CHAPTER 56: CHAPTER 56: JUDE SINCLAIR’S INTERROGATION

During dinner, silence abounded and the atmosphere was awkwardly cold. Old Mrs. Fairchild glanced at Desmond Fairchild’s absent-minded demeanor and asked, as if casually, "What’s wrong? Did you have a fight with your granddaughter-in-law?"

"Sort of."

Desmond nodded. Having been close to his grandmother since childhood, he knew nothing could be hidden from her, so he decided to directly share the sequence of events.

Upon hearing, Old Mrs. Fairchild knocked his head lightly with chopsticks, expressing her disappointment, "You, child, have always had too strong a sense of possession. But some things, if she doesn’t want you to know, you need to respect her privacy."

"I was worried about her."

"You still need to respect her!" Old Mrs. Fairchild instructed kindly, "Grandma knows you love Seraphina, but between husband and wife, trust and respect are most important. Only by understanding this, can your relationship go far."

"I don’t need to tell you the rest, do I? Apologize if you need to, and quickly go back to coax her."

Desmond nodded again, picked up the chopsticks, yet in his heart, he pondered over how to resolve this matter.

"I won’t go back tonight. Let’s both calm down a bit, and I’ll visit again tomorrow." Desmond said flatly.

Old Mrs. Fairchild nodded with a smile, thinking that her grandson was good in every way except emotionally, where he hadn’t fully wisened up yet! Besides, having been stubborn since childhood—no one can change his mind—but now, willing to soften up, is indeed rare.

"Bring my granddaughter-in-law and great-grandson next time, or don’t return at all!"

After finishing her meal, Old Mrs. Fairchild supported herself with a cane and headed upstairs, leaving that remark without turning back.

Upon reaching upstairs, Old Mrs. Fairchild took out her reading glasses, pulled out her phone, and started texting: "Jude, this is Great-grandma. Your dad is staying at the old house today. Did you know they fought?"

"Great-grandma, you don’t want mom and me anymore? Dad actually went on a blind date and Mommy found out." Jude’s response quickly came back.

Old Mrs. Fairchild thought for a bit and then understood, feeling quite regretful.

If she had known her great-grandson, Jude, would be this adorable and clever, she would not have helped Desmond arrange the blind date.

Now things are a mess.

Through the screen, it seemed as if she could imagine Jude pouting unhappily, which tugged at Old Mrs. Fairchild’s heart. Suddenly, an idea struck her: "Let me tell you, later you..."

The night deepened, as Seraphina Sinclair looked at the sumptuous spread on the table, her ears alert to the sounds at the door, yet she hadn’t seen the person she hoped to see.

"Mom, are you unhappy?"

Jude, though young, was acutely aware of Seraphina’s every move. While her bowl was filled with her favorite dishes, Seraphina hadn’t touched a morsel.

"No, you quickly finish your meal and go upstairs to bed."

Seraphina was brought back to reality by Jude’s voice, replying softly.

Memories flooded back like a tide, the happy times from last night seeming to still be vividly before her eyes. The grand house suddenly felt empty.

How long has it been, and she already feels unaccustomed to the house lacking Desmond’s presence?

Not coming home, couldn’t he at least call?

Seraphina’s face turned pale. Her words during the day might have been too harsh, yet the events from five years ago are her boundary, and she won’t allow anyone to touch it, not even Desmond.

"Mom, it’s normal for couples to argue. It’ll pass. Don’t be upset."

Jude hastily finished eating, wanting to accompany Seraphina, yet was sent away by her citing his need to go to school.

He gave Seraphina a big hug and returned to his room, leaving Seraphina sitting alone at the table, where she forcefully threw her chopsticks onto the table, heading straight to her room.

...

Meanwhile, Jude didn’t sleep after returning to his room. He glanced at the clock hanging on the wall, guessing that Seraphina might have already fallen asleep in this world, and quietly sneaked downstairs to dial the familiar number.

"Why did you make Mommy upset?"

As soon as the call was answered, Jude’s questioning words reached Desmond’s ears.

Desmond was standing by the window, holding a glass of red wine, having drunk most of it.

After a barely audible sigh, he said, "There were some things to deal with tonight; I’ll be back tomorrow."

Though Jude is wise and quick-witted, Desmond still doesn’t wish for the child to be more involved in adult matters.

"Thud—"

"Who!"
