CHAPTER 68: CHAPTER 68: ZHANG YUXIU’S FEARS.

Zhang Yuxiu twisted her fingers, her eyes involuntarily moving to Old Madam Huo’s bed. She was just in time to see the old lady’s fingers twitch.

Her heart leaped while her chest rose and fell rapidly, and she swallowed.

Yue Ning took in all of her expressions, and her eyes narrowed. With each passing second, her suspicions became stronger.

Zhang Yuxiu wasn’t the only one who saw Old Madam Huo twitching her fingers. Huo Feng caught it, and a relieved sigh subconsciously escaped from his mouth.

"Ning Ning, grandmother’s fingers twitched. I’m sure she will regain her consciousness soon."

Zhang Yuxiu’s eyes widened at his words. No... no, she couldn’t allow this. For a fleeting second, a cold gleam lit up her eyes, but it was gone the next moment as she lowered her lashes, her face carefully blank.

Unfortunately, Yue Ning didn’t see this vicious glint in Zhang Yuxiu’s eyes as her eyes were focused on Old Madam Huo.

Yue Ning smiled as she excitedly held his arms. "She will be fine, I have that feeling."

Huo Feng’s shoulders relaxed in relief.

"Huo Feng, I would like to ask a question." Yue Ning suddenly spoke up.

"Ask away," Huo Feng was in a good mood.

Yue Ning didn’t ask her questions immediately, instead she glanced at Zhang Yuxiu. She didn’t say anything, but Huo Feng understood the meaning of her actions.

"Let’s sit on the sofa," he guided her to the sofa. After they settled, he probed. "What do you want to ask?"

"Are there CCTV cameras in the living room of the ancestral mansion?" She lowered her voice as she asked.

Huo Feng’s brows knitted, before nodding.

"After Grandma passes the critical stage, do you mind if I check it out?" She asked again.

Huo Feng seemed to understand what she was trying to say. "Are you suspecting that this wasn’t an accident?" He queried.

Yue Ning nodded heavily. "No matter how I look at it, I have every reason to doubt it."

Huo Feng exhaled heavily. "I can ask one of my men to retrieve the tape."

"That would be for the best." Yue Ning was satisfied. She couldn’t help but feel glad. He didn’t doubt her words, but instead, he believed her wholeheartedly. Perhaps, it could also be because his grandma is the victim this time.

While they were both discussing, they had no idea that Zhang Yuxiu’s attention was on both of them.

Her face morphed into a frown. ’What are they talking about?’ She murmured under her breath while rubbing her sweaty palms on her clothes.

She didn’t know why, but she felt a sense of foreboding the more she stared at them.

Huo Feng, on the other hand, sent a message to one of his men. Yue Ning watched him put his phone in his pocket, and she understood what he had done.

______________

Without them realising, time had already passed. Before long, the door to the ward was pushed open, and Huo Yan came in with tears in her eyes.

"Grandma," she rushed to the bedside, holding the frail woman’s hands while she bawled. She didn’t even realize that there were three other people in the ward.

"Grandma, please wake up. Yanyan can’t live without you. I promise to be a good child. I won’t cause trouble anymore. Please wake up."

Huo Yan subbed loudly, her tears dripping onto the bedspread.

Yue Ning breathed out. She could understand the young girl’s feelings. This was the only family member left that took care of she and her brother.

Huo Feng watched his sister breakdown, but he didn’t utter a word.

Yue Ning walked to Huo Yan, and held her in her arms. "You don’t have to cry so much. Grandmother would be fine, that’s a promise."

Hearing the reassuring words, Huo Yan finally noticed Yue Ning who had a soothing smile on her face.

"Sister-in-law," her cries reduced, but her shoulders trembled as she hugged Yue Ning tightly.

Yue Ning patted her back gently, reassuring her. "She will be fine, don’t you worry." She continually repeated these words to her.

After a few minutes, Huo Yan’s cries died down, but her eyes were extremely red, which was evidence of her crying.

"Gege," she called out while a whimper escaped from her mouth.

"Sit. There is no use for crying. Have faith that grandmother will come out safely," Huo Feng patted the space beside him so she could have her seat.

She sniffed, and walked to the couch.

Yue Ning looked at the siblings, a quiet breath escaping her lips.

"That’s the third sigh today," the system teased, its voice trying to lighten her mood.

Yue Ning didn’t give it a reply, but she chuckled softly. She understood what it was trying to do, and it worked.

"Xiao Yan, Fei’er didn’t come with you?" Zhang Yuxiu asked after a few minutes of silence.

Huo Yan frowned but still shook her head.

"Why didn’t she come? She knows her grandmother is here, doesn’t she?" Zhang Yuxiu pressed with a sharp tone.

Huo Yan’s frown deepened. "I don’t know. Stop asking me questions I can&t answer."

"You study in the same college. You could’ve at least brought her along," Zhang Yuxiu muttered, unwilling to let it go.

"Enough." Huo Yan rubbed her forehead, too tired to argue. She turned away, ignoring her.

The older woman’s mouth clamped shut, but her hands twisted tightly in her lap. A cold sweat gathered at the nape of her neck while her eyes darted around.

Yue Ning and Huo Feng exchanged glances, their faces unreadable. Neither of them stepped in, and the silence that followed pressed heavily on Zhang Yuxiu’s chest.

To her, it was suffocating. If they had already begun suspecting her... she shook her head, clearing the thought from her mind. Her nails dug into her palm at the tense atmosphere.

All of a sudden, Huo Feng’s phone buzzed. He glanced down, and his expression hardened. Lifting his gaze, he locked eyes with Yue Ning. She felt her chest tighten at the unspoken meaning in his look.

"Xiao Yan, stay with Grandma. I need to have a word with your brother," Yue Ning said quickly.

Huo Yan nodded, still red-eyed.

Huo Feng and Yue Ning stepped out of the ward under Zhang Yuxiu’s burning stare.

In the corridor, Huo Feng’s voice was low. "The video just came in."

Yue Ning’s chest tightened, a chill crawling over her skin. Something told her... what they were about to see would change everything.
