiative to tell Wesley how Jessica had been the past few days, asking him to help analyze things.

Wesley didn’t refuse. After they talked, Brian felt he’d gained a lot and grew even more grateful to Wesley.

He stopped pushing to see Jessica, but he still kept doing what he always did–bringing her three meals a day, all kinds of snacks, the asional local treats from the fans online, and the postcards Jacob picked up on his trips.

Of course, white putting all that in, he didn’t forget to check the mailbox.

Luckily, ever since he’d moved there, those scary things hadn’t shown up in the mailbox again. But the investigation into what happened before had hit a

    wall.

Brian couldn’t rest easy until he found out who was behind it,

It was another Monday. Brian made breakfast early, opened the door to put it in the mailbox, and ran right into Jessicab, /bwho’d gotten up extra early.

“Morning, Jessi. Have you eaten?” Brian paused, quickly fixed his expression, and smiled to greet her.

Jessica just gave him a cold look, grabbed her bag, and walked off.

The night before, she’d gotten Madeline’stest pregnancy report.

Jessica thought, ‘Her baby’s heartbeat could be heard now. Brian must be really happy about that.

‘In a few months, he’ll have three more kids. No wonder he’s so cheerful first thing in the morning like he couldn’t wait for everyone to know his good

    news.‘

Jessica thought coldly, getting upset by the minute.

Brian watched her walk away. He’d be lying if he said it didn’t sting. He thought, ‘But Jessi’s sick right now. This isn’t how she really is.‘

He tried to tell himself that, and finally, it didn’t hurt so much.

When he got to the office, he was still thinking maybe he’d take a breakter to buy more breakfast and have a delivery person send it to Jessica.

i‘/iBut what should I get?‘ he wondered.

The private elevator opened right to the floor with the CEO’s office. Brian stepped out, looked up, and noticed Renee Kent at the open secretary desk, bending over and scarfing down her breakfast.

An employee, Holly Almond, said, “Why’d you bring breakfast to your desk today? Hurry up and eat it. If Mr. Atkinson or Jackson sees byou/b, you’ll be in trouble.”

“Mmm… Got stuck in traffic. I didn’t have time to eat anywhere nearby, so I had to grab it from my usual ce and bring it up. Otherwiseb, /bI’d starve all morning. I can’t handle that,” Renee said.

She scarfed down the donut in her hand and then took a sip of bthe /bhot cocoa that was sweet but not too rich. She felt like bshe’d /bbe /bback to blife/b.

Holly said, “Fair enough. Which ce did you get it from? Looks really good.”

“The one I took you to before. They’ve been doing it forever. Their

amazing,” Renee answered while rushing to finish the rest of her breakfast.

“Oh, that ce. Yeah, it’s real…” Holly started agreeing and suddenly stopped mid–sentence.

“Even if you agree, no need to get that worked up.” Renee looked confused while gulping. The next second, a heavy pnded on her back.

At the same time, Holly blurted out a loud greeting. “Good morning, M–Mr. Atkinson.”

Renee’s head shot up. As soon as she saw Brian, her hand shook so fast and caught it.

    hard that

unfinished hot cocoa almost spilled all over the desk. But Brian reacted

When Renee saw that, her hands shook even more. She forced a smile that looked worse than a grimace, stammering, “G–Good morning, Mr. Atkinson.”

Brian set the hot cocoa down calmly, gave her a quick look, and said,”

    “Come to my

office.” Then he turned and left.
