Chapter 687: Barbara Sutton’s Words
CHAPTER 687: CHAPTER 687: BARBARA SUTTON’S WORDS
An engaged fiancée? And yet he says he likes Hailey?
Barbara Sutton noticed a flicker of shock in the woman’s eyes. She hesitated a bit and said, "Auntie, actually Hailey has been throwing herself at him, but Special Assistant Morgan is quite good at maintaining boundaries. Hailey is staying at his home, and despite being advised to leave several times, she wouldn’t go. Now the whole company knows about this, and many people are talking about Hailey behind her back..."
Upon hearing this, Paige felt a heavy weight settle in her heart.
Barbara observed her expression and deliberately paused her speech.
With a detached gaze, Paige asked, "What are they saying?" Although she didn’t like the young woman in front of her, anything concerning her daughter was worth listening to.
Barbara’s micro-expressions were rich and her tone sarcastic, "They’re saying that the mayor’s daughter really can do whatever she pleases, not even caring if the other person is unattached, just taking what she likes."
"I know what kind of person my daughter is," the middle-aged woman emphasized, with a smile at the corner of her lips, "Young lady, please don’t slander her because of your unrequited love, because slander can constitute a crime — this is just a friendly reminder."
Barbara’s face changed slightly, "..." She doesn’t believe me?
Paige scrutinized her, "You like Finn Morgan, but unfortunately, Finn only has eyes for my Hailey."
Barbara was at a loss for words and scoffed, "He has a fiancée, why would he be interested in Hailey?" She also found Paige intimidating—how could she read her so well at their first meeting?
"If it’s true, then maybe you should remind yourself of that." Paige retracted her gaze.
Barbara forced herself to remain calm, her voice slightly cold, "If you don’t believe me, you can ask Special Assistant Morgan yourself next time if he has a fiancée!" With that, she turned and started to walk away.
"So you should stay away from him too! Keep the appropriate distance!" Paige called to the retreating figure, "I think you’re the one trying to cling to him! Young lady, you’re still too green to play mind games with me!"
Barbara felt as if her lungs were about to explode with anger! Why isn’t this mother behaving as expected? Why didn’t she lose her temper and run to reproach her daughter?
But the mayor’s wife was certainly a tough character, and there was nothing to gain by offending her. It was enough to deliver the message, and so Barbara quickened her pace.
She couldn’t believe any mother would allow her daughter to behave that way!
The issue of the fiancée was true enough; as long as the Hale family elders interfered, and if she was proactive, Finn Morgan would sooner or later be hers!
Paige returned home in a foul mood, analyzing the situation calmly along the way.
At that moment, the mayor had just come back from the office to fetch some documents, and was heading downstairs when he saw the woman entering the house.
"Darling, what’s wrong? You don’t look well. Did you argue with our daughter?" Considering this, the man felt a slight unease.
"Finn Morgan said Hailey lost her keys, so she’s temporarily staying at his place. One sleeps on the bed, the other on the sofa. They’re not involved, do you believe that?"
"You saw Finn Morgan?" Dennis Hale was surprised, "Weren’t you just meeting Hailey for coffee? Why did you meet with Finn Morgan?"
"It was a coincidence, I didn’t seek him out deliberately," the mayor’s wife explained, "It really was just a coincidence. Stop staring at me, the point is do you believe his explanation? He said there’s nothing between them!"
"Well..." the man pondered the situation objectively, "How should I put it? You can’t rule out the possibility."
"And did you know Finn Morgan has a fiancée? Are you aware of this?" The mayor’s wife cared about this now and believed it too, thinking this was too significant for the young woman to fabricate, as it could easily be verified.
"A fiancée?" Dennis Hale was taken aback, "I hadn’t heard about that; I’m not familiar with him."
