I pressed my hands against Lily’s belly just as the baby’s heartbeat stopped totally.
"No, no, no," I whispered, fear flooding through me. In forty years of having wolf pups, I’d never felt anything like this. The child inside Lily wasn’t dying - it was transforming into something that didn’t need a heartbeat to live.
Around us, the floating battlefield of chaos energy pulsed with strange colors. Shadow-Lily’s attack had stopped in mid-air, as if the baby’s power was holding back time itself. Caleb’s golden form zed brighter, but even he looked frightened.
"Dr. Sarah, what’s happening?" Lily gasped between contractions that wereing too fast, too strong.
I tried to keep my voice calm, but inside I was yelling. This pregnancy had been impossible from the start. When Lily first came to me three months ago, her blood tests showed results that broke every rule I knew about biology. Her baby’s DNA had extra genes that shouldn’t exist. The child’s growth rate changed from day to day. Sometimes the beating sounded like one baby, sometimes like three.
But I never imagined this.
"The baby..." I started, then stopped. How do you tell a mother that her child might not be totally human anymore? "Lily, I need you to listen to me very carefully. Your baby is fighting the shadow attack from inside your belly."
"That’s impossible," Caleb said, but his voice shook with hope.
"Nothing about this pregnancy has been possible," I shot back. Through my hands, I could feel the baby’s energy pushing against Shadow-Lily’s darkness like a wall of pure light. "This child has abilities we’ve never seen before."
Another contraction hit Lily, and this time golden sparks flew from her skin. The baby was trying to be born, but something was wrong with the process. Instead of moving down like normal births, the child seemed to be gettingrger inside the womb.
"Dr. Sarah," Lily cried out, tears running down her face. "Something’s breaking. I can feel it tearing."
I ced my hands on her belly again and gasped. The baby wasn’t just growing - it was developing new parts that had never existed in any creature before. I could feel tiny wings folding against its back, gills that opened and closed along its neck, and a third eye in the center of its forehead.
"Caleb, I need to know everything about your kind," I ordered. "What happens when an Order being reproduces?"
His face went pale. "We don’t. Order beings are made, not born. I’m the first of my kind to ever have a child."
Shadow-Lily’s voice cut through our fear, though her attack was still frozen. "You fools don’t understand what you’ve made. That baby isn’t just Order and Bnce mixed together. It’s Order, Bnce, and Omega wolf united. It’s the first being in existence with the power to rewrite the rules of reality itself."
The baby kicked, and suddenly I could see things that weren’t there before. Ghostly images of other realities shed around us - worlds where wolves ruled over humans, dimensions where magic had never existed, universes where Shadow-Lily had won and covered everything in darkness.
"The baby can see all possible futures," I whispered in wonder. "It’s trying to choose which reality to be born into."
"What do you mean?" Lily asked through gritted teeth.
"Your child has the power to decide which version of existence bes real," I exined, my hands trembling as I felt the baby’s incredible energy. "Right now, it’s looking at millions of different possibilities for how this moment could end."
Caleb’s golden light red brighter. "That’s why Shadow-Lily wants the baby. If she controls it, she can choose a world where her darkness wins."
Another tightening hit, stronger than before. This time, the baby’s power leaked out of Lily’s body like glowing mist. Where the mist touched the floating arena, new things appeared - flowers that sang instead of blooming, crystals that held tiny storms inside them, water that flowed upward in spirals.
"The baby is creating," I breathed. "It’s not just choosing between existing worlds. It’s making new ones."
Shadow-Lily’s frozen attack suddenly began moving again, but slower now, fighting against the baby’s protecting power. "You can’t stop me forever, little one," she snarled. "When you’re born, you’ll be too weak to defend yourself. And I’ll be waiting."
The baby reacted by sending a pulse of energy through Lily that made her scream. But it wasn’t a scream of pain - it was a sound of pure power that shattered the air around us.
"Dr. Sarah," Lily gasped, her eyes wide with sudden understanding. "The baby just told me something. Somehow, I can hear its thoughts."
"What did it say?"
"It’s not ready to be born yet. It’s too dangerous. If ites into this world while Shadow-Lily is here, the birth itself could destroy everything." Lily’s face went white with fear. "But the contractions won’t stop. My body is pushing the birth whether the baby’s ready or not."
I felt another wave of the child’s amazing power, and suddenly understood the horrible truth. This wasn’t just a tough birth - it was a cosmic disaster waiting to happen.
"Caleb," I said quickly. "If this baby is born before it learns to control its power, and if Shadow-Lily is here when it happens..."
"The collision between their energies could unmake reality itself," he ended, his face full of horror.
Shadow-Lily’sugh echoed through the field. "Exactly. Either I get the baby, or we all stop to exist. Those are your only choices."
Lily doubled over with another contraction, and this time cracks showed in the floating tform beneath us. The baby’s power was getting stronger, but so was the danger.
"There has to be another way," I muttered, putting my hands to Lily’s belly again. The baby’s heartbeat had returned, but now it sounded like a drum of war, beating faster and faster.
Then I felt something that made my blood turn to ice.
The baby had stopped trying to stay inside.
It wasing now, ready or not.
And as the first traces of golden light began to leak from between Lily’s legs, Shadow-Lily’s attack broke freepletely, racing toward us with the rage of a dying star.
"Everyone hold on," I shouted as reality started to tear apart around the emerging child. "This birth is about to rewrite everything we know about existence itself."
