Urban Ace Bodyguard
Chapter 650 - 700: The Greatness and Insignificance of Ordinary People
Crash, the muzzle of the robber's gun was pointed squarely at the little girl.
An immediate tension seized the hearts of everyone present.
"Brother robber, it's just a little girl, she's no threat," Lin Hai quickly spoke up, his tone as calm as possible.
The robber, upon seeing it was a young girl, lowered his gun.
Criminals often unconsciously tense up during the commission of a crime, a tension that is involuntary, often not even fully perceived by the perpetrator themselves.
Lin Hai had a very thorough understanding of this psychology.
Because from the moment a person is born and begins to think, no matter how beastly they are, they are bound by something called a conscience. Whenever they do something wrong, they become incredibly uneasy. It's just that stronger individuals can suppress this feeling of unease, but that doesn't mean they can erase their conscience.
The ball rolled to Lin Hai's feet.
"Uncle, could you please return the ball to me?"
"The ball was left to me by my mom before she died, I know I was wrong to lose the ball."
The innocence of the little girl was pure, her eyes clear of any impurities, filled only with timidness towards a stranger, appearing to be only about four or five years old.
She probably didn't understand that the cold, dark object in the hands of the burly, fierce-looking man with a stocking over his head and densely-haired arms was a weapon capable of easily claiming a person's life.
Judging by the patched clothing on the little girl, her family's financial situation was likely not good.
Furthermore, from the words the little girl had just spoken, it was apparent that her mother had passed away.
She was a lovely little girl with a not-so-fortunate life, perhaps still oblivious to the pain that the death of a mother signifies.
Lin Hai showed a kind and friendly smile, trying his best not to frighten the little girl, and gently nodded, speaking with a magnetic voice, "Don't worry, uncle will give the ball back to you immediately."
Saying so, Lin Hai slowly squatted down, picked up the cheap-looking leather ball that seemed to have been patched up as if after being damaged, probably not costing more than ten yuan to buy.
The little girl took the ball, and instantly, a bright light sparkled in her dark, lovely eyes as she hugged the ball affectionately, treating it like a treasured possession: "Thank you, uncle, thank you so much."
Hearing that pure voice tinged with strong joy and gratitude, Lin Hai too revealed a knowing smile.
This was just an innocent child.
"Are you here alone?"
"No, I'm with my dad. We were about to visit grandma in Huadu; grandma is sick, and my dad is really worried, and so am I," the little girl said.
Lin Hai nodded and told the little girl, "Go back, your dad must be really worried."
"Okay, I understand, uncle, thank you," the little girl gratefully showed Lin Hai a childish smile once again.
The people present finally let out a sigh of relief, inwardly feeling anxious for the little girl.
Just as the little girl was about to turn around and leave, there was a creak, and the door of the opposite carriage was opened. A man appeared in everyone's – and the robber's – line of sight, dressed plainly, his face marked with a weariness borne from life that was difficult to hide or erase.
The man, upon seeing his daughter, showed a relieved expression.
However, when he saw a burly man standing next to his daughter, with a stocking over his head and holding a gun, his complexion turned ashen to the extreme, his eyes shifting from weariness to deep fear and panic.
Thump, the man instantly dropped to his knees without hesitation, as if in his destiny of a life filled with nothing but submission, in the face of terror, all he could do was abandon his dignity and kneel to resolve the situation.
"I beg you, please don't hurt my daughter, I'm begging you," the man desperately knocked his head on the ground.
That was his daughter, the only flesh and blood he had in this world, and he didn't know what to do. He was just an honest migrant worker, life had already made him pitiable enough, tirelessly earning money day and night, just wanting to give his daughter a better life, hoping she wouldn't have to endure poverty like he had.
Yet, before his eyes stood a terrifying robber, a terrifying gun, and together they amounted to an internal terror of fear.
While desperately kowtowing, the man knelt and urgently tried to get closer to his daughter, as if only by holding her in his arms would he feel she was safe and at peace.
"Daddy, what's wrong?" the little girl, in her pure innocence, asked as she staggered toward her father, intuition telling her that Daddy would stop acting this way once she reached his side.
However, the robber furrowed his brows and coldly scolded, "Don't come any closer."
The man seemed panicked, with eyes only for his daughter, a father's instinct driving him to hold her without delay, so even if the robber shot, he could shield his daughter with his body with peace of mind.
"Please, spare my daughter."
"Come here to Daddy, come to Daddy."
While crazily kowtowing, the man inched towards his daughter on his knees.
"I'm warning you, don't get any closer, or I'll kill you," the robber bellowed fiercely.
Almost there, about three meters away, and he could rescue his daughter.
"Please, I beg you, don't shoot. Spare my child."
One meter away, the man was about to embrace his daughter.
"Fuck, looking for death!"
It seemed as though the robber felt the man had entered his comfort zone, and perhaps because of a guilty conscience, sweat beaded on his forehead; in a tense moment, he fired without any warning.
Bang—
The man's shoulder was instantly saturated with blood.
"Die, just die for me, dare to approach me, seeking death, damn it!"
After the first shot, the robber seemed to lapse into hysteria, pulling the trigger over and over in a frenzy.
Bang bang bang—
"Daughter..."
The man was instantly hit by five bullets, his hand nearly touching his daughter, but it dropped helplessly.
"Daddy..."
The little girl seemed to sense something terrifying, throwing herself in front of her father, her tender small hands tightly clutching his clothes, using her negligible strength to try and lift her father.
"Stop shooting, it's over now, big brother robber." Lin Hai quickly continued to speak, ready to make his move at any moment.
The little girl cried her heart out; though she didn't understand what happened, Daddy seemed to be falling asleep, not the normal kind of sleep. She remembered from her young mind that Mommy had once fallen asleep like this, and then never woke up to look at her again, never...
She wept helplessly, shaking her father's clothes, her hands smeared with blood, an inexplicable fear making her think of the uncle who returned her ball to her, his eyes compelling her to seek help.
The little girl turned her head, looking towards Lin Hai.
"Don't stare at me, fuck!" The robber, seemingly neurotic, or maybe because it was his first time shooting someone, instantly fired his gun again as his gaze met the little girl's.
A tragic spray of blood burst from the little girl's breast.
"Uncle, save Ke'er's daddy..."
Lin Hai's raised hand froze mid-air; he had misjudged the situation, failing to sense the murderous intent, the robber was shooting completely neurotically.
He was stunned, two vibrant lives slipping away, and the girl's name, it was also Ke'er!
Click, his fist clenched tightly; some people, he must kill them himself!!
