CHAPTER 56: CHAPTER 56: WHAT REWARD SHOULD I GIVE MY HUSBAND?

On the way back, Vincent Vance held May Morgan in his arms, gently stroking her head while advising her, "My grandfather definitely won’t let the matter of the Jade Pendant go lightly, so for the time being, don’t leave the house."

As long as May promised not to leave, Vincent had the ability to protect her safety. But the outside world was fraught with danger, and it was impossible to guard against every threat. If May were to leave Zenith Villa, he feared he wouldn’t have the ability to protect her.

This was also why he didn’t want May to go to the hospital to take care of Monica Lambert’s parents.

May obediently nodded and replied, "I understand, I won’t go out."

Vincent smiled in relief, and his touch on her hair became even gentler, "Are you tired? If you’re tired, take a nap, I’ll handle everything."

May was truly exhausted, having been stressed since four o’clock in the morning. Now that she had finally relaxed, her eyelids drooped, and she fell asleep in Vincent’s embrace.

In her sleep, she saw a lot of blood around her, gradually increasing, thickening, until finally, like a flood, it suddenly drowned her.

May woke with a start, startled, and sat up in bed. Next to her, Vincent quickly came over to check on her.

"May, what happened? Did you have a nightmare?"

Her pajamas were soaked with cold sweat, showing how terrifying the nightmare was. It took her a long time to gather her wits before she threw herself into Vincent’s arms, trembling, "I had that terrible nightmare again."

Pain flickered in Vincent’s eyes as he gently patted May’s trembling back and softly comforted her, "You were frightened. It’s okay; I’m here with you, I’ll always protect you."

"No, you don’t understand. Before I was kidnapped, I already started having that nightmare. I dreamed of lots of blood, so much that it drowned me, making it hard to breathe. I wanted to shout for you, but I couldn’t, I couldn’t see anything, just lots of blood and a pair of terrifying eyes..."

The clarity of the nightmare still gave her goosebumps, and having dreamt it three times in one day, she felt it wasn’t a mere coincidence, but an ominous sign.

Vincent gently pulled May into his arms, kissing her hair while patiently reassuring her, "Don’t think about it, it’s just my grandfather scaring you. It’ll be fine in a few days, be good."

May clutched Vincent’s back, feeling like something was stuck in her throat. She had a strange thought in her mind but couldn’t express it; whenever she thought about it, her voice seemed sealed, unable to speak.

It took a while for May to gradually relax, and seeing that she seemed better, Vincent bent down to lay her back on the bed. To prevent her from scaring herself awake from another nightmare, he lay down beside her.

"Is it because the Jade Pendant isn’t with you, protecting you, so you’re having nightmares?" Vincent suddenly thought of the pendant, quickly fetching it to put around May’s neck.

May suddenly grabbed his wrist, pushing the pendant back into his hand, "You keep the pendant; it needs to be kept away from me."

Vincent frowned, looking at her puzzled, "Why?"

May rested her head on Vincent’s chest, holding him gently as she said, "My father said there’s a Dragon Insect in the pendant’s spiritual power. Only this could give our child healing powers. If I kept it, and were taken by grandfather again, it would be a disaster."

Upon hearing this, Vincent examined the pendant under the light but saw no sign of any insect. Dragon Insect? Where’s the insect? It looked just like an ordinary pendant.

"Is your father tricking grandfather? Why can’t I see anything?" Vincent observed the pendant closely, yet saw nothing extraordinary.

May wasn’t quite sure either; what she told Arthur Vance was mostly improvised to buy time, though she had heard her grandmother mention Dragon Insect once.

She remembered losing the pendant at eight, and overhearing her mother and grandmother mention Dragon Insect, their expressions grim, as if speaking of a taboo. It left such an impression on May.

Upon retrieving the pendant, her mother sternly warned her that losing it again meant death. If she wished to live, she must keep it safe and secret.

"I did hear my grandmother mention Dragon Insect once, although I’m not sure of the details."

May sighed involuntarily, hiding herself into Vincent’s embrace, "Grandfather won’t let this go easily. There needs to be a resolution, or bigger troubles will just keep coming."

"If there must be a resolution, then the root must be severed."

Vincent gently held May’s hand, speaking deeply.

Confused by his words, May looked up and asked, "How do you sever the root?"

"It’s nothing, just sleep!" Vincent, not wanting her to worry too much, smiled and kissed her forehead, then enveloped her in his arms, turning off the bedside lamp.

The room darkened immediately. May turned to look at Vincent holding her and, listening to his steady breaths, had an impulsive urge as she turned to embrace him face-to-face, "Tonight was supposed to be our wedding night."

Vincent chuckled, tapping her gently on the head, teasing, "What? Want to make it up to your husband?"

Blushing, May retorted with a playful "Pfft," turning her back to him, "Just thinking about it, who wants to make it up to you?"

Though she said that, Vincent was already aroused, and if not for everything that happened and his concern for her fatigue, he would have long wanted to share intimacy with her.

Still, a little affection wouldn’t hurt.

"Then let your husband make it up to you." Vincent swiftly pinned her beneath him, passionately kissing her.

May struggled a bit before yielding, softly mewling, "Annoying, I’m really tired."

"It’s alright, your husband is full of energy, you just sleep."
